Snowball Family in Woolwich

I have an ancestor Ermina Snowball born in Greenwich in 1796. I can't find her parents but then again I can't find many Snowballs in Greenwich or Woolwich at all. Ermina married in 1816 in St Mary Magedelenes Church in Woolwich to George William Saunders after which they moved to Gloucestershire.
I would be very interested in help in finding Snowball familys in the Kent area at this time to see if there is any link. Of course they could have moved down from the Northumberland area but I can't tell at this time.

Re: Snowball Family Tree Fort Wayne, IN

I'm not sure whether or not the Snowball family I have come across connects to yours or not. They were in Vandenburgh County, IN, then went to Indianapolis. It was a fairly large family, however. Here's all I know about them:

1900 census - Pigeon, Vanderburgh Co., IN
Ralph Snowball, age 49, was said to have been born in Cuba, and his immigration was 1855. His parents were said to have been born in Cuba. His wife was "Kate" (Katherine on 1920 census), age 36, born in Delaware. In the home with them were four children: John R., born 1889 PA; Charles, born 1894 PA; Elizabeth, born 1896 Delaware; and James born 1900 Vanderburgh County, IN.

By 1910, Ralph Snowball's family had increased by another three sons: George Francis, born 1902 IN; Harry, born about 1905 IN; and Joseph, born about 1907 IN.

On the 1920 census, son John R. (above, b. 1889 PA) had married Nellie, and had two sons of his own: Ralph (probably named after his grandfather) b. about 1914, and a young John R. Snowball, b. 3 August 1917 IN (Soc. Sec. Death Index says this John R. died 21 Aug. 1977).

Daughter Elizabeth (born June 1896 Delaware) married Mack Snowden, and had a daughter, Ruth V. Snowden b. about 1920 in IN.

Son George Francis Snowball (b. 13 January 1902 IN) married Lorena Webb, who was born about 1905 IN. She was the daughter of William H. and Ella (Cazee) Webb.

Hi, Sandy,
Am back in my geneaology mode again and was reading the snowball message boards. In 2005 you replied to a girl asking about an Anthony in 1758. I have him, but he was a brother of William who married Violetta Chambers and that's who we come down through. So you have the same family info that was sent to me? Did I send it to you? Hope to hear from you.

Hi Margaret

It's very good of you to get in touch.
I've been doing quite a bit of family history over the years and most of my direct family ancstors during the 1700's to 1800's come from around Ovingham or the Gateshead area. George Laverick Snowball is the son of a William Snowball, who built up quite a business in the town, initially as a small draper then to a very large store employing nearly 200 people..
Snowball & Son was the first true departmental store in the country and has often been referred to as 'The Harrods of the North". There's quite a bit of information on it, if you try a Google search. The store was passed to his son, George Laverick Snowball, in 1882 and eventually was subject to a compulsory purchase order to make way for the building of the Tyne Bridge! The store moved to newer premises which are now part of a luxury Indian restaurant in Gateshead Quays.

I would very much appreciate a copy of the photograph. Thanks again for making contact.
Kind regards
Steve

Hi Tanya

I can remember my Grandma - Mary Botterill (Snowball's daughter) - talking about her father being good with horses. She also told my Mum that one of Snowball's brothers was a jockey in Holland. I haven't been able to find out which one though! My Grandma was always lucky on the horses so maybe it ran in the family!

Nikki

Hi Nikki
I actually had posted that info on the message board last Oct 2008 re Thomas Snowball of Duggleby and had a suspicion that Mary Botterill had given birth to Snowball as her son and given him the name of Botterill as his surname. I feel too that then Thomas Botterill is my GGGG Grandfather as Snowball born 1789 is my GGG grandfather. He married Rachel and I am descended from Maria their daughter who married Peter Stuart. Is the same family as yours do you think?
Tanya

Thomas Snowball of Duggleby, Yorkshire

In researching my GGGG Grandmother Mary Botterill I found the following in the East Riding Quarter Sessions

Thomas Snowball of Duggleby yeoman and John Hudson of Howsham gent. T.S. in bastardy (Mary Botterill of Scampston singlewoman). QSF/320/C/21 c1788

Mary had an illegitmate son, Snowball Botterill, in 1788 so I am assuming Thomas was the father. Snowball Botterill was my GGG Grandfather.

