WILTON, Iowa - Dorothy Gretchen Smull, 89, of Wilton, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Unity Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.. The Rev. Michael Biklen will officiate and Betty Lincoln will be organist.
Pallbearers are her beloved grandchildren: Scott Smull, Kevin Smull, Sean Smull, Bethany Gray, Kristien Smull, Jared Shuger and Sara Shuger.
Visitation is 3 - 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial is at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. A luncheon in the Community Room of the funeral home will follow the burial.
Memorials have been established for the Wilton First Responders and the United Methodist Church of Wilton.
Mrs. Smull was born April 18, 1912 in Moscow, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Grace E. Birkhofer.
On July 20, 1932, she was united in holy matrimony to Willard Smull in Rock Island, Ill.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wilton and the Golden Links of the United Methodist Women.
She was an accomplished cook who was famous for her homemade noodles, divinity and cinnamon rolls. She collected recipes, loved to garden and crocheted until she lost her eye sight. She loved to play cards and was very good at it. She loved the Cardinals, Old Western movies and John Wayne. She welcomed anyone into her home and loved to cook for people. She farmed along side her husband and provided a really warm, loving home for her family, especially enjoying her grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Willard Smull of Wilton; her two sons, Willard I. Smull jr. and his wife Sondra of Bisbee, AZ and John W. Smull and his Edna of Burlington; six grandchildren: Scott, Kevin and Sean Smull, Bethany Gray, Kris Smull and Janice L. Ziegenhorn Shuger and her husband Mike of Wilton. Janice was raised by Dorothy and Willard as a daughter. Dorothy is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Jared, Sara, Samantha, Christopher and Madeline; one brother, Nevin Birkhofer and his wife Frances of Muscatine and two sisters, Norma Chambliss land her husband Gerald of Tipton and Lois Coran of Muscatine; and by many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John 'Bud' Birkhofer; a daughter, Dolores Ann Smull Ziegenhorn and a brother-in-law, D.J. Coram.
LITTLETON, Colo. -- W.E. 'Ed' Smull, 78, Littleton, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003.
Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.
Visitation is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Memorial contributions will be used by the family to help inspire the continued fascination with all things aeronautical.
Mr. Smull was born on Oct. 7, 1924, in Wilton Junction, the son of Duard V. and Inez Darting Smull.
He graduated from Wilton High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. After his time in the service, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He worked for Lockheed-Martin, first in New York and then in Denver, where he retired in 1987.
He married and raised his family in Littleton. He was a member of several organizations involving the building and flying of airplanes including the Colorado Soaring Association where he set many records for flying sail planes; the Colorado Civil Air Patrol where he flew L-19's and took part in many search and rescue missions; and the Society of Antique Modelers.
He enjoyed music and played clarinet in several big bands. He was a lifelong member of the Wilton Historical Society.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Morrison of Bartlett, Ill.; two daughters, Laura Tucker of Indian Hills, Colo., and Nancy Smull of Littleton; and three grandchildren.
WILTON, Iowa - Willard I. Smull, Sr., 92, of Wilton, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Lutheran Homes.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Zeleny will officiate. Pallbearers are his beloved grandchildren: Scott Smull, Kevin Smull, Sean Smull, Bethany Grey, Kris Smull, Jared Shuger and Sara Shuger. Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. After the burial, a time of fellowship will be held at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.
Visitation was held Sunday, Sept. 21, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Wilton United Methodist Church or Lutheran Homes.
Mr. Smull, was born Oct. 16, 1910, in Sweetland Township in Muscatine County, the son of William Irwin and M. Elizabeth Barnard Smull. He married Dorothy G. Birkhofer in Rock Island, Ill. on July 30, 1932.
He worked a variety of jobs. He owned a dairy in Muscatine and he owned a pie company in Ariz. He was a flight foreman at Marana Air Force Base in Arizona and farmed until his retirement.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wilton and the Methodist Men.
His survivors include, two sons, Willard I. Smull, Jr. and his wife, Sondra of Bisbee, Ariz. and John W. Smull and his wife, Edna of Burlington; six grandchildren, Scott, Kevin and Sean Smull, Bethany Grey, Kris Smull and Janice L. Ziegenhorn Shuger and her husband, Mike of Wilton. Janice was raised by Dorothy and Willard as a daughter. Willard is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Jared, Sara, Samantha, Christopher and Madeline.
