This really is a mystery.I did have a friend in Wigan who searched the records there and had no luck. My friend contacted someone who was going to check all the Records, she paid to have this done. Sadly, my friend passed away before hearing any results from the search and I have not found anything more.

Hi

I have no documents which confirm what Mary's actual surname was. I have had some contact via Genes reunited with other Blinkhorn descendants who also have 'Smethurst'. I note that on 'Family Search' (latter day saints) that has a reference to Mary Southworth. I have looked at the Lancs Parish On Line and oould not find any info on that to help but those years are not yet covered. I have only fairly recently started to look at my family history so my current info is limited.

I have not been able to find any info on Mary Smeathurst.The only marriage I can find is James Blinkhorn and Mary Southworth. do you know if this is a misspelled name?
I have copies of Marriage records for James and Agnes, Robert and Alice,Henry and Elizabeth, Arthur and Alice(my Husbands Parents). I would appreciate any info you can share,( will share too)

Hi, I am Karrie Smethurst by birth, we grew up in South London but believe my grandfather's people came from the North. I just can't get anywhere though! Grandfather was Robert George born sometime during the 30's I think.

According to his death certificate, Richard Smethurst was born on 5 Dec 1864 in Philadelphia PA to Richard and Rebecca (Curry) Smethurst. Both parents were born in England.

John Smethurst was born ca 1784 in Farnworth, Lancashire (best guess from census records). He married Ann Birch of Odaret Shropshire (daughter of Sarah) prior to 1829. By 1829 the family was living in Pendlebury, Lancashire. By 1837, they had moved to Salford, Lancashire. By 1851, they were in Bowden, Cheshire. For the 1861 census, they were back in Lancashire at Cheetham. I haven't found either John or Ann in the 1871 census. Daughter Eleanor Smethurst married Thomas Boardman in 1860 at Dunham Massey, Cheshire.

I've been searching for quite some time now, and have finally found alot of info I didn't have before thanks to everyone here at ancestry.com. Unfortunately, I only have names and approximate birth years, and am still fitting all the peices together. I'll post what I've found, and hope someone out there can fill in some blanks for me.

My grandfather was Gaylord Lee Smethurst, born abt. 1942

His father was Gaylord Benidict Smethurst, born abt. 1917
G. B. Smethurst was the son of Elmer Smethurst b. abt.1894 and Violet M Picha.

Elmer and Violet had 3 other children, Agnes Mae b. 1922; William James b. 1915; and Eldon b. 1919.

Elmer was born to Charles L smethurst and Elizebeth Fritz.

Elmer and Elizebeth had 7 other children, Geneva b. 1886; James Harlis b.1889; Albert b. 1891; Donald b. 1896; Lavern C. b. 1898; Clarabel E. b. 1903; and Wilmah b. 1906

Charles L. was born to James charles Smethurst and Julia Augusta Langdon in 1864.

Cincinnati, Jan. 5 [1933]. - Richard Smethurst, retired certified public accountant and head of the firm of Richard Smethurst & Co., died today. Mr. Smethurst was born in Philadelphia sixty-eight years ago and came here in 1905. In 1909 he organized the company of which he was the head at the time of his death. He was a member of Elks Lodge 5, was formerly a trustee of the Cuvier Press Club and a former member of the Cincinnati Club and the Hyde Park Country Club. Besides his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Smethurst, he is survived by two sons, Robert Burnett of of New York City and Richard Jr., and a sister, Mrs. Ella S. Woods of Philadelphia.

WILLARD SMETHURST
Willard J. Smethurst, 88, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Eastman, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the Onalaska Care Center, Onalaska.
He was born December 16, 1917, in Eastman, son of Harley and Martha (Becwar) Smethurst. He married Janet Bean on June 27, 1951.
He worked as a machinist for JIK's Tractor Works and later for Styberg Engineering both in Racine. After moving back to the Prairie du Chien area he worked at the Piggly Wiggly and Wyalusing Academy. Although many will remember Bill as owning and operating the Bait Shanty in Prairie du Chien which in later years was known as Willy and Nelly's Bait Shop, for 23 years. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Janet Smethurst of Prairie du Chien, a daughter Julie Daniels of La Crosse, and a granddaughter Jackie Daniels of Onalaska. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Mary Smethurst.
Funeral services were Monday, at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel, Prairie du Chien, Rev. Thomas Huff officiating, with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Eastman .

