My Grandmother was Vivian Dugas, born Wiktoria Sobczyk. She was the sister of Kunegunda Amelisko. My grandmother lived in Enfield, CT, and I lived in her house with my parents when I was very young. I remember visiting many of her brothers and sisters in the Springfield, MA area.

I have the ship's roster of the ship they came on with Piotr and Anna; it was hard to find because their last name was misspelled; I think it was spelled "Sobrcyk."

I also have information about when Roman Amelisko (I think back then his name was spelled Ameliszko) arrived in the US. I have been in contact with your aunts Helen and Sophie and have sent Helen some of this info.

I also have looked through Polish Catholic Church birth records from the town of Słowikowa, Siedlce, Nowy Sącz, Krakowskie, Poland, where they were from, and found birth records for Hipolit, Kunegunda and Teofila (Theresa). I found that Piotr's parents were named Adelbert Sobczyk and Sophie Pomietko, and Anna's parents were Jan Roziak and Katarzyna (I cannot read the last name). The records are very hard to read because the handwriting is difficult and they are written in Latin. I have most of the birth, marriage and death records for this town for most of the 19th century, but have not yet looked through them much because they are so difficult to read.

Good morning. You've kindly sent me a private reply but I can't find where that would have been posted. It might be because my subscription to this website is very old and one of the most basic, free ones. I only happened to arrive here because of another project I was asked to look over.

I'd very much love to read some of the info you've worked hard to find and will look forward to your post in the near future. Maybe you can tell me where your post would be listed so I can open it?

Rome

Just to be sure, my address is romanpolaski@cox.net I'd love to help you fill in any contemporary gaps. I'm the oldest of 4 boys from Irene Amelisko/Polaski. She married Edward J. Polaski from Scanton, PA. I'm 57, my youngest brother is 47 with two in between.

Rome

Your request was posted in 2007. I don't know if you've received a reply since then.

My grandmother's parents were Peter and Anna Sobczyk and the did live not too far from Krakow. I don't believe the came through Ellis Island but I might be incorrect about that. They had three daughters: Kunagunda, Irene, and Theresa. They lived in the Springfield, MA area.

I'm curious. Does this sound familiar to you at all? It might be just a coincidence that the names are the same but maybe not!

Roman Polaski
Connecticut USA

Julie,

Richard Bates contacted me recently. He does extensive research of the Polish families through Duluth. He's going to snail-mail some info to me, but this is where you and I connect:

Ludwig SOBCZAK <--Yours
b. 22 Aug 1861
Skrzebowa, , , Poland

Father - Stanislaus SOBCZAK
Mother - Francisca SKOWRONEK
m. 25 Nov 1860

Ignacz SOBCZAK <--Mine
b. 25 Jan 1846
Pogrzybow, Ostrow Wlkp, Poznan, Poland
d. 2 Sep 1912
Gnesen Twp, St Louis, Minnesota

Father - Stanislaus SOBCZAK
Mother - Hedrigis KUSOWNA or KUSA
m. bef 1846

They had at least one other child:

Marianna SOBCZAK
b. 11 Aug 1849

So, your Ludwig and my Ignaci are step brothers! Again, all of this information came from Richard Bates. He's not directly related to the Sobczak line, but he has kept records of most of the Polish names through the Duluth area (which is wonderful) and was so nice to share it with me. So please credit this information to him in your sources.

Please contact me direct if you'd like. I can share all of the information that he sends me with you.

