I am also doing some research. I am Bill Snelling's daughter. I've researched before access to ancestry. If my memory serves me correctly Cornelius' middle name was Zebulon. I believe his military records were very commendable. I'll contact you when I finish this research.

I knew that - Erma had twelve children. I posted an old reply to Lowe/Watson today. I'm assuming that is from Dot Watson - Erma's first child and Irene and Dad's first cousin. I met her probably 8 years ago (saw her at Grandad's funeral back in 75). Dot is a true southern bell. She was the daughter of Erma's first husband that was killed on the job in the plant in Graniteville - I think Bob Watson.

Thanks so much for the info. I was in continous contact with Nancy for a couple of years and then became so busy with my children and my work that we lost touch. She's quite a hoot! I'm so sorry about your dad. Even looking the ancestry info up again has brought some tears to my eyes after two years. I don't think my mother is aware that Irene passed away. They wrote for years - my mom is very dry but sweet and pretty funny. She's pretty blunt so I'm sure the letters are funny. My dad met my mom when Grandaddy and Nanny moved to Flat Rock to retire. My mom's family is from Hendersonville. We would go a few times a year to visit. Uncle James and aunt Ruby had a little roadside shop in Flat Rock. Gradon and Marie would come over from Asheville. Their daughter Tina is currently married to Harold Johnson. They live in Durham. Harold is the president of the Bonsai Society right now and there's plenty of info about him on the internet. Tina, of course, is very sweet and intelligient as were most of the Snellings. Katie was Gradon and Marie's baby. Morehead scholar to UNC. I think she lives in Charleston right now. My brother - Layne- is the spitting image of my dad! There must have been some strong genes. When my dad walked into Grandon's funeral everyone looked at him and gasped!!! Again - the resemblence to his brother was uncanny. Larry Lowe still calls my mom quite a bit (Irma's son). We ran into Debbie (Irma's daughter) at Myrtle Beach about 7-8 years ago and my dad cried. He loved his family so much and always missed South Carolina. We visited the house they grew up in in Graniteville. My dad said that it was haunted.

Lisa..
My mother Ann or Irams's Daughter Nancy would have lots of info for you.. Mostly Nancy.
When my grandmother Irene died, Nancy shared with me MANY scanned photos of our family from WAY WAY back.I have a few of your father. Some of "Grimmy" have you heard of her .. I am sure. I have a picture of your mom and dad that belonged to my grandmother that they had taken perhaps 15 to 20 years back?? not positive.. it is beautiful , though only a wallet size.
My mother talks of Uncle Bill often and loved him DEARLY.
Her grandfahter " Daddy" James Snelling was her Heart.
Most all are still in Grantiteville, my grandmother Irene moved to Michigan Back in the early 50's and came back and got my mother Ann when she was in her senior year of Hihg School ( she was living with "daddy" and " Nanny" and was very unhappy to be moved. She married my father Bobby Lilly ( who just died July 16th of this year) they divorced in 1975 or so and my mother remarried into the name Hubert ( since divorced.. Thank God ) we lived in michigan until 1985... then moved to
Clearwater Florida.. Now there is one of your Aunts that lived in Fort Lauderdale I believe or close to it, not sure if she is still alive..
You hit the jackpot for info here for our family if you talk to Nancy for the Snellings.. and my mom can fill in some other things as your dad and my grandmother ( his sister) wrote OFTEN.. I have some of the letters somewhere packed when I moved to keep as keepsakes of my grandmothers.
Is it you or a sister who is /was into ballet.. is there a Tina?

I am looking for descendants of a Mr. Snelling who was married to a Janzen (Mennonite from Ukraine). The family was probably in Minnesota in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They had six children - three boys and three girls, I think. The family might also have located in Canada, Kansas, or Washington state at some time.

I'm with you on the excited part. I received the information concerning the positive African DNA of Asa Snelling. I am related thru my grandfather -- his gr-gr grandmother was Elizabeth Snelling (Eliza, Betsey) -- she married John Walker in Maine and they went to Canada and then to Vermont, I believe. Their daughter Elsie Walker Horn was my gr-gr-gr grandmother. She was born in Canada, but lived most of her life in Holland, Vermont. She was listed as mulatto on at least a couple censuses, as was her daughter, Clara Horn Pomeroy. I, too, found a letter amongst my grandparents albums concerning the family line -- " Mark Snelling, a Spanish Nobleman coming to America with someone from the royal courts. There is much more if you are interested. I think it is fantastic that you found the postive DNA match, and believe it makes our heritage that much greater !! I would love to hear if you had more information on Asa Snelling. Mine is very limited. I did find where a sister of my gr-gr-gr grandmother married Martin Becker. He apparently was born in New Guinea/ West Indies, served in the Civil War (lived in fitchburg, mass.), was involved in the Underground Railroad, and then was involved in the Reconstruction Period in South Carolina. All very exciting ! She, and her children, were all listed as black - instead of mulatto -like my gr-gr-gr grandmother.
She was well thought of in the town of Fitchburg, and I even found a photograph of she and Martin. She definitely looks African/American, along with some Indian that I believe she has from her father's side (John Walker). I have found more on her, then I have on my own gr-gr-gr grandmother !!

