Maria Thomas Somers

I am looking for information on Maria Thomas b. 1834 in MD. She married Samuel Somers June 4, 1850 and had Henrietta b. 1850, John H. b. 1854, Samuel S. b. 1855, Emily b. 1857, Sarah b. 1861, Anna M. b. 1862, and Charles b. 1869. All of these dates are approximate since the daughter Emily is my g~g~grandmother and she was born 1860 according to family info. If anyone has information on Maria or any of the family members please pass it on to me. I cannot find parents for either Maria or Samuel her husband b. about 1821. I know they lived in Somerset County, MD. Family gossip has it that Maria is related to Joshua Thomas who was called the "Parson of the Islands" Maria is said to be the daughter of one of Joshua's brothers. Any help or information will be appreciated. Thank You.

Much prefer this form of communication.
Loison

Hi Sally,
I think I have found you at last. My relationship to you is this. My Grandfather was Dr. Howe Alonzo Jones. He would have been first cousin to your father. His mother Elmira C. Wilmot was the daughter of Malcom Wilmot Jr. and sister to your grandmother Florence Wilmot. We are both directly decended from Malcom Wilmot Sr. son of Lemuel Wilmot and Elizabeth Street UELs. I have a lovely family portrait done of the whole family as well as one of your grandparents. Also one of your father's graduation class maybe from high school. SEveral of Gussie. I am going to give you my email lhelmer2@cogeco.ca to contact me. I am going to be in the Moncton area sometime in September. Let me know where you live. Maybe I can drop them off. If you have any missing information regarding the Wilmots maybe I can help you as I know the Wimot/Jones side quite well.Looking forward to hearing from you.By the way, I live in Gerogetown,Ontario.Did you ever get your UEL designation?
Loison Jones Helmer
Hi Loison: I am indeed a descendant of those Moncton Somers. My Somers ancestors were some of the first settlers to arrive in Moncton in 1766. My Wilmot ancestors were UEL's and arrived about 1780. My father was Stuart Minto Somes, his mother, Florence Nightengale Wilmot. I am very interested in any photos and information about my NB people. Regards, Sally

My Somer's folk are listed as Scottish and lived in the Port Elgin, Westmorland County, NB area. Some went to the US while others went to Nova Scotia and BC. There is also a large group of Somer's who were in the Moncton area who were from the US. They were UEL and came to Canada about 1780? I expect Sally's people to be UEL but have not been in contact. If you have any information about Robert Somers who married 2. Lydia Goodwin and 1. Elizabeth Davis, give me a shout. there were many children from these two marriages. My line is from marriage 1 and son John Anderson Somers, b 1834.

I think I may be responding to multiple posts of yours.

I am trying to track down info on the Edmund Walsh who married Marcella Lynch. He is possible brother to our gg-gf William Welch b. abt. 1828 (grave says 1828 but censuses say anywhere from 1816 to 1826; born in Ireland, but lived in Janesville Rock WI from at least 1860 to 1911 when he died; great aunt says his brothers were Edward and the John whose family is buried in Block 39 Mt. Olivet Cemetery Janesville -- William has possible ties to Listowel Co. Kerry Ireland as our DNA matches a Walsh there whose family has been there at least 3 generations).

I find Edmund and Marcella in the following censuses:

1860 Beloit Rock WI
Edmund Welch (or Welsh) 32 b.

I am a descendant of Capt John Somers who lived in Caswell Co, NC after his service in Rev War. All my info indicates he was from Warrickshire, England. I have not been able to determine his port of entry to the Colonies because he was an English citizen. He was married to Catherine Arden. According to the application for DAR by Annie Somers Gilchrist filed 1895, John's parents in England were George Somers and Jane Sutherland, Gparents Jacob Somers & Anne McGregor. If your line of Somers was from Warrickshire, we may be related.

