Re: Solar (Benjamin & Bernard) Family of Cincinnati Ohio

I am posting a Private reply to a question asked about this post:
I am assuming you are contacting me due to the Msg I left on the Solar Surname Board.

There is MUCH confusion on these families. Ancestry originally listed Maggie as Hanby then corrected it to Hanley (or vice versa). I added the Maggie Solar as that is what it should be in 1900 from other records. Maggie is listed as married, but no husband living in the home. The following is what I listed in my Correction to Solar:

Transcription Error

Explanation: There is much confusion on these families. But much certainty. Various members of them lived together in Hamilton County in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 so there is no confusion they belong together. However, what Surname is of Issue for this unique Census Record that doesn't fit numerous records that list all the individuals and their parents. Maggie (actually Margaret) and Bridget had maiden names of Hanley. Their Mother Margaret Powers married a James Hanley sometime in the 1870's and had children Ellen “Nelle” Hanley and Bridget Hanley. Then in 1870's Maggie married Bernard (Benjamin) Solar and had sons William M Solar and Edward R Solar. I do not know for sure who the other son was where the subtotals are written through because he exists in no othe record found, but it is likely Bernard after the Father or Grandfather of the second husband. I do not know why Hanley is used in this original (Err as Hanby) because it should be Solar at least of Maggie, William and Edw.

Also note in 1900 someone could have Easily read the Hanley as Sanley.

I was studying this family because Bridget Hanley's sister Ellen Helen Hanley married Michael Joseph Ryan b.1875, a brother of my Wife's Ancestor Bernard John Ryan b.1878. The Ryan's of Cincinnati are an extremely difficult Surname to research. Margaret "Maggie" Powers (Hanley/Solar)'s mother also was a Mary Ryan from Ireland.

Here is all my notes listed under Maggie's name:

Listed in 1920 and 1930 as Margaret Solar Mother of Ellen Nellie Hanley Ryan.
Address at Death 639 Hawthorne Cincinnati. reported by Nellie Ryan.
1910 Census OH Hamilton, Cincinnati Wd-16, EN-181?, Sheet 2A, p269, 15April 1910, 655?
Solar (Benjamin & Bernard) Family of Cincinnati Ohio

Solar (Benjamin & Bernard) Family of Cincinnati Ohio mid 1800’s to early 1900’s
I’m looking for info on the family of Bernard (Benjamin) Solar b. 16 Jul 1858 Cincinnati OH. He was the son of Benjamin Solar (b.abt.1816.PA d.1858.OH) and Barbara Lambert (b.abt.1817 in Baden/Prussia/Ger and d.aft.1880, prob Cincinnati). The other Children of Benjamin and Barbara were Mary b.1841, Henry b.1843, Lena b.1846, Josephine b.1845, George b.1849, Frances/Frank b.1853.
Benjamin (the one b.1858) was called Benjamin the early years of his life, but used Bernard in the later years. Benjamin married Margaret “Maggie” Powers (Hanley) in the 1880’s. Margaret Powers b. 01 Nov 1854.Can Immigrated to US cir 1870 and somewhere married James Hanley and had at least 1 daughter Ellen “Nelle” Hanley. Margaret then married Benjamin/Bernard Solar in the 1800’s as she had at least 2 children with him, Edward Ross Solar (b. 02 Nov 1890 Cincinnati, d. 15 Sep 1961, and buried in Cincinnati) and William M Solar (b. 31 Oct 1877 Cincinnati, d. 28 Jul 1967 and buried in Cincinnati). Both of these sons lived in NJ & NY areas in the early 1900’s. From the 1910 Census it would appear Margaret had 2 other children by one or the other Husbands. One of them, Bridget, was a daughter of James as she was b.abt.1873 and married a Mr Tighe and had daughter Marie b.abt.1898.IN. Apparently Bernard Solar d. 18 Sep 1827, but records related to Margaret and Bernard are most strange in the early 1900’s.
I am trying to find descendants of the families who might have information related to Margaret. Records show her Mother being Mary Ryan and Father Michael Powers who were both born in Ireland and went to Canada and apparently then to Cincinnati. Daughter Ellen “Nelle” Hanley married Michael Joseph Ryan and several family members of all these families lived together in the early 1900’s in Cincinnati and I am trying to see if there is any evidence of where the Mary Ryan, mother of Margaret, originated from in Ireland.
I know someone is researching this family because of corrected names in Ancestry Census Records.
I, too, would like to know more about Joseph Suarez Solar. The story about him being a stowaway is new to me but makes sense. I hadn't been able to find him on the passenger lists of the Spanish ships, either. He married Tomasa Doncel, dau. of Pedro Doncel and Juana Ximenez. Pedro was a Spanish soldier and Juana was b. in the Canary Isl. She, her sister Maria, and her father, Juan Ximenez, were listed as passengers from the Canary Isl. I found Joseph and Tomasa in the 1850 census of Assumption Parish. I believe that he was in his 70s and listed as having been born in Europe. That census is the only place I have found him, except for the birth records of their children. The Diocese records start out listing him as Joseph Suarez, then change to Joseph Solarz, then Joseph Solar, all in the space of a few years. My husband descends from Joseph and Tomasa through their son Marcelin. Marcelin had a dau. Marcelitte. Marcelitte marr. Rosemond O. Landry and their son was my husband's grandfather. Does anyone know more about Marcelitte? She died young, I found Diocese Record of her death. My husband's grandfather was an orphan by age 10 and grew up in the household of a priest, but we don't know much about him besides that.

