I receently was able to finally discover the origin of Smiley. It is a Scotish name meaning "small" that was derived from the English name Smallie or Smylie, or Smilie. They may have originated in the highlands of Scotland. Around 1650 Thomas Smiley, a Presbyterian minister went to Londonderry Ireland (northern Ireland). There his son Thomas was killed in the Londonderry Siege when William of Orange and James the V went to battle. He was honored for bravery and courage by giving the Smiley family its crest. His sons Thomas, James and Francis came to America. Thomas' line came to Somerset County Penn. His son John had a son Robert who married Rhoda Boyd ( once held captive by the Iroquois Indians for 7 years). Robert fought in the Whiskey Rebellion and Revolutionary War. This family line later went to Tuscarawas County Ohio and then on to Daviess County Indiana.
