Apparently great-great grandfather William enlisted in the civil war when his youngest of eight children, our great grandfather George, was just four months old... William died 6 months after he enlisted at age 40.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your ofice of its application for pension file 12540 and o return it herewith with such information as is furnished by the files of this office.
It appears from the rollson file in this office that William Sniffen was enrolled on the 2nd day of Oct 1861 at Hartford in Co. I, 10th Regiment of Conn Volunteers to serve three years or during the war and mustered into service as a musician on the 2nd day of Oct 1861 at Hartford in Co. I 10th Regiment of Conn. Volunteers to serve three years or during the war. On the muster roll of Co. I of that Regiment for the months of May and June 1862 he is reported as died in Hospital at Newbern June 16th 1862. Cause of death not stated no further records on file.

Sarah Sniffen a resident of Greenwich in the County of Fairfield and State of Connecticut aged 37 years who being first duly sworn according to law,doth on her oath make the following declarations, in order to obtainthe benefit of the provision made by the Act f Congress approved July 14th 1862, that she is the widow of William Sniffen who was a drummer in Company I commanded by Daniel M.Mead in the 10th Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers in the War of 1861, who on or about the 16th day of June, 1862 came to his death by reason of Eycasyaclas (sp?) contracted in the line of his duty.
She further declares that she was married to the said William Sniffen on the 12th day of August in the year 1845 that her husband the aforesaid William Sniffen died on the day above mentioned and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. She also declares that she has not in any manner been engaged in or aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States

That on the 24th day of April, 1861 this deponent attended in a professional capacity Sarah M. Sniffen, the wife of William Sniffen and delivered her a male child whose name is George H(olly) Sniffen.
That deponent made an entry of such birth in his regular account book and that the foregoing statement was made by him after careful examination of said book and that said statement he knows to be true. Deponent is not interested in this matter.
