I hope this answer is read, after many years ... Bozena (Bessie) Hoskovec was sister of my grandmother. She came with her other siblings to America and married John Anton Smid. The family Hoskovec came from Bohemia(formerly Austria about 1900).
My grandmother Zofie (Sophia) Hoskovec was born May 02/1902 (father Josef Hoskovec - he was professionally blacksmith in Bohemia and had 9 or 10 children). My 2 grand aunts were also members of my family in the Czech Republic - both born Hoskovec. My grandmother died in Czech Republic, was 84 years old. I would be glad to get more information,
many thanks in advance...

Josef Smid & Frantiska Sporcel Stejskal Smid

Hi, Looking for info on my great grandparents Joseph and Frances Smid (Sporcel/Sporcel/Stajskal). They married in Chicago, Il in 1895. Both were widowers with children. Talk about blended families...her, mines and ours totaled over 11 children. My grandmother Ella Smid was the baby of the family.

In the 1910 Federal Census (under Smith not Smid) they list their nationality as German Bohemians. He is listed as immigrating in 1884. Joseph was born circa 1862 and was a carpenter while Frances ran a storefront grocery store on Grand Ave. in Chicago. My mother (Alice Penkava Roundy) lived and played there often as child.

I am interested in finding more info on his or her immigration and where he/she may have immigrated from in Bohemia (circa 1884). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can be contacted at shardog1@att.net
Thanks,
Sharon Roundy

Re: Smid family

I believe the name Smid is a form of the Bavarian forest
name Schmid, which is in normal German Schmidt.
There were many Smids who left Bohemia, some went to Oshkosh,Wis. some went to Nebraska, some went to Minneapolis. If you go type in Oshkosh southside highholders into a google search, it will take you to the Highholder web page. There you will find maps, and lists of
names of people who came to America, from the border regions of Bavaria/Bohemia.
cniggl@yahoo.com

John Anton Smid from Bohemia / Nebraska

Hello! I am trying to find further information about my great-grandfather, John Anton Smid. Here's what I know so far: He was born in Bohemia, and immigrated to US / Nebraska (?) around 1906. He was married and had two children John or Joseph, and Vlasta, who may have eventually came to US also. He married Bozena "Bessie" Hoskovec 7-4-1910 in Nebraska, and had three children: Emilie (my grandmother), Georgina, and Otto. He died in August of 1922. If you have any information on him, or his family, I would appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

I am still looking for information on my great grandfather, John Anton Smid. What I know is that he was born in 1866 in Bohemia - married to 1st wife about 1893 and had two children - names possibly Joseph and Vlasta. He married my great grandmother, Bessie (Bozena) Hoskovec in Nebraska in 1910 and had 3 children: Emilie (my grandmother), Georgina, and Otto. He was a painter, and died in Omaha in 1922. I have nothing on his other two children, or his parents, etc. My mother thinks my grandmother had told her that his other two children had moved to Florida, and possibly eventually returned to Czech. Thank you!

I know this is a long shot, but there is a Haskovec? (Hoskovec) listed in 1900 Appling County, Georgia Census.Husband- Vasclov,36, born Austria,Wife-Agnes,20,born Austria,Son,Premysal, 5m, born Ga. (This is a rural farming community.) My Grandaddy, Henry Joseph Smith, born-2-13-1870,died-5-26-1912, came from Austria(Bohemia), and settled in this area of Georgia in 1885. Only other family shown as being from Austria,(Bohemia) are a Kodate Family. I have'nt been able to find Grandaddy's given Bohemian Surname.(know it's not Smith) Could be Smid or Kovar. We do know he came from the Kutna Hora area of Bohemia. It just seems like there has to be a connection with these families, since this is such a rural area of Georgia. And Families usually settled together.

Hi Betty, I haven't visited this site for ages. I checked it weekly last summer, but nothing ever appeared. While checking another name on the internet, I was directed to the message board and desided to the check the Smiddie site. I was very suprised to find replies. Most of all I was suprised to see the names of Sampson and Katherine. They were my Grandparents! Sampson was born in 1865 and died in Carbondale, Ill in 1914, a Coal Mine accident. I remember Grandma form her visits to Indianapolis, IN, where we lived in the early 1950's. She lived with Aunt Bertha in Cumberland, KY until her death in the mid 1950's. They are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Eastland, TN. William McKinley Smiddie (1897-1954) was my Dad and Mayme I (Brown) Smiddie (1905-1989) was my Mother. I know very little about the Smiddie side of the family - even some of my uncles (Monroe, Elmer, Dalton I only know family talk at re-unions; Sam, Bertha and Maggie I knew from visits).

I would love to know any information you might have on the Smiddie/Smiddy family. You sound like you know the family well. I only have information on the immediate family. My e-mail is smiddie@smithville.net. I live in Southweastern Indiana near Bloomfield.

While searching the 1850 Orange Co., IN census, I found the following information on Hannah Smidy:
Orange Co., Southeast Twp.
185 185 Hollowell, Malachi, 36, farmer, IN
Elizabeth, 33, KY

Thanks for the information, Betty. I found my parents, William and Mayme, on the 1920 census, White Co., Eastland, TN, just before they were married. Grandpa Sampson had died in a coal mining accident in 1914 so Katherine was head of household. Do you have any ideal where they were on the 1880 census? That would be just before Sampson and katherine were married.
Thanks, Joe

Found a great resource at http://geneaknowhow.net/digi/resources.html
The names to search for are Smidt, de Smidt, Smit, Smits and Smitz. Hope this helps you out... I've been able to research my Smid Family back to Herman de Smidt born in 1734 in Huissen Holland.

William Smid
http://www.smid.org
Further clarification...Margaret Toms who was the school teacher and introduced idea of "correct" smiddy spelling being with "ie" was the wife of Roe Smiddy (Monroe), or daughter-in-law to Samson and Katherine (Perkins/Brooks) Smiddie. I hope this helps. Also, in previous posting I miss-spelled Katherine's given name.

Re: Smiddie surname

Hi, all. This is my first time to this site. I noticed this thread...I may have some additional insight on the Smiddie v. Smiddy spelling question. Obtained from oral histories and family stories contributed to by many family elders gathered on my Great Aunt Bertha's front porch, in Cumberland, KY, on a summer evening circa 1969, the explanation that a Margaret Toms (relationship unknown), a school teacher of some influence over the family led some to believe that the "correct" spelling (no other explanation given) should be Smiddie. And, a whole group of the family then adopted the new spelling, leaving some to maintain the original spelling of Smiddy. Based on the location of this information in my records, I think I can provide additional verification for the timing of this around the Samson (some spellings show Sampson) - Katherine Perkins (a.k.a. Lucille Katheirne Brooks) union. I hope this helps.

After posting my previous reply, I see a reply from my brother... hard to believe that we are not related since Smid is not all that common a name in the Netherlands, it seems. My sister has done quite a bit of work - must be a connection there somewhere! I will try to find out greatgrandparents, etc.
My father was Pouwell (Paul) Smid from Ruinen who emigrated to Canada (Arthur, Ontario) in 1953 with his wife and two small children. He left his parents, two sisters and a brother in Drente. My grandparents died in the 60's and my father was estranged from his brother in the 60's. We have no contact with my uncle's family, but I believe they are still in the Netherlands. My uncle passed away a few years ago, as did one sister; my Tante Jantje (Slomp) is still alive in the Netherlands, but I am not sure where she is living.
