Thank you for posting, David. I find this VERY interesting and quite plausible. Louisa's youngest son Frank Davis, my great-grandfather, worked on the railway all his life, and as a result my father, his grandson, was found a job with the GWR in the depression of the early 1930's - he too stayed until he retired. Louisa also had a son George and a daughter Elizabeth - named after her parents? I shall look for a baptism record for her. Many thanks. Glenys.

Hi. I may be able to shed some light on why you're finding it difficult to pin down your great great grandmother's family, although I can't give you any concrete information.
I think it is likely that Louisa Sodon was the daughter of a Navvy. There is a branch of the Soden/Sodon clan, from which my wife descends, who were railway navvies from the earliest days of the railways until the early 20th century. I have strong reasons to suspect that before this they were also canal navvies.
The earliest Soden I have documentary proof of is my wife's great great grandfather Francis Soden, who was born in Abergavenny in 1827. I cannot prove any connection, but I believe Francis may be Louisa's elder brother.
Francis's earliest appearance on the census is in 1851, when he is working as a railway labourer in the village of Shrewley, Warwickshire, 5 miles west of Leamington. He is clearly unsure of his origins (as a navvy's child would be) and states that he was born "near Berkshire". My guess is that Francis spent his early years along the route of the Great Western Railway as his father worked on it's construction. In every other census throughout his life he states his birthplace as Abergavenny, so he must have checked with relatives.
A Francis Charles Soden was baptised at Farnham Royal (15 miles east of Reading) in 1832, by his mother Elizabeth Soden. The GWR reached Reading in the late 1830's, but if the Soden/Sodon family had a temporary home there then Louisa may well have been born there, or at least may have remembered no earlier place.
Abergavenny is an interesting location for navvy history. Because of the terrain, continuous canals to transport coal and other goods were not practical. Instead lengths of canal were linked by "tramroads" - horse drawn railways. Any canal navvy working here in the 1820's would have learnt skills which became very useful when the railway age began to take off around 1825-1830. I reckon Francis's father was a canal navvy who turned to railway work.
Francis worked on the railways of central & southern England throughout his life, and founded a railway navvy dynasty. After he retired he moved to Coulsdon in Surrey, where at least one of his own grandsons was born. I believe (but again cannot prove) that Francis had become familiar with Coulsdon through visiting an older relative (father or uncle), George Soden who lived there for many years, and who was also a railway navvy. George was born at Milton in Buckinghamshire (now Milton Keynes) at the time the Grand Junction Canal was cut through it.
Of course, all this may be of no interest at all to you, as Louisa may be from an entirely different family. But if she is one of the "navvy Sodens" then their intinerant lifestyle might explain why it isn't easy to find records of her parent family.
Good luck with your search.

My great-greatgrandmother Louisa Sodon, husband William Davis. They were both born in Reading and appear on censuses there in 1861,1871,1881. However their 2nd and 3rd of 7 children (Susan 1857, William 1859) were born in Leamington, Warwickshire - family link? Anyone know her parents?

Sodens in Leeds

Another point regarding Sodens in Leeds. There are numerous people named Sowden in Yorkshire (and in Leeds). It is possible that persons named Soden were recorded in the census as 'Sowden' simply because that name was more familiar to a Yorkshire census recorder.
I have never yet attempted to sift through the Sowden clan for possible Sodens, although one day I maybe will when time is available.
If you believe there is a Soden connection to Leeds you will need to have a little more detail, ideally first names and dates of birth, marriage or death. If you have any more information you'd care to share I for one would be interested, as I'd love to find some more Sodens in the north of England, and I'd happily assist in the search.
Best Regards
Dave Seccull