Thanks for your note -- we will hope for the best with the monument. Shawna
Hi Sandy --

I am currently researching the Snelling line of my grandfather. He is descended from the Snelling branch thru Eliza/Betsey Snelling (sister to Asa Elmer). She married John Walker in Greene, Maine - moved to Canada, and then settled in the Holland area of Vermont. I would love to see the picture you mentioned of Asa Elmer and his wife. Eliza's children were listed in the censuses as Mulatto - did you find this with Asa Elmer also? If possible, please send me an e-mail and I will then let you know my address. Thanks so much for your time.

Shawna in Vermont

shuttle19@comcast.net

Brillant Paul! Since they married in St Mary's there's a chance they stayed around to have some children? I can wait until you purchase your next lot of baptisms for St Mary's. :)

Karenn

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your response. Someone else found another child for me, Leslie Colin Snelling. The family seemded to have moved away from the area after Wiliam died in 1896. I am interested in another family though, Frederick Bryant North and wife Alice Mary Hutchings. They married in 1906 in Frensham, Surrey. If you have access to the birth records for this area, I'd love to know if they had any children.

Cheers
Karenn :)

HI Karenn.

I have the marriage certificate for Frederick and Alice
15 Sept 1906 St Mary's Frensham Surrey. But sadly my Frensham Bapts start at 1850 and stop 1906. Do you know if Frederick and Alice stayed in the Frensham area? I have records for St Andrews Farnham. St James Rowledge. St Peters Wrecclesham. St Johns Hale. St Marys Frensham. St Thomas on the Bourne. St Georges Badshot Lea. St Peters Ash.

I will be obtaining St Marys Frensham Bapts 1906 by the end of this month October but looking at BDM site I cant see any births for Alice and Frederick so far.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Hi Karenn

I am sorry to say that the St Marys's Frensham bapts 1906 on are still with the church. They do have to deposit them for 100 years after the last entry so its going to be a long wait. "I suspect the book is still in use". But don't worry I will there when they do! Never mind eh.

Paul

Re: Snelling DNA

Hi Cousin Shawna,

I hope to visit Vermont and Maine some day.

I am descended from Betsy's brother Aaron, my 3rd grgrandfather. His son Moses was an abolitionist in Illinois, at whose home a group was organized that would become famous as the "Goose Pond Church" in the history books because Lincoln spoke there. My great grandfather was David Perry Snelling, a longtime Civil War soldier. Moses moved to Oregon here and David and his wife both had tuberculosis from the war and maybe coal disease because of their business activity afterward moved southward.

I have heard all the stories, including David's letter to us about our ancestry that he detailed without grandmother Snelling Dowen. African DNA from Barcelona with royalty or those of sizeable means is unheard of. We have many matches from Nigeria and Cameroon.

There is a momument for free people and their supporters that will hopefully be built in Washington D.C. It has bipartisan support and I hope to meet you there at that occasion. There will be a write-up about Asa on the website (and I'm hugely honored as his descendant). See http://www.libertyfunddc.org/

I hope all Snellings contribute to the DNA project and remind Asa Snelling descendants that we are still Snellings. Contact me anytime.

Donna

Hello, My name is Randy Snelling. Let me give you a break down for my anscesty, ocording to your synopsis.
I am a direct decendant, of the Benjamin you mention having a Will in 1774, of which I have a copy of from ancestry.com.
Benjamin who died in 1774, had a son also named Benjamin.
That Benjamin, had a son named Franklin.
Franklin Had a Son named Benjamin.
That Benjamin had a son named James.
James is the father, of my late Great Grandfather, Oscar, who was born in Bath Co. Kentucky, 1905. Who recently died, in 2002.
His Father, James, moved our family to Colorado, in the early 1900's. Their occupation was farming, as it was in Kentucky, where it has been said had owned, several acres of tobacco. Is this information helpful, in finding any decendents?

I'm trying to find marriage for Freda Florence Snelling, born 28 March 1923, Catford London. Mother: Elizabeth Florence (nee) Dow, Father: George Frederick Snelling (my maternal grandfather).

Freda is my maternal grandfather's only child from his first marriage. He was divorced from Elizabeth in early 1930's (interested in divorce details too!).

I can find no marriage record for Freda. My mother (Freda's half sister; 1st daughter from 2nd marriage) believes Freda was married to John Paige (Page, Paice, Pace) who was in the army, wore a red beret (paratrooper?). Marriage was probably circa 1940.

Can't find John Paige either...

Can't find death record for Freda either... although she may still be alive (85)

Any help gratefully received