Does anyone have any information on this Snowball family. Duggleby is very near Kirby Grindalythe in Yorkshire and I have found a baptism for a Thomas Snowball there in 1738, but not sure if it's the same person.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Many thanks - Nikki

Hello again,

I have a little more information on Isabella Snowball.
I contacted a Steve Snowball who has a great website www.snowballfamilygenealogy.com and he gave me the following:

Isabella's parents married 4 Apr 1795 in Allendale, Northumberland. John Snowball's father was George Snowball and Margaret Wate's father was Henry Wate.

I do have the information on the children of Isabella Snowball and George Giles. They had 7 children in England and two more after emigrating to the US and settling in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Did I send that to you?

I would like to collect as much information as possbile on both Isabella Snowball and George Giles. We don't have his family information, either.

Thanks!

Chris Cattell

Valerie

If you go to
http://www.spatial-literacy.org/UCLnames/
which is a surname profiler, you can see the distribution of Snowballs in this period is firmly established in the North East of England. Snowball is pretty common! I have no Sarah Snowball, to date, at this time in my tree. It's possible, I suppose that Anthony Snowball is related but no links hitherto.

I've checked the IGI for your Andrew Bone but no luck here, also www. familyhistoryonline.net for both of your couple but nothing here either.

In some ways, your problem is a little similar to mine, as I have also tried to locate a marriage in 1786, which reveals on the parish marriage certificate, both groom and bride- to- be as 'of this parish'. This doesn't mean much, since the legal requirement for this description was only three weeks' residence in the parish, to enable banns to be called. The incentive for one of the couples, often the man, (since it was traditional to marry in the bride's parish) was to move in with his in- laws or into the parish and lodge for the necessary three weeks for the calling of the banns and therefore was of this parish when the marriage ceremony went ahead. This would prevent having to pay for the banns twice, being an expensive process.

I think locating Sarah's parish is key and a focus on her might get you her man! Good luck!
Steve

Hi Steven

Interesting theory! In response to your help, the only details are those provided on my previous email, namely that James Richardson was a witness to the 1786 marriage. The marriage certificate I have is a photocopy of the original from the Ovingham Parish chest, now housed at Northumberland Records Office. The other witness, John Laidler, is certainly the brother of the bride, Mary Laidler. I've added the certificate jpg. as an attachment.

I had a look on IGI last night for the children of Edward and Barbara Snowball, finding only Thomas (b. March 1757 d. March 1759), Barbary (b. Jan 1759), another Thomas (b.1762), William (c.1765) and Ann (c.1768) Are you aware of any George in this family born around 1758? Is there any evidence to support that Edward and Barbara had more than the five mentioned? I wonder if a George Snowball acted as a witness at any of the marriages of his siblings? Might be a route to explore? Thanks in the meantime.

Steve (East Sussex, UK)

Hi Ian
Hope you are well.
I have curiously been in touch with a distant cousin of yours, Murray Waldren in Sydney. Much the same information as I passed to you re. William Snowball has been exchanged. The correspondence between us prompted me to have another look at the RootsWeb site where a lady named Hilda had tried to upload a letter sent by Margret Elizabeth McAllum nee. Snowball to her grandmother and included the photo that we both have of Margret ('Meg') and baby Kathleen. The upload never happened and although I have tried to contact Hilda again, I thought I'd try a fall back, in case it failed.
Did you ever manage to get the letter yourself? It's about 5 sides long! If so, could you send a copy? s.snowball@virgin.net is my usual route. I have some updated info. on William which I could send if you are interested.
Kind regards
Steve

Re: SNOWBALL Family from Harlow Hil and Ovingham areas of Northumberland

Hi Steve

Thanks for getting in touch again. It's been frustrating and I'm no further forward!

Here's the issues no facing me for the parents of elusive George Snowball.George Snowball was born around 1758. He was certainly buried at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Ovingham, Northumberland on 10th June 1824, aged 66 years, verified by his death certificate. Therefore, depending when his birthday was, he could have been born either in 1758 if he had his 66th birthday before June, or 1757 if he had not. George married Mary Laidler on 25th June 1786 also at St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church in Ovingham and settled in the area for his lifetime. Mary was born in 1760 and was baptised in St. Cuthbert’s Parish Church, Allendale on 20th July 1760, the daughter of Daniel and Jane Laidler, of Jack’s Bank, Allendale.