I find your message quite interesting. You seem to have found the right family names in England. I have traced my line to Capt John Somers who lived in Caswell Co, NC after the Rev War. I have a copy of his will that I saw in the NC State Archives a few years ago, I also have visited the Court HouseCapitol of the County in Yanceville, NC. John had a brother James that fits the info you gave. Another interesting fact is the info you have about Bermuda.
James had a daurhter, Annie Somers Gilchrist, a writer. We bought or borrowed her books thru our public library. One of her books, "Katherine Somerville or The South Before and After the Civil War" is really a biograpy of her life but written as a novel. I could read thru it and know who she was referring to in many cases. I found her DAR (Daughters of the Revelutionary War)application in the library and got a copy. She mentions the Sir Geroge Somers and nephew Capt Matthews Somers involvement in Bermuda. Thanks, Betty

CAPT RICHARD SOMERS WATTS - ENGLAND - ALLEN LINE

My family originated in England and I have been attempting to find out some information about my great great grandfather Richard Somers Watts who was born in Bristol in 1831. He was a Master Mariner and captained
ships in the Allen Line. {I wouldlike to add that he captained ships in the Allen Line that was bought out by Canadian Shipping back in 1904 or thereabouts.) He married Isabella Watson in Scotland andlived in
Toxteth Park, Derbyshire born by the census of 1861, 1871, 1881. He had 4 children that I know of - Richard, Frederick, Henry, and Isabella. I am directly descended from Frederick. His son Edgar was my grandfather and grandson Edgar Brian is my father. I have hit the proverbial brick wall regarding Richard Somers and only have details about his ships ,marriage details on IGI, AND THE CENSUS. I have some information about his son Frederick Gibson Watts 1861 - 1926, [ who I was named after].

I have noticed that a researcher WAS looking into the Watts family and that her name is Blanche Somers. I find that more than a coincidence given that Richard's middle name was Somers. She had been going throught the DERBYSHIRE uk RECORDS {WIRKSWORTH} and John Palmer has assisted with these details.

As I am unsure which way to proceed, would you please assist me by providing any information or help regarding this. Even if you were able to convey my email details to Blanche if she is known to you [ or even pass this email over to her], I would be very greatful. I am hoping that this may be the break in the ''brick wall'' that I have been searching for.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO RE BLANCHE SOMERS, OR WATTS / SOMERS THAT WERE INVOLVED WITH THE ALLEN LINE, OR IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ASSIST , again I would be very greatful. i may even have some info to supply.
William Somers, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

I am looking for information on William Somers. He was born in England, but emigrated to Nova Scotia Canada, in the early 1800's to work in the coal mines of Cape Breton. He was the son of Samuel and Ella/Ellsa?? Somers. He was married to Mary Pero/Pearo/Pierro/Perrault. There were four children as a result of this marriage -- Albert William Somers (b 1861), Margaret Somers (b 1867), Mary Somers (b 1869), and John (Jack) Somers (b 1871). This may have been William's second marriage. I am interested in knowing where he was born in England, and any information on his parents, Samuel Somers and Ella/Ellsa Somers.

Correction - I made an error when I named the woman in the 1850 Census in the household with the Somers individuals. She was NOT Charity Waitman. She WAS Charity Somers. I wonder if she is a widow of Waitman Somers.

Carol Sullivan

I am looking for info to connect Waitman T Somers of Champaign Co, IL to Waitman Somers of Surrey Co, NC.
Waitman T was born in NC and tales in the family say that his father was Waitman Summers (Somers).
Waitman T Somers married Mary Young of Ohio and they wound up in Champaign Co, IL. He died there in the 1860s and the widow and the children stayed there.
I have found 2 Waitman Somers (Summers) in the marriage records from Surrey Co, NC. One married a Winnie Durham in 1811 and the other married a Charity Franklin in 1834. Does anyone know if these two men are the same person?
My Waitman T is in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses of Champaign Co, IL with a wife Mary and young children. This fits with the info I have for them, but I have not found an older Waitman Somers who could be his father.
Somewhere I read that a Waitman Somers went on to Missouri and died there.
There IS a Charity Waitman in the 1850 Census in Champaign Co, IL in a household with a mixture of Somers individuals whom I believe could be her children and possibly Waitman's from an earlier marriage. Charity has the notation (widow) after her name.
Living only a few houses away is a James L Somers, wife Rosanna, and kids. This man has a biographical sketch in a county history of Champaign Co, IL which states that his father was Waitman Somers and that his mother was Caroline Durham who died in NC. It also states that the father came to Champaign Co in 1841. There is no further mention of Waitman, except further over in the book in a listing of "Old Settlers" who have since removed or died.
I have only recently started on the Somers line in Champaign Co, IL and I'm wondering if anyone knows if my speculation of a connection between Waitman T Somers and the Waitman Somers who married Winnie (?Caroline) Durham is correct. If so, did that same Waitman later on marry Charity Franklin, and she is the widow in the 1850 Census, or is this a completely different Waitman Somers?
