Seeking descendants of the Smothers men who left Guilford Co., NC, for Indiana (mainly Wayne Co.) between 1820 and 1860. William Smothers (b. c1804/06) m. 1) 1823 in Guilford to Mason Melton, 2) 1825 to Mary Ann Newby, 3) 1848 to Lucretia Burns; he was counted in Guilford in 1850 but was in Wayne Co., IN, in 1860-70. I presume he died there but have no idea what happened to his children. John Smothers (b. c1800), presumably William's brother, had already moved out to Wayne circa 1829. He m. 1828 in Guilford to Fanny Kersey Present in the 1830-40-50 Wayne Co., IN, censuses but not in 1860. Had a large family, but the only child I know anything about his son Homer L. (b. c1830) who was living in Porter Co., IN, in 1860. Did some of them go to Canada? Any help greatly appreciated.