However, as you know I have tried searching for a George Snowball around Northumberland or Co. Durham parishes and results seem to solely lead to a George Snowball, son of Anthony Snowball but there appears to be no way of proving this.

According to IGI and www.familysearch.org, Anthony Snowball was born about 1719 in Boldon, County Durham and married Anne Merriman (born about 1724 in Boldon) at St. Nicholas Parish Church, Boldon, on 26th May 1745. This couple had seven children, all christened in Boldon. They were: Anne (christened on 31st March 1746), Elizabeth (christened on 31st January 1747), John (christened on 15th September 1751), Anthony (christened on 17th June 1753), Mary (christened on 7th March 1756), George (christened on 21st October 1759) and William (christened on 5th May 1765).

It is the George Snowball, who was christened in 1759 that interests me. It’s pretty close to the birthdate of around 1758. However, the online records of St Nicholas's parish marriage records (1573-1837) at www.genuki.org.uk show the various marriages of Merriman brides (Anne 28 May 1742, Jane 24 May 1744, Mary 1 May 1745 and Mary 5 May 1747) but I can't find any Snowball grooms!

Also, curiously, Anthony is also recorded on IGI as marrying Jane Coupland on 31st May 1740 in Ryton, County Durham. I wonder if this was his first marriage or just another Anthony Snowball? Ryton is very close to Ovingham, Bolden less so

I've now obtained a photocopy of the original marriage (attached) by Banns from the Northumberland Records Office. A transcript reads
"A.D.1786 married. Banns of a Marriage was published in this Church between George Snowball & Mary Laidler both of this Parish June the 4th, the 11th & the 18th 1786 by me Chris. Gregson, Curate George Snowball & Mary Laidler both of this Parish were married in this church by Bannes this Twenty Fifth Day of June, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Six by me Chris. Gregson, Curate. Their marriage was solomnised between George Snowball (X his mark) & Mary Laidler (X her mark)in the Presence of us John Laidler (X his mark) & James Richardson (X his mark)."

From this, I'm still no further forward on George's birthplace and parentage. George Snowball (on this document) only needed to be resident in Ovingham for three weeks, before being declared 'of this parish' and probably moved into his in-laws, or into lodgings, to escape the cost of banns being called in two different parishes.

If George Snowball and Mary were following the social conventions of the day (i.e. The English Naming Pattern) they would have called their first son, Anthony, and their second daughter Anne. The second son would have been called after Mary's father. This was clearly overlooked as George and Mary Snowball had three children, Mary (b. 1787), John (b. 1790) and George (b. 1793)! Again, it defies the link between George and his suspected father, Anthony.

I have asked Northumberland Collections Service to do a search also but their results have also drawn a blank. They have searched the Wills and Administrations at the District Probate Registery at Durham and searched the transcript of baptisms of St. Mary the Virgin, Ovingham from 1750-1765. There is no reference to George Snowball at either or in the baptism records of St. Cuthbert's Allendale. They have searched contiguous parishes to St. Mary, Ovingham but have found no reference to the baptism of George Snowball. These included St. Mary the Virgin (Stamfordham), Stamfordham Presbyterian Church, St. Andrew's (Heddon on the Wall), St. Peter's (Bywell), St. Andrew's (Bywell) and Ryton in Co. Durham.

I could well be on a wild goose chase over Anthony being George's father but this won't be the first time! This is a serious brick wall.
I'll look into your suggestions meanwhile and see if it brings any light.
Best Wishes
Steve Snowball, East Sussex, UK

I am researching the Bone family in my family tree. I know Andrew Bone married a Sarah Snowball in1807. Andrew was a tailor in South Shields, I have searched the parish records for the marriage in South Shields but found nothing so I assume Sarah came from somewhere else and was married at her home church.Could she possibly be a descendent of your Anthony.
Valerie Morgan

Hi Steve
Thankyou for your help. The surname website you mentioned is fascinating. I'll keep searching, it will obviously be a help that the Snowballs are so concentrated in the north-east.
regards Valerie
