Seeking Walter E. Smock (Walter E. Bomar), born abt. 1917 in Montana, and Hazel Smock (Hazel Bomar), born abt. 1913 possibly in Montana, their ancestors or descendants.

In 1920, Walter, Hazel, and their two sisters, Frances and Neva Marie BOMAR, were in the Montana State Orphan's Home in Twin Bridges, Madison County, Montana. Walter, and possibly Hazel, were later adopted by a SMOCK family.

I found a WWII Registration Card for Walter E. Smock, born 1917 in MT, who enlisted in the US Army in 1942, while living in Pennsylvania.

I have lost track of Hazel.

Their sister, Neva Marie Bomar, was born 4 Sep 1910 probably in MT, married Andrew Bernaki in 1957, lived in Connecticut during the 1960's, probably divorced abt. 1968 in Connecticut, died Aug 1991 in Alliance, Stark Co, Ohio. She was a nurse.

Their sister, Frances Bomar, was born 1915, possibly in Montana or Nebraska.

The children's birth parents were James Walter Samuel "Jim" Bomar and Neva E. (Rucker) Bomar. Neva may have died sometime after Walter was born.

My grandmother is a cousin of these 4 children, and she would like to reconnect with them, or their families.

I have several photos of this family, and info I'm willing to share.

This photo is of Neva (Rucker) Bomar holding Hazel (1 month), and Jim Bomar holding Neva Marie (2yrs).

Any leads GREATLY appreciated.

I wish you luck in gathering the information. I've done this with a fine group of people on another surname and found it quite rewarding.

I'm willing to share what I have about Catherine Smock and her descendants, but have no information on her ascendants, so may not be of much help.

Email me at Cricket1300@aol if you would like additional information.

I have CATHERINE SMOCK, born 07 Sep 1795 in KY, and died 19 Jan 1877. She married MATHEW ARBUCKLE, son of JAMES ARBUCKLE and MARY POWELL. He was born 01 Jan 1791, and died 06 Nov 1846 in Jennings Co. IN.

There exist a the Bible of Alexander Arbuckle. As found in the Harrodsburg, Kentucky Historical Society. The Bible is owned by Elizabeth Deputy of Crothersville, Jackson Co., Indiana. I have not seen it.

There are several Smock Family Bibles. I have in my notes written that there is a Family Bible of Abraham Smock that has been donated to a museum in Indiana. There should also be one from the Early Dutch Settlers of NY, NJ, PA. From what I read, (can't remember where I saw it) it was in the hands of a female descendant and her husband. I am not too sure though. Any info from these bibles would be wonderful!

Who knows, if I can get enough of everyone's research together, I might be able to write a more complete collection of information about the family and get it published so that all can buy it. Would love to find something like that or someone else who is doing the same.

Jen, Is this the the family Bible referred to by H.A. Scomp to Judge William C. Smock of Indianapolis in 1903? If so, as far as I know it may not have survived until today. Maybe someone else has more information on this Bible. It would be of great value to those researching the family today. I hope if anyone knows anything they will post it here. Gene

Jen,
I am male and my Gene name came from (as written in my baby book) the cowboy singer Gene Autry. Among my father's other accomplishments, he was a good singer and played the harmonica. Most of the ladies I know and have known by my name spelled theirs "Jean". My youngest daughter's middle name (given to her by her mother) is Margene. I don't look for that name to be repeated any time soon. :-)
Gene

Thank you Gene! My line started in NY, then to NJ, although one of my ancestors moved to KY and moved the line out there.

On a personal note, are you a male or female? I ask because my Grandmother's name on my mother's side of the family is named Gene and she spells it that way. She had once stated that it was more of the male way of spelling the name but I am in search of someone who was named Gene who spelled it with a "G" like you do.

Jen

Hello Jennifer, Yes, Two books that I know of were written by Alva Tuttle and John C. Smock. David L. Smock has researched the Smocks for quite a number of years and Robert Brian Stewart put his Smock ancestry on line about 1999. My line came from NY to NJ to PA to KS and my great geandfather's brother went to Nebraska. Have fun and I hope you will be able to sort out fact from fiction as not all sources are accurate.
Best Wishes,
Gene Smock

Thanks for the information.
Yes, this is my family, The age for Mary Biegy is correct. Mary was born March, 1848.
Family history said that Elizabeth Smock married William Biegy and had one daughter Mary. He died when Mary was very young. Elizabeth died about 1865 leaving Mary Biegy an orphan. Per family sources Mary led a very hard early life.
Getting back passed this generation has been one of my brick walls. I find a lot of Smocks in New Jersey but have never been able to make a real connection.
Thanks for the lead.
Joan

Donibel Fern Smock, born 1921, dau of Lowell A./Mildred Smock, lived O’Brien Co. & Black Hawk Co., IA

I have an original postcard photograph of “Donibel Fern Smock – age 7-1/2 mo.”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members.

