Hi Lori,

Actually I don't think Vinko ever went to Alabama. I believe I have his and Emily's naturalization papers at home somewhere. Did you get the book I sent on the Swan family? How is everything else going?
Take Care,

Kay

Wow! This is great! I had been told that the name was Croatian but no one had any ideas as to where I should look.

All I was able to turn up from census records was that Vinko Soych (don't know if it was mispelled or if he was actually spelling it that way) came into the US in 1914 via Alabama and acquired his citizenship there. He had came with Emily Kotarski, his wife. Records show they came into Michigan through Wayne county, Detroit sometime during 1920.
They claimed Austria as their birthplace.

I know that when I had talked to grandpa Soich (Micheal Soich) before he passed away; he had told me that neither of his parents (Vinko & Emily) would speak of or about where they had come from or anything of their past prior to coming to the US.

Thank you, every little bit helps and gives me new areas to research.

Lori Soich

My mother was a Soic(h). Soic is a popular Croatian name, particularly from the Rieka/Gospic area along the coast. The 'h' was added after arrival in Canada. I was recently in Croatia and tried to track down some relatives, but to no avail, as most family records have been destroyed in the numerous conflicts. My grandfather, Joseph Soic, entered Canada about 1919, and mined for coal in British Columbia and Alberta. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

I have been working on my husbands surname for a couple months now.
The only names I have right now are Vinko Soich (spelled Soych in 1920 MI census)born
in Austria in 1885. He married Emili Kotarski who was also from Austria
They got their citizenship in Alabama in 1914.
I am not familiar with any other spelling variations of this surnames.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