My name is Calvin and I am also a descendant 0f Celestin Solar. He was my great great grandfather. The story that was pass down to my family was that Joseph Suarez Solar came from the Canary Islands as a stowaway when he was 15 years old. I checked the passenger list of the seven ships that brought all the familes over and he isn't on the list. I also would like to find information on Joseph.

Joseph Solar (or Suarez) and Tomasa are in the 1850 census of Assumption Parish, LA. I don't have a copy of it, but as I remember, his birthplace is listed as Europe. That leads me to believe he may have been a passenger on one of the ships that came from the Canary Islands in the 1770s or 1780s. He must have been a boy when he arrived. I could not figure out whose child he was when I looked at the passenger lists of those ships because there were several persons of the same name. The Solar name seems to have merely been a French corruption of the Suarez name. My husband is descended from Joseph Suarez and Tomasa Doncel thru their son Marcelino Victorio Solar. If you look at the E. Baton Rouge Diocese records, the Suarez name becomes Solars, then Solar within the records of about 2 generations. So it seems that Suarez, Suares, Solares, Solars, Solarz, Solar, and Soulard are all the same name just because the French speaking Acadians had trouble pronouncing and then spelling Suarez. I don't live in Louisiana so it is hard for me to obtain the public records unless they are on the internet. Good luck!

Hi, Debbie, I found a book that had the passenger lists for the vessels that came from the Canary Islands to Louisiana. The passengers were listed with only one surname, such as Suarez, not Suarez y Solar, as in the formal Spanish system. I have read in other books that the double name system was frequently ignored, especially for the lower classes, which the soldiers and their families would be considered to be. Tomasa Doncel's mother was listed as Juana Ximenes(or Ximenez, can't remember which). Juana's father was listed as Juan Ximenes(z?). There was a sister, Maria, but the mother was not listed, so she must have either been dead or decided not to come. Too bad they didn't keep better written records in those days, but no doubt they were having too much trouble just staying alive to worry about the niceties of paper work! If you ever find Jose(ph), please post it on the message board so we can all update our family information! Best wishes, Joanne

My name is Stephen Solar, and my great grandfather, Francis Xavier Solar, came to the United States from Saint Ghotthard, Hungary, in 1904, through Ellis Island. He lived in Allentown, PA for all of his life, and had five children: Leo, Edward, Elsie, Sophie and Pauline. My grandfather, Edward Solar, was drafted into the army in WW II and was stationed at Madison Barracks, where he met my grandmother, Lola Hobert. They married and resided in Allentown, PA for a while, and then moved back to her hometown of Watertown, NY later on. There they had my aunt and father, Phyllis and Thomas Solar. I was born in 1967 to Thomas Solar in Watertown New York. Please let me know if anybody has any information abou this line. I suspect that my great grandfather, Francis, changed his name before citizenship. The only thing I know is that HIS father's name was Stephen Solar (eerie, isn't it?). Anyway, thanks for any info.

I am researching Carrie Solar, M: Anton Donnersberger 1820 to 1830. He immigrated in 1820 from Moravia to New Orleans but was in Cincinnati, (Hamilton County) by 1830. 1 daughter's death cert lists mother as Carrie Solar. The rest of the children are of Eva Zoller. I assumed Anton married Carrie in New Orleans but that could be wrong as he transported "exotic fruits" from New Orleans to Cincinnati until he moved to Ohio. Does any of this tie in with your Solar?

Hi Joanne,

You've got a point. I haven't seen double last names used either. So as you stated, the name Solar is more than likely a corrupt version of the name Suarez.

If I ever find the names of Jose's parents, I will definitely share it with this forum. Thanks for being so helpful.

Debbie

Re: Solars from Louisiana

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for your reply.

On one of my records, I have "Joseph Suarez Solar" listed. You may be right about "Solar" being a corruption of "Suarez." However, Solar is a Spanish surname; and, in the Spanish naming system, children carry both their parents surnames--the father's surname is listed firs, and the mother's is listed second. So, I've been searching early Louisiana records trying to find any Jose Suarez who has a mother with the surname of "Solar," but I haven't found any yet. In fact, I'm not having any luck with the name "Solar." There is a chance that Jose Suarez Solar came over to Louisiana as a young man without his parents. According to one record I have, it states that Jose and his wife Tomasa were married by a judge and not a priest, so there is no Catholic church record for this marriage as far as I know. Thus, no listing of parents names as the Catholic records do. I requested a marriage record for them from both Ascension and Assumption Parish courthouse records, but there were none. Perhaps, they married in some other parish. However, usually early courthouse records do not list the names of the parents of the bride and groom.

So I'm not sure we'll ever be able to find Jose's parents names. By the way, I'm a descendant of Celestin Solar. His granddaughter Ernestine Rosalie Solar was my great grandmother.

Thanks again for your reply.

Debbie Jones