Amber

Hi Renee,
I am very interested in learning more about my great uncle Mike.I have have been offline for a few months and am quite pleased to see your post.Unfortunately there are still many mysteries in the Sobczyk search. All of those name changes sure don't help. My mom is Louis Sobrek's daughter.I understand Loius and Mike had some sort of falling out resulting in his changing his last name to Sobrek.I was not aware of the Sobreck spelling.I'd be happy to contact you and give you everything i have so far.I have an aunt also digging for info and have been in touch with one of Thomas' daughters in Faribault.I guess the most interesting thing I found so far is that Ludwig had been married 3 times, with the children of his second or 3rd wife also being placed in the orphanage I believe a total of 12 of his and hers combined.Hers from her first marriage. Are you in the Owatonna area?I hope to hear from you again. Thanks alot,Julie

I am Mike Sobrack's granddaughter, he lived his life in Owatonna, MN. He had 5 children and he died in the 60's. I can help piece Mike's end a bit together, if you're interested, but I would also be interested in hearing about Mike's siblings. I didn't know Mike personally (he died prior to my birth), but am aware of the beating death of his mother, placement of himself and at least some of his siblings in an orphanage. I was also aware of the name change from Sobczyk to Sobrack. I have relatives in Northfield that spell it Sobreck, so I gather there have been several variations.

Hi Beth,
The orphanage my grandpa and his brothers and sisters were sent to was in Owatonna MN.
I had to go to the MN Historical Society to find their records.
My greatgrandfather was Ludwig or Louis Sobczyk,at least that was listed as his name on the 1900 St Louis county census.
I think Ludwig probably had brothers and sisters but I have no idea who they were.I have hit a dead end in my search,it is all such a mystery. There were Sobczaks in St Louis county as well,I wonder if there was a relation since changing names and spellings was so common.
Ludwig ws born in1861 somewhere in Poland.
Hope this helps.
Julie

You may alread know this, but on the 1900 Census there are 7 children listed. On the 1910 census, Ludwig is listed alone (Gnesen Twp, St Louis, Mn)

The children in 1900 are:

Thomas (Dec 1887 - MN)
George (Apr 1888 - MN)
Victoria (Dec 1891 - MN)
Michael or Michah (Sep 1893/94)
Magdalena (Jun 1895)
Ludwig (Aug 1896)
Anton (Jun 1898)

I have this information because this family was listed near my Sobczyk line, and I feel that they may be brothers or cousins. My Sobczyk is

Ignaci "Eugene" SOBCZYK
b. Feb 1847, German Poland

He married Rosalia NOVAK or NOWAK (b. 1851) in 1871 in Poland. They had 8 children.

Do you know of any other siblings for Ludwig? Could this be his brother? This line changed the spelling of their name to SUBJECT in the early 1900s. They remain in the Duluth, St Louis, MN area.

Amber
frosco at softhome dot net

Julie,
I am helping a gentleman from our church look for his Sobczak ancestry. His father's name was Valentine Sobczak, b. 1897 (give or take a couple of years), son of John Sobczak and Rose Mak. Valentine was born in Minneapolis, MN, as far as we know. Valentine married Elsa Budinger, an immigrant from Germany, b. 1885. Valentine had his name legally changed in 1944 to William George Miller, but had been using this name for many years before that. My friend, who is 70 years old, never remembers going by Sobczak. His father never talked about his family. He only remembers an Uncle named Walt who may or may not have gone by Miller as well.

I'm wondering if the family you discussed in your message might be the same and that John might be one of the children put in the home for neglected children. Is there any way to find out where this home was or who the other children were?

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Beth Webb

SOBCZYK in MN

My GGrandfather was born in Poland. He married Balbina Kucharski and they lived in Gnesen MN.His name was Ludwig or Ludwik Sobczyk.
They had 10 or 12 children of which I only know the names of 5...Thomas,Mike,Anton,Victoria and Louis my Grandpa.
Ludwig beat Balbina to death and the children were removed from the home and sent to Owatonna MN to the school for neglected children.
There was an article printed in the Duluth Herald around 1903-1905 which showed a picture of Anton and Louis Sobczyk along with the story of Ludwig.
The name was later changed to Sobrack and in my family's case, Sobrek after grandpa had a falling out with his brother Mike.
If anyone is familiar with these Sobczyks' please leave a message.Thank you.Julie