Sodens in Leeds

I'm afraid I haven't yet come across any sign of Soden people in Leeds. Of course this doesn't mean that there haven't been Sodens in the Leeds area.
Typically the Sodens in England are located in the midlands and the south, but there are exceptions. From the 1841 census I found the following:-
- 6 youngsters aged from 2 to 25, probably siblings, in King Street, West Derby, Liverpool. Names Emma, Mary, Martha, Matilda, Benjamin & Sarah. These could be recent arrivals from Ireland fleeing the famine as King street is near the docks. Or maybe their parent worked on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, finished in 1816 at the Liverpool end only half a mile away. Possibly something else entirely.
- George Soden, 45, living with the Stockdale family at Crake Hall, Bedale, North Yorkshire, about 25 miles north of Leeds.
- Samuel & Elizabeth Soden (both 25) and their baby daughter Phoebe, living in Warwick Road, Carlisle, Cumbria. Samuel was a Draper by trade. Could he be the son of someone working on the Carlisle ship canal, finished in 1823 when he was 7 years old? Or is he descended from Irish stock?
- William Soden a 30 year old Carrier living in Deansgate, central Manchester. He could have come from anyplace to this great city.
Of course all of my suggestions here are only conjecture. Good luck with your search!

It may not help me in a direct sence, but this certainly give me a lot of useful information that I can use to continue my search once again.

Now that I know this, maybe I can find a connection.
Re: Soden, Bellfield and Hall in Warwickshire

Hi
I also am interested in the Soden family. My wife was a Soden, descended from a line of railway builders. I have traced her direct paternal line back to the early 1800s, folowing the history of the railways as much as the genealogy. Before the advent of steam powered railways in 1825, this branch of the Soden family made their living constructing the canal system throughout Britain. They are difficult to trace because of their itinerant way of life, leaving scanty and scattered records.
There is a clan of Sodens that has been based in Warwickshire since the English Civil War of 1642-1651. These guys are likely to have descended from German mercenary troops employed by Oliver Cromwell. Some of the German mercenaries were also sent by Cromwell into Ireland, and the Irish branch of the family descends from them.
I can't yet tell you whether the canal-building Sodens come from the Warwickshire branch or the Irish branch. Some of the earliest canal projects in England were in Warwickshire, but canals began to be built in Ireland slightly earlier than in England, and some Irish labourers were brought to England where their experience was needed.
To come to the point, I have scoured the 1841 census (Englands earliest) for every Soden it contains, hoping to be able to see some relationships between them. This work of separating out the settled families from the itinerant canal & railway families and then tracing their roots is ongoing and will probably take up my spare time for the rest of my life. I have noted John & Hannah Soden and the 8 children I know of. John was a Coal carter, living close to the Oxford canal which was built in the 1770s and improved in the 1790s. The Oxford canal was an important trade route for coal from the Warwickshire coalfields, & John would certainly have bought the coal he traded in at a wharf on the canal. My guess (sadly it is still a guess at present) is that John is the son of one of the Sodens who helped build the canal.
From the scatter pattern along the canal network which shows up from the 1840 census, it appears that the canal builders would either deposit their offspring at various points along the canal as soon as they became able to earn an independent living, or would set up a family home at some convenient point for their wives and children. Of course some of the sons would follow the fathers and also become canal men. All of these modes of family life encouraged the use of the canals as a means of transport between work and the family. Many of the Sodens took up the predominant trades of the cities fed by the canals, became canal-side innkeepers, or became engaged in canal-related trade. It seems likely that John Soden of Shilton is one of the latter.
Regarding John's wife Hannah Bellfield, I can't tell you much except that the name Bellfield or Belfield does appear on my list of names of Canal & Railway families. In 1841 a 15 year-old Joseph Bellfield, an "excavator" by trade (this is an old term for a canal digger) was resident in a pub in Castle Bromwich with a gang of 4 other excavators. Castle Bromwich is close to canals and railways entering the east of Birmingham, and it's most likely that this gang were working on the railways. Castle Bromwich is about 4 miles to the west of Maxstoke, and about 3 miles southwest of Curdworth on the Birmingham-Fazely canal, where there is another family of Belfields.
I doubt if this information will make your search any easier, but at least it may help you to understand why some of these people are so hard to trace.
Good luck!

