My great mother name was Mary Ellen Solan; she married James Cullina in 1887- Salisbury,CT. USA. Her parents were:

Thomas Solan & Bridget Solan( her maiden surname was Solan as well) married in Co. She came to America to help her daughter Mary Ellen take care of the children. Not sure where she lived after Mary Ellen’s death since my grandfather and his sister Lillian were raised by their older siblings.

They had three children:

A.Mary Ellen Solan born in 1868- married my grandfather James Cullina.; died in 1914

Their children:

Mary Ellen Cullina- 8 December 1886 - 1975

James Cullina- 12 April 1891 - June, 1968

Elizabeth Cullina - 12 June 1892- August 1983

Catharine Cullina- August 1894- July, 1975

Joseph Cullina- 18 August 1903 - 16 July 1981

Lillian Cullina - 1905- 21 August 1966

If we are at all related I can send you information on their children.

B. Martin (1896-1980) - married Mary C.? – per 1930 US Census

Their children

Agnes M- 1918

Rose- 1924(adopted)

3. Richard – (1899- 1960) - Married Margaret- 1909- 1942-

Their children: Joseph R. – 1929-

4. Mary (1902)

5. Frances – (1905)

7. James (1907 -1907)

Agnes Hamilton’s mother Bridget Marks Hamilton took care of the children after their mother’s death in childbirth ( James 1907).Do you have any memories of her or did your father ever speak of his grandmother? I believe she may be the Bridget Hamilton found on the 1930 US Federal Census as living in a nursing home run by the Little Sister’s of the Poor in New Haven? With Martin having died in 1923 and she being unable to read or write; the family probably felt that was best.

C. John – (?- 1940)- never married as best I know.

I'm looking for some Ivers, McNichols, Lavins, Carrolls from Kiltimagh. My grandmother came from Greyfield, her mother was Catherine Ivers, father Martin Carroll. They married in 1866. McNichols and Lavins also are in the family according to an uncle. When I visited many years ago I walked from the Greyfield house to a group of houses off the main road that were said to belong to Lavins and McNichols. My grandmother emigrated to Chicago, southside married James Egan and settled in the Bridgeport neighborhood. About 15 years ago I emailed back and forth with a man named Solon who gave me a good but of history of the area. He said we had relatives in common but we were not related. I had the info on my computer when it crashed and had no backup.

As a member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society, known as His-Gen, I have been accessing their Massachusetts BMD Database. They are gradually putting the images of records online. I am interested in the Solan line as my Grandmother was Annie Solan.

There is a marriage record of Thomas Solan, 26, coachman, living in Brookline, born in Ireland, parents Michael and Mary married on Feb, 19, 1889 by D. E. O'Donovan to Fannie ?Bridget (sounds like a given name) 26, domestic living in Brookline, born in Brookline, parents John and Bridget, (source: Marriage Record, Vol 399, p. 58.

There is also the birth record for Leo Thomas Solan, born in Brookline, June 3, 1892 to Thomas (Ireland) and Frances Miskell, (Brookline) address Roberta Pl, Brookline (Vol 422, P. 452.

These are the only records I have found for thomas and Frances.

Hope this helps.
Marianne

I am trying to find information about a Thomas Solan. He was my grandfather's grandfather. He was born around 1864 in Ireland and came to America around 1880. He lived in Brookline, Mass and was married to a woman named Frances. I believe they were married around 1889. They had at least 3 children : A daughter Mary born1890, a son Leo born 1892, and another daughter Franie born 1895. I believe his fathers name was Michael born in Ireland around 1820 but I'm not sure about this. Looking for any information or even where to look for information.

Solon Evans was born in Mississippi, the youngest child of Moses Evans (Born 1811 SC) and Adaline E. Johnston (Born 1825 Alabama). I know nothing about the naming of this child, except it may be some relative's surname offered as a first name. The Evans Family moved to Live Oak, Suwannee County, Florida soon after the Civil War.

The Solons in my family are also from Kiltimagh in County Mayo. My great-grandmother is Ellen Solon Shannon. I do not know her parents names although I think she might be the daughter of James and Bridget Solon. I have not confirmed that yet. She married Patrick Shannon. They had 8 boys (Tom, Martin, John, Mike, Pat, Jimmy, Tony and Joe) - 7 lived into adulthood and immigrated to Chicago. Joe Shannon is the only one still alive.

There are still Solon relatives in Kiltimagh. JP Solon died within the last few years. He was well into his eighties. I sent a Christmas card to some of the Solon cousins to see if I could find out any additional info without having to travel to Ireland.

Slowly but surely I have been able to find out info. However, I continually run in to roadblocks.

My gg-grandmother is Ellen Solon. She was born 9-23-73 in Kiltimagh. She later married Patrick Shannon.

Her parents were Winifred McEllin and John Solon (born around 1827). They were married in Killedan.

John Solon's parents were Margaret McEllin and Patrick John Solon. They were both supposedly born around 1810. John was born in Killedan and Margaret was born in Greyfield (?).

I would like to fill in the blanks on John Solon's siblings. I also want to find out the parents and siblings of Patrick John Solon. Of course, if anyone has info on McEllin's that would be appreciated as well

Feel free to contact me at smc90@mail.com.

Thanks!

Bob Powers,
I have some information about decendents of some of the Solon family relatives mostly from the Toledo Ohio area if you want it. If so answer this message and I will give you my email address and we can work from there. I have a bunch of cemetary photos (Calvary-Toledo) that could be useful to correct dates that Faustin listed in his Solon site. My great grandmother was Matilda Fournier who married my great grandfather Garrett Johnson. I assume that the Johnson part of Faustins name is from the same family as Garretts. Do you know if anyone has run across any reference to the name "Nieman/n or Neiman/n?" this was my grandmothers maiden name, who died in 1909.
Donald Johnson

I am just responding to your message in isolation and off the cuff. My wife,s family were from the area you discribed and were McEllin,s. Are you aware of a ladies name Bridget or family Molloy. I can obtain further information when I have it at hand if it will help you. My wife will be interested with your information.
Ref.McEllin-Greyfield-Kiltimagh

I now have further information in addition to the vague message before. My wife has a brief family tree of the McEllin's in Greyfield Kiltimagh and that show's that John McEllin had a son Patrick(could be more children?) who married a Bridget McHugh in 1868. They had at least 5 children Thomas(B.1868), Mary(B.1870), Patrick(B.1872), Catherine(B.1874) and Bridget(B.1876) who we believe left Ireland at some stage for England and settled in the area of Golborne Lancashire.
If these link's are positive I can supply you with further information that we know of.
Thomas Solan of Woodford Galway

Recently while researching my Solans from Mayo I came up with a naturalization paper of a Thomas Solan, residing in Brookline, MA in 1893. It states on his papers that he was from Woodford, Galway and came to Boston 20 December 1863.

If this Solan is one you are looking for, contact me for a few more details on the paper.
