My mother is a Soley, and we're descended from a long line of Soleys centering around Herefordshire / Worcestershire / Shropshire in England, back to about 1600. I've not found any other evidence of where they could be from before that date. As far as I know, it's either:

- A Norman name from the place name 'Subligny'
- An Anglo-Saxon name based on a word for 'hill'

As far as I can tell, most British Soleys are focussed around Worcestershire / Herefordshire and a small pocket of London.

Richard

Soleys of Stourbridge

I'm researching the Soleys of Stourbridge, and have reached back as far as Richard Soley, born 1820 in Northeck, Worcestershire. I can't find any reference to this place on the Internet - he married a Gloucestershire girl (Hannah from Kempton) and after that the family settled permanently in Stourbridge. Has anyone else come across the Northeck Soley family in their tree?

Soleys I know

My branch of the Soleys comes from Transcarpathia in what is presently Slovakia. The name on my grandfather's headstone is Andrew Solea, changed to Soley. I am led to understand it was spelled Solej in "the old country."

My grandparents emigrated to Hammond, in Northwest Indiana. They had 9 sons and 4 daughters, so there are a lot of Soleys from this branch of the Soley tree.

George T. Soley

I am doing some research on George T. Soley & Co., a shipowning, ship broking, and shipping agents company of Liverpool, England in the mid- to late- 1800's. I have discovered that George T. Soley married Eliza A (probably Ann) Fisher, daughter of John Fisher (Shipbuilder of Saint John, NB) and Eliza Ann Everett. Apparently they had ten children. Of of these children, another Eliza, married
Robert Kelley Kelley, of Yarmouth, NS and later Liverpool, England.

According to Esther Clark Wright ("Saint John Ships and their Builders") Fisher built four ships which, if I read between the lines correctly, George T. Soley commanded--the first one in 1851. GTS later became a shipowner (some ships owned jointly with his father-in-law) and later moved to Liverpool.

Robert Kelley Kelley (originally from Yarmouth, NS) and Robertson Bell were, I think, the principals of George T. Soley & Co in 1891 when they jointly owned the ship 'Ancaios' (which I am particularly interested in). I assume GTS had died by then, or at least turned over the company to Kelley and Bell. Possibly Robertson had married another of GTS's daughters but I'm only guessing at this.

Can anyone tell me anything about George T. Soley? When and where he was born (Economy, NS?), when and where he died? Whether or not he was a captain?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Ruff

Re: George Soley, b. 1831 in PA

Hi Joyce... I am researching Jane A. Soley b. 1857. She married Nathan Rambo Roberts. She lived and died in the Lower Merion Twnshp., Montgomery County, PA area. I have an old obituary which states:
Jane A. Roberts. Mrs. Jane A., wife of Nathan Roberts of Greenfield Avenue, Ardmore, died last Tuesday, aged 40. She was buried this afternoon at the Lower Merion Baptist Church. Services were held at her late residence by Rev. C. Colby, pastor of the Ardmore Baptist Church. She was a daughter of Mrs. Anna Mary and late George Soley and a sister of Wm. and Nathan Soley of Bryn Mawr. She leaves a husband and eleven children to mourn their loss. One child is married, Mrs. Stern.
Someone hand-wrote that she died Feb. 17, 1903.
Jane A. Roberts is my husbands gr-gr-grandmother. One of her daughters is Deborah Ann Roberts b. 1890; m. Daniel Webster Bullock and d. 1973. Another of Jane's daughters -- referred to in the obit as Mrs. Stern; is Sadie Soley-Stern.

DEAR ALBA,
I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR ANCESTORS SOLEY FROM ENGLAND. MY GGGRANDFATHER CAME TO NEW YORK IN SEPT. 1848 FROM LIVERPOOL. HIS NAME WAS CHARLES J. SOLEY AND HE WAS 26YRS. OLD. HE CAME ALONE AND WAS NOT MARRIED AT THE TIME, AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT I THINK AS HIS WIFES NAME WAS NOT ON THE PASSENGER LIST. THE SHIP HE CAME ON WAS THE RICHARD COBDEN.
I CANNOT GO BACK ANY FURTHER AS OF YET. I DO NOT KNOW IF HE HAD ANY BROTHERS OR SISTERS OR WHERE IN ENGLAND HE CAME FROM.
DO YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION?

Still searching for information on my 2nd great grandfather Henry Clayton Soley. He was married to Emily Crane in Clarke Co., MS on March 1, 1871. I have no birth or death dates for either of them but it is rumored that H. C. Soley was born in Scotland. Their daughter, Emily Melvina Soley, b. August 11, 1881, married Joseph Narve(l) Runnels, b. June 20, 1871. The Runnels and Soley families are still in southern Mississippi in the Hattiesburg and Runnelstown areas. Any information on this family would be appreciated.