Hi Phil,
I am the one who did the World Tree. Yes Herman was my mother's Uncle. I have traced Herman to Va. after he left Canada. I have his death certificate also. Apparently when he moved (about 1934) to Va. he married Helen. He passed away on July 14, 1941 and is buried in Leesburg, Va. It seems he had been treated by a dr. for heart problems for a year before. The certificate gives his birth date as June 22, 1881, but my records show his birth date 1880. This is common record keeping "back then". My Mom (Mary Soden Hoagland) used to go up to Canada to fish with her dad Harold Soden and they would visit Herman and his family. Let me know if you would like a copy of the certificate.
Regards,
Kathleen

Found him in 1841 & 52 UK census but he was married and not with his parents. Had no other info apart from parents names and father was a surgeon.
Am a decendant of Joseph Soden who emigrated from uk in 1852 to Australia. His parents were a Thomas and Elizabeth Soden. On Joseph's marraige certificate, his fathers ocupation is surgeon and wife's father is a master mariner. Joseph was, acording to 1851 census born approx 1818 in Portsea, Hampshire UK, though I am yet to find his birth/baptism to confirm this and his parents. I have been looking at the Kent Soden's as they seem to be a possible match.
Regards Lois

Hello Lois,

Wow, for a long time we had nothing on this family and now all of a sudden bits and pieces are coming through.

If you would like to give me your email address I can forward Thomas Soden's Will to you, together with a claim from Elizabeth for salaries due to him from the Royal Navy at the time of his death.

I also located a Will and a simillar claim from Elizabeth a few years later (in 1857) following the death of John Huntley. Elizabeth Soden was acting on behalf of my great grandfather, Harold, then age 3. She lists herself as his grandmother and guardian, so it seems that Jospeh's sister, Louisa, my great great grandmother had died quite young.

It became quite clear why I had trouble locating them, they weren't there to be found.

Regards,
Karen

Re: Jack E. Soden, b. 1880, Brockings County, SD > MN > IA > MT - Bio

I only have the information contained in the biography, which I can e-mail to you if I had your e-mail address. This is a synopsis of the information the biography contains about Jack E. Soden's parents:
The father, Francis Soden, was born 25 Dec 1845, Rockford, IL, and died in 1917. Mother, Julia Finch, was born 8 Sep 1848, Philadelphia, PA, and died in 1916. They were married in Brooklyn, NY, and had eleven children, nine living, with Jack Soden being sixth in order of birth.

Frank Soden enlisted in the Union Army at Springfield, IL, as a member of Company H, 119th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, in 1861, and was involved in numerous battles and skirmishes. He was wounded in his right thigh and cited for bravery by his superior officer. After spending about 3 months in the hospital to recover from his wound, he rejoined his regiment until the close of the war. He never fully recovered from the wound and suffered from his disability for the remainder of his life.

In 1870, Frank Soden came to homestead at Kingsbury county, SD, (before the division of Dakota), but later moved to Brockings County, SD, took up a tree claim, pre-empted land and farmed until within three years of his death, when increasing disability resulting from his old wound forced him to retire.

He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Like so many of the old soldiers he supported the principles of the republican party.

The biography contains no information about the parents/siblings of Frank or Julia Finch. You may have to trace them in Rockford, IL, and Philadelphia, PA.

Logan had one child, a daughter, Helene Logan 11/29/1927 - 01/21/1992. Helene married Col. Clarence H.
Thank you for the fast response. That was a lot of new information I had not seen before. I would like to have the information in the biography if it wouldn't be too much trouble. All help is much appreciated.

Thanks again, Paul
pa2lees@msn.com

Kathleen: I am not the person that entered Herman Soden's name in the World Tree but Herman Floyd John Soden was my grandfather and I have been trying to find out what had happened to him after he left his family in Canada, returning to the States. This Herman possibly is burried in Leesburg Va. Should this be the same person. I would greatly appreciate any information tou may have. Thanks..Phil
