Hi,

Thanks for the post!!! Gdansk is very close to the area I am researching and the given names are similar to those in my tree but no matches however that I can see. Somehow, I think these West Prussian Sommerfeld's from Gdansk/Danzig and Marienberg are all somehow related. No common link yet!!!! :-))

Grant

I have just four Sommerfeld/Sommerfelt in my tree, from Germany, but not as early as what you seek. However, there may be something of interest in my data. You can check out what I have at: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d... I am not sure how close Gdansk is to the region of Prussia where they originated.

Use the INDEX to find the "S" category of surnames in my tree, and then they are easy to find. If there is any possible link between them and your Sommerfelds, I would love to hear back from you.
I am not sure if we have the same family but here goes. Ernest Sommerfeld, a policeman during the 1950's, had a son Pete. He and his wife Esther also had Alvin,Bob and Dorothy. Ernie had been married here in Chippewa County to Louise Klatt. She died in 1929 leaving 3 children. Ernie was born 1898 but I do not know the ages of the other children. If this is what you are looking for I have a lot more information.

Karen,

Not sure if you saw my previous response. So, some further facts. I believe the brother to my great grandfather left Piotrkow (German:Es ist geschrieben "Petrikau.") with his family and headed back to Berlin where part of the ancestral family lived. I have other facts. Specifically:
Great grand uncle: Ludwig Sommerfeld * 8.Nov.1850 or 8.Nov.1851; married 17.Oct.1875, Wilhelmine HEIT, whose parents were August HEIT and Karoline HEIT born Karoline BENDER. Much destruction in Berlin during WW2. I was born RUF(F)ENACH, which name hails from Schweitz (Switz.)
Karen, did your Sommerfeld grandfather also come from Berlin? One of my great grandfathers Sommerfeld brothers left Poland and took his family to Berlin, possibly because he already had relatives there. So many of the Berlin Sommerfelds should be related to me.
I agree. Just a case of similar surnames and family names. Too bad. It would have been great to share info.

It is possible, and intriguing to consider, if they came from the same core family line back in Germany. I guess it would be very hard to trace. I don't speak German, so basically am stopped from searching there.

Hi, Pat. I think we may have corresponded before, maybe not. I posted information on Julia Charlotte Sommerfeld and know that she had at least two sisters, Ernestine and Caroline Wilhelmine. My husband is descended from Julia Charlotte and her second husband, Charles Deutschberg Sr. (her first husband was Christian William Layman).

Charles Deutschberg was from Gnadenfeld, Prussia. The Sommerfeld girls were all from that general area, as well, although Caroline claimed to have been born in Berlin. Charles came over on the ship "Eugenie" and that is where he met Julia Charlotte. I have a photo of the ship and documentation on its passage.

Ernestine was married to Michael Leeske.
"My" Caroline was married to Johann Christian Pertzsch and I have no record of a second marriage. Also, the Caroline Wilhelmine Sommerfeld I have was born Nov 27, 1826, which is different from what you have.

I do not have a record of any brothers to these three girls. That does not mean they don't exist, but it seems unlikely that the three girls would have neglected to mention other siblings.

It could be that the given names are simply common ones and our Sommerfelds are different family lines, or it could be that someone has mixed up these family lines. It is easy enough to mix things up when you are researching something from almost 200 years ago!

I invite you to review my posting, which is supported with documentation including birth and death certs, obits, marriage licenses, etc. I would love to hear more from you about this family, especially if you have any printed sources. Maybe we can help each other.

You will see two groves and the north one has evergreens with three markers. One for Martha, one for Henriatta then when Christopher passed away they put Chirstopher and Henriatta on a nicer headstone. There was a for sale sign on the south grove.

I found a family burial plot with the following
Martha Sommerfeld, Mar 14 1873, Mar 28 1873
Then on the same marker are:
Henriatta Sommerfeld, Apr 2 1843, Nov 20, 1884
Christopher Sommerfeld, Apr 7 1843, Sep 17 1912
There is a third marker and it was sundown. I will try this weekend to manually read that stone. I can tell from the photo that the marker is for a Sommerfeld that died on Nov 20 1884 and born Apr 2? 1843. The first name looks like it ends with two TTs. This is not in my tree. Anyone interested in the pictures? And it just dawned on me that it must be a duplicate marker for Henriatta Sommerfeld. And the farm site appears to be up for sale.

