You are talking about 2 families, Pearl Louvain SMY is the daughter of Rueben SMY b 1888 Colchester Essex, mother,Florence Millicent nee COOK, and George T & Rueben Robert SMY are the sons of Rueben SMY born 1882 Orford, Suffolk, mother, Annie Louise BORRETT.

My grandfather Ernest Smye had a brother, I believe his name was Arthur, who emigrated to Canada, and lived in Simcoe, Ontario.

I just found your post, and although you posted 5 years ago I hope you get this message! My Great-Grandmother was Pearl Louvain Smy, her father was Rueben Smy, born 1883 in Orford. I have the Smy information all the way back to William Smy, born 1766 (James' father). I would love to share info with you. One piece of the puzzle I'm missing though is Rueben's wife's name (Pearl/George/RuebenRobert's mother). If you have that information I would be very greaful!

George SMY (chr 5th Oct 1823, Butley Sfk) married Pheobe LOVE on the 12th Oct 1845 Suffolk, George's parents are William SMY & Eliza nee BUTCHER.
Sara Ann SMY chr 27th June 1847 Butley Sfk, I think she married a John SMITH on the 25th Dec 1869 Tunstall, Suffolk.

I do not know if we are related or not but, however I have been trying to trace any descendents of Frederick Herbert T Smy born 1919 in Suffolk.

I am aware that his son Michael has previously tried to contact any family members and my mother would be delighted to make contact with him. If you have any contact details this would be great

Hi all,

Has anyone come across William H SMY born 1903 in Suffolk?

He married Ethel BARKER on 16 Feb 1929 in Birmingham, Warwickshire and died 18 Dec 1977 in Barstaple, Devon.

I have found a registration for a William Henry G SMYE in Oct-Nov-Dec 1903 in Plomesgate (Volume 4a, Page 1084) and presume this is him.

I was hoping to find more info about his parents before forking out for a copy of the birth certificate as funds are somewhat limited to say the least!

I have traced 4 of his offspring (Jean, Donald, Brenda and Frances) and I have pretty comprehensive information about the ancestors of Ethel BARKER - see the Williams Family Tree web site at w-f-t.co.uk.

So, if there are any SMYs out there who would like to get in touch please do so.

I have just come across this site and I have a family tree going back to James Smy born 1854 Orford with some. gaps though. My husband is Chris Smy and his father was Reuben Robert his brother was George and their father Reuben born 1883 orford. The churchyard in Orford is full of Smys and we are certain thats where the name originated. Some Smys went to Aldeburgh and they seem to have spread from these two places. If I can help or anyone has more information we may be able to swap notes.

SMY family mis translations.

I hope this helps anyone out there that has had the same problem following the name Smy. Due to mis translations from the census my line of Smys are under the name of SING in 1861. SURY in 1871. SUSY in 1881. SURY 1891 and SMEY in 1901.Today I think I have at last found a birth record for my GGrandmother and that is under the name IMY.

I am looking for Norfolk Smy's. My Great Grandfather was called Alfred Robert Smy b. 1885. I can trace the Smy's no further back than his father Henry Smy b. 1842. Here are his details:

HENRY SMY [b. 1842 Norwich, Norfolk, d.1894].
Married ~ Ann Maria Baxter [b.1849 Norwich, Norfolk, d. 1900].

CHILDREN (all born in Norfolk, Norwich)
Caroline Amelia Smy [b. 1874, m. 1901 Ernest Folk Cannell]
Harry George Smy [b. 1877, d. 1907]
John Thomas Smy [b.1884]
Gertrude Sarah L Smy [b. 1887]
Alfred Robert Smy [b. 1885, m. Hilda]
Marjorie Smy [b. 1894]

There are only an handful of Smy's listed as living in Norfolk in the 1861 Census, which leads me to believe they most probably moved from Suffolk a generation or two before.

Any leads would be most appreciated!

I'm researching my grandmothers side of our family her mothers maiden name was Smy.
I've found her grandparents were George Smy and Jenny Searle,they were married in 1888.According to the 1901 census, Jenny and daughter Margaret Smy lived in the Grimsby area but no mention of George.
Any information to George or his ancestors would be a great help.

Born 27th Dec 1895 at Dallinghoo Suffolk.
Died abt 1939 at Wibtoft Liec.
Married Hilda Margaret CROSS 12th Feb 1925. Claybrooke Leics.
Parents of William Frederick SMY are Clement SMY b abt 1859 Orford Suffolk & Sarah nee BRUNDLE b abt 1861 Sudbourne.

I can take this family back to 1793 and put you in contact with another researcher of the same line.

My father Philip Sydney Smy was born on May 19, 1909 and his father was William George Smy. Could this possibly be William3 born abt. 1867 or even possibly William born abt.1858.

The following is my summary as best I can remember:-

William George Smy b 1860's? d 1950's? (Age 88 seem familiar)
Wife unknown but died before 1934

Children
William (married to Mable adopted son David)
Philip Sydney (my father) b May 19, 1909 at Aldeburgh, Suffolk
d April 19, 1993 at Gosport, Hants
married to Marjorie Killick
James d at age 18 +/-
Alfred (believe he died in second world war)
Henry (nothing known)
Harold (Lived in Ipswich all his life - married to Gladys - son Stephen)
Kath (killed in second world war - no children)
Rose (never married - d at age 90 +/-)
Dorothy (never married - d at age about 95 +/-)

I have a photo showing another woman called Ena but my father never mentioned her.
It is also possible that Alfred was not a son but a Son-in-law married to Kath.

I hope that this info will be of value to you. If not maybe you can see a remote connection that may stear me in the right direction.

We Smys are few and far between.
I was born in Guildford, England to Philip and Marjorie.
My father Philip was, I do believe, one of ten children.
He was born in the Woodbridge are of Suffolk on May 19, 1909.
I saw the entry for John Smy born in Suffolk 1805 and have reviewed the names but unfortunately none are familiar.

Hi just found this site. My Father was Edward William Richard Smy sisters being Eva, Lillian and Kathleen. His Fathers name was Herbert Smy who married Emily sorry don't know her last name.
The only information I have of the family is that his Father originally came from Suffolk England on marriage he moved to Burton on Trent Staffordshire England.