Morning Caroline.

My friend is Stan Smethurst and he tells me that his Uncle was Herbert Smethurst. He knew that Herbert emigrated to Canada in the 1920's and of course he would like to contact any of that family - plus anyone else for that matter.

Hoping that I would get some response from you Smethurst chasers, I am ringing him tonight to update him. Sadly, although he has a computer, he is not connected to the Internet and that is why I am his "mouth piece" so to speak.

He has been researching his family history for over 30 years and is very methodical and much of it was done the hard way, before computerisation. Of course, there are so many threads to follow, it takes time to put everything in place.

If you would care to provide a short family tree for him I will gladly pass it on. I will get his authorisation to release his info. We are always quite careful doing so as on several occasions we have seen data taken and used in other folks' trees which contain spurious connections. Not everyone checks their facts as thoroughly as Stan does.

If he says it is so, then it usually is........ else he marks up that the data is dodgy!

I've just read the piece about David Smethurst being a respected resident of Montana. I just thought that perhaps I should make contact - he was my great great uncle. David also had a brother called Nathan who went with him to the US but returned home. Whilst sorting through my mother's effects after her death we found a watch made by the Elgin Watch Company in the 1880s which we presume belonged to Nathan. I was born in Westhoughton (David's home town) and his mother's grave is in the Parish Church graveyard. I found your piece very interesting and I will show it to my sister who is also interested in the family history.

I have a pedigree of SMETHURST, of Chorley and Rookwood dating from the birth in 1778 of ARTHUR SMETHURST of Darcy Lever in the parish of Bolton, Lancashire through four generations to 1872. I am hoping to find how my grandfather, RICHARD SMETHURST who I believe died in the late 1950s, fits into this pedigree which was given to me by my mother before she died. My Maternal Grandfather was Robert Smethurst, fourth of seven boys born to Walter Smethurst and Louise (nee Natrasse) Hulme Street, The Crescent, Salford, Lancashire. He would have been born in the 1890's. Married Beatrice Kynaston and moved to Cheadle Heath, Stockport where he remained until he died. Smethurst is definitely a Lancashire name - many around the Salford, Manchester, Bury areas. He was a French Polisher (as was his Father) and worked at Kendal Milne, a high class store in Deansgate, Manchester. His Father (Walter) was the head of the furniture dept. and chief polisher. Later in life he moved to another high class furniture shop also on Deansgate called Heighways Ltd. where he remained until retirement.

Any information would be WONDERFUL!

I have no information on these two except the following: They had a least one son - Joseph William Cooper born approx 1875-1880(?). Joseph maried a Laura Nehlig and he died in 1915 in Cape May, NJ. I am looking for people researching this name I have seen a few people on here that share the same tree but do they still have the same e mail addy .
So I thought I would start from scratch .
My great grandad John Smethurst Bolton/Leigh areas born 1867 {dont get put off with the age he lied to get into the army} was married to Jane Lowe who married Alf Whalley at great Harwood John had a fair few bros/sisters and his parents were John Smethurst 1832 and Elizabeth Smethurst nee Hampson if any of this rings a bell give me a shout I would love to swop details as my lot didnt care much for the big brother state and avoided being documented as much as they could LOL...Linda

Thank you so much for your reply, I decided i wanted to do a family tree. And asked my mother for imformation which i already knew we had relatives in canada and just did a search last night and come up with your grandfathers name and his mother and fathers to and there siblings to.My grandma passed away sadly in the 80's, she had 6 siblings one being my mother marian but sadly we also lost my mothers older brother brian which leaves doreen, dorothy, audrey and kathleen. My Grandfather also lived in Blackburn.
He was called Gordon Smethurst, Brothers Neville, Ronald and a sister Violet.
Gordon married an Ellen Fleming in 1926.