I found the family of Donibel F. Smock in the 1925 IA state census, living in O’Brien Co., and in 1930, living in East Waterloo (Black Hawk Co.) IA. Mother listed in 1925 was Mildred Harness, and father I. C. Smock. In 1930, Donibell F., age 8, lived with parents, Lowell A. Smock, age 31, and Mildred J., age 27. SSDI shows a Donibel F. Farley, born 18 April 1921, with death in 2008, last living in Lyon Co., IA.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Donibel Fern Smock.

I am not sure but maybe I found your Ann J. in the 1860 census. For Dover Twp. Ocean Co., NJ has the following family listed.

Smock, Paul H. age 32
Ann J. age 25
Henry age 4
George age 2
Ella age 1

The Smocks in NJ started out in the early 1700's with the sons of Hendrick Matthyse Smock settling in Monmouth, Middlesex, and Somerset. During the 1760's to 1780's many moved to southern PA and then on to KY. My line moved from NJ to southwest PA. Sorry I cannot help with those lines that remained in NJ. Hopefully some one reading about your query will be able to identify Anna J. and Paul H. Good Luck in your search.

That is a problem for you, for sure in trying to trace your ancestors. Oddly enough my brothers middle name was Wayne and I never asked my parents about it, He lived a short time. If you ever find your Smocks came from Pennsylvania, there is a good chance the middle name Wayne was derived from Wene or Ween. Good Hunting!.....Gene Smock

In checking back I discovered a genealogy report sent to me several years ago by a Crawford Co., PA descendent which has Grove Glen Smock listed as the son of Samuel Harrison Smock & no mothers name listed. At the time of receiving the report I checked on Grove because he was listed as "Grone" Smock. The only note I made at the time was that he moved to Michigan and know nothing about his life there. Going back with Grove's father Samuel Harrison, grandfather William Monroe, g grandfather Peter Wene?/Ween?/Wayne?, gg grandfather Leonard, ggg grandfather Leonard is where our paths meet.

I realize this is 10 years after your post but since Barnet/Barent/Barnes/ Barnett Smock b. 1749 was the eldest son of Leonard B. 1730 and Ann Folkerson/Fulkerson, I would like to point out that Leonard b. 1730 father was not John Smock who was actually his bother born in 1732. Their father from what records have been found was Barent Smock and Maretje Beuis/Buys
True is that Leendert Hendrickse Smock was Leonard b. 1730 grandfather. Barnet/Barnes/Barent etc. was my ggg granddfather and he married Elizabeth Jane Bodine, widow of Peter Wene. Any time I see the listing of Leonard b.1730 as having a father John, Well, it it too much to not try and set the record straight. Thanks.....

Do you know what county in PA your Grove Smock was born in? Also an approximate year of birth would help in trying to identify his parents. The Smock families I have been studying were in Westmoreland, Fayette and Crawford counties in SW PA.
Do you Know who your grandfather's parents were? or where they migrated to Indiana from? In the past i have found Smocks living in Indiana who were from the families that moved there from Kentucky. Although "Jack" (John Wayne) name suggests a possible connection to Pennsylvania. Just curious! Thanks

Thanks for the reply. The Howard Glenn Smock I was after was a descendent of Barnet(Barney) Smock from Westmoreland and Fayette Co., PA. Barnet was born in 1822 and died in 1908. I don't have any Smock ancestors from Germany unless a family folklore is true about the first Smock (Hendrick Matthyse or Matthysen) to this country in 1754 arrived from Holland to New Amsterdam (now New York City) and his ancestors may have migrated to Holland from Germany. That family story to my knowledge has never been proven. If your Smocks were from Germany would you mind telling me when they arrived in this country.
thanks,

Found in the 1850 census for East Allen Twp., Northampton Co., PA census is Geo.(George)Smock, age 60, Laborer, born in PA., Eliz (Elizabeth) Smock, age 23, born in PA, Mary Biegy, age 2, born in PA. If this is your Elizabeth Smock, I suspect her father was a George Smock but have nothing on this Smock family line. Do you know if Elizabeth and William Biechy were divorced before 1850 as she seems to be living with her father at the time of the census.

A devoted mother and loyal friend, Rosalie's enduring wit and reassuring presence will be missed by all those who love her.

She is survived by her brothers, Clifford (Joanne) Smock of Huntsville Ala. and Wayne Greiner (Nancy) Smock of Westerville; daughter, Stephanie Ware of Cary, N.C. and her children, Lauren, Blake and Drew; her daughter, Deborah (Jim) Kappes Millis of the Outer Banks of N.C. and their children, Jonathan(Kelly), Debbie Hupe and Dak Millis; and a son, John (Yvonne) Bradley Kappes of Pickerington, Ohio and their sons, Josh and Christopher.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Smock.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 at Bryan and Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Kiger officiating. Internment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville, Ohio.

Rosalie had often expressed her hope for a cure for Alzheimer's. It is the family's request that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave. seventh floor, New York, NY 10001.

To send a note of condolence or share a memory of Rosalie, visit the on-line register book at www.bryansniderfuneralhome.com.

Originally published January 30, 2008
