George Whitfield Smoot and the rest of the Smoots

Earlier this year I had DNA testing done to find out a little more about my Smoot line. My Great X 3 Grandfather is George Whitfield Smoot born in Henry County VA and settled and died in Wilkes County NC. I had Steve Smoot who heads up the Smoot DNA project to review my results. The findings prove that George Whitfield is a direct descendant of William Smute. But the were not enough markers tested to prove who his father is. So I would encourage more male Smoots to try the DNA testing so that we could have a a more complete picture of the paternal lines.

I am Shelia Smoot. You can find the Smoot family in Sumter,Talledega,and Greene County Alabama. You can pull data from the Sumter County Courthouse in Alabama. I have a hand written census report from 1910. There is a John Smoot,Mary,Richard, Frank, and many others on the list.

You seem to be correct. Math has never been my strong suit! ha ha ha ... After trying it 3 times, I also got 22 FEB 1864. I also have the death certificate, I guess I was putting in the wrong numbers...

Did Virginia have a State census in 1865? I am thinking not, since it was a 'tumultuous' time... What about birth records, or church baptism records? Perhaps we can glean some information from these other records and sort of surmise when and to whom she was born, more accurately.

The only other record I have found was a JHD Smoot father, and wife Fanny. ( http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gsfn=Ida+Ella&... ) I only mention this record since her name on the tombstone is Ella, like the one listed in the census..

I plan on ordering a marriage certificate from Bay City, MI, where she was married to Thomas H O'Connor, 18 NOV 1881. (By the way, do you want pictures of them?) Maybe it will have more information than what I have found so far.

I also have a picture of her Widow's Pension Application from the Civil War, if you would like a copy, which corroborates the birth date, as well as marriage date and place.

Thank you for the attempted clarification, however...

The date of birth was calculated using the age at time of death; 53 years, 4 months, 19 days, as listed on the death certificate, which I have a copy of. Using a genealogy calculator (http://longislandgenealogy.com/birth.html), this would put her date of birth at 27 Feb 1864.

So where's the error? (somewhat rhetorical) In the years, months, days category, or was the typo at the top where the problem lies? If you zoom in on the death certificate, it seems a '7' and '2' are superimposed. Can anyone tell which is on top of the other? (genuine question)

If you have more info, perhaps a census or other records with a more corroborative date, please send it to me. I want my info to be as accurate as possible, since I am trying like h%ll to get her lineage as far back as possible. So far, her name is as far as any of my family has gotten in 25+ years. From her forward is no problem, since I am O'Connor and my Grandmother kept what she had intact. Going back, not so much.

Right now I THINK her parents were John Smoot (1833-?) and Eleatha Jane Howel ( http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5198432/person/-1489220728?ss...), but have nothing concrete. It is the only logical connection I can find. This is your tree, right?

"Ella" is listed on her tombstone, while Ida is listed on her Widow's Pension Applcation forms. ( i have a photo of the papers, her tombstone and her if you want an email with them and her husband's tombstone and face)

Let me know what you think, please. I would be better able to find more info with a specific birth date.

Ida Ella was born on 27 FEB 1864 in Virginia, as reported on various paperwork, including a death certificate. (Ella O'Connor is on her headstone)

She married Thomas O'Connor (b. 18 JAN 1848) on 14 NOV 1881 in Bay City MI, reportedly.

Another daughter was supposed to have been Kate, as corroborated by an obituary from the Alcona County Review, in MI, in 1894, putting this daughter's birth at 1873. This would have been with another woman, I am guessing.

I show the date of death to be 11 Jul 1917. Is that what you show? If so, then when using the date calculator in The Master Genealogist and subtracting 53 years, 4 months, and 19 days I still get 22 Feb 1864. However, when I entered that information on the website you show I got 21 Feb 1864.

As for her parents, I agree with you but don't have any proof other than the 1870 Census.

I am hoping someone can help me find information on my grandmothers family. All the census records and other areas I look into do not show her or any of her siblings names that I an familar with. Her name was Nellie Elizabeth Smoot Tidwell. She was born in Madison County, Al on Oct.3,1908. She passed away Mar.1,1988 in Huntsville. Her father left home when her and her siblings were kids and I never knew his name or her mothers. Her mother was Cherokee, though for many years she nor her sisters would admit to it. She had a brother that was killed in the first World War. Don't know his name. Another brother named Ed that moved to California, and another brother named Wyatt that I don't know anything about. Two sisters, Beulah and Naomi. Both of them married and stayed around Huntsville. I think Naomi's husband was Buck Parsons or Pardon. From what I've been told they probably have younger half brothers and or sisters. My grandmother never wanted to talk much about her family, but she did admit to me a year or so before she passed that her mother was full blooded Cherokee.
If anyone has some information on any of these Smoots or knows where I might be able to find some, please let me know it will be greatly appreciated.

The name Smoot is an Americanized spelling. William Smoot or (Smute) was rumored to be born in England or Scotland in 1596. The family crest or coat of arms we see with the unicorn and scallop shells is found in Rotterdam Holland under the name Smout. So it is believed that the origin is from Holland and means renderer of lard.

Has anybody had any luck with finding George Whitfield Smoot's father. I have heard some possible canidates. But still nothing in records or such. I have even have copies of the family Bible and there no mention of his father.
2nd. Does anyone know were to find a service record for William Smoot's service in the campaign against the Pumunkey and Chickohomony Indians?

Hi, My line of Smoots is also believed to come from this line from William Smute. Starting with my grandfather and going back: (Buel, David, Creed, Gabriel, George Whitfield (now when it gets here to George it is kind of tricky?) Most people have James as his father but based on an email I received from another Smoot there is a possibility of his brother Leonard being Georges father?)Both James and Leonards father was John Smoot, John's father Samuel, Thomas, Thomas, and then the original William Smute. Sorry to get back with you so late. I took a break from my genealogy research for a while and I'm just now getting back into it. According to the info I have the only info I have on Delbert (Son of Creed F. Smoot and Rebecca Jane Toler is:

The info on Renie G. Smoot (daughter of Creed F. Smoot and Rebecca Jane Toler) that I have is:

Rena “Renie” Smoot B: ABT 1871 - married Leroy Bailey April 23, 1931 at 60 years old. No other previous marriages or children were found but she was found in the 1920 census in the home of her parents at the age of 47 years.

I have Quite a bit on the Smoot side of the Family. Robert M. Smoot (my GG Grandfather) was remarried to Hannah after the death of his first wife Mary (my GG Grandmother). He had 4 other children Robert, Alice, Anna and William. (my G Grandfather), His Father's name was John Smoot B 1790 in VA. His Mother's name was Mary Jack. I have tracked them back to Muskigum County Ohio 1840 but have hit a brick wall further back than that. I have more but haven't done amy geneology work for about 2 yrs and need to track what I had down.

My line intersects with Delbert Smoot.

His daughter Eleanor Rose Smoot-White married into the Bailey family via John Haskell Bailey.
(Both buried in Claypool Cemetery, Davin, Logan Co., VA

Also Renie G. Smoot 1871/11 Apr 1938 married Leroy C. Bailey (my line) 24 Oct 1858 /30 jul 1943 married 23 apr 1931 wyoming Co., wv (he married 4 times poss)