I checked out the cemeteries in Dawson, MN. I passed by the Baxter Church then I realized I could take a shortcut north to the Stay bridge and then past my sister's house. I saw a for sale sign on the south woods. I noticed evergreen trees on the north woods. A patch of evergreen trees is usually a sign of a cemetery. I took a glance down the driveway and saw something four foot tall and square. I backed up and two some photos. Then I spent ten minutes getting klingon burs off my pants and shirt. It was close to sundown so the pics look a little dark.

Re: Wisconsin Sommerfeld

I saw your posting because I set my account to notify me when someone posts to this surname. I have some Sommerfeldt in my husband's background, from Wisconsin. You can review my family tree posting at http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=cal-gal

If you use the "Index" feature, you can select the surname you want to review. There are only four Sommerfelds in my database, from the 1800's in Wisconsin. Three sisters came over from Germany (it was Prussia then) at about the same time. One was my husband's great-grandmother.

The name may be spelled several different ways (even in the same family!), but it is unusual enough that our families may be related at some point. I'm happy to discuss further, by email.

Michael Sommerfeld in Texas

I am still trying to find the earliest documents on Michael Sommerfeld b.1835 in Posen, married Pauline Schultz in Posen, children Emma (about 1865), Fredrich "Fritz" (about 1870), Rudolph (about 1872) and Julius July 24, 1873 born in Posen. Next child Henry was born in Texas in 1877. No luck finding immigration records or anything in Posen thus far. Pauline died in 1889 and Michael married an Emilie Busse in 1891. Emilie apparently had been married to a Rogas and a Schoener previously. Anybody help?

Michele,

You wrote "My Great Grandfather was John (Johann) Sommerfeldt (b: 1845), who married Pauline (Yeske) Sommerfeldt (b: 1854)." I'm wondering if Pauline's surname may have been misinterpreted from the handwritten documents, because I have a Pauline Leeske and a whole family of Leeske that married into these Prussian families of mine before they immigrated to America.

Pauline Leeske was b. Mar 29, 1874, in Friedberg, Brandenberg Province, Prussia. She was married to a William Grossbach, who abandoned her and their children after the family immigrated to the US. It doesn't seem to be the same Pauline, but the similarities are interesting. I just thought I'd put it out there. Pauline's father, Michael Leeske, married Ernestine Sommerfeldt in Friedberg, Prussia, in 1859, and they immigrated to the US in 1885 and lived in Wisconsin.

I am searching for any relatives on the Germany side. My Great Grandfater: Moriss/Morris Sommerfeld was born in 1857 and arrived in NYC/USA on Jul 14, 1875. The ship may have been the Fresia and departed Hamburg, Germany. He was married to Rose and they had one son Max. I have not been able to find a passenger list with all those names.
They may have come from Berlin, but not sure of this. I know if I keep "plugging" away I will find out what city he came from.

Sounds like we are talking about 2 different people.

This Caroline or Carolina Wilhelmina Henriette Sommerfeld was definitely married to Johann Heinrich Gustav Weidenbaum.

They Immigrated to the US from the port of Hamburg, Germany to the port of New Orleans, La, USA on the steamship Germania with their 2 children Augusta born 1866 and Gustauf born 1869. They were all born in Vehlefanz, Brandenburg, Germany from what I have found.

I have a copy of the ship list, and have found the family in 1880 Fayette Co, Tx and 1900 Washington Co, Tx census. The 1880 census shows the parents, children, and Johann's widowed mother living in one household, and his sister Emelie (Amelia) and her husband August Sommerfeld in the household next to theirs, with a Robert Striekert boarding with them). (Another link to August and Caroline being brother and sister.)
The 1900 census shows Johann widowed, living with his daughter Augusta Striekert. Turns out that Augusta married the Robert Striekert that was living with her aunt Emelie (Amelia) in 1880.

So I know I have the right family. But it doesn't look like it is the same as yours.

Thanks
Pat
