Perhaps you can help in finding relatives and/or ancestors of Charles Edward Sommers who died in St. Louis, MO in 1947 and marrued Mathilda Buschman in 1896. He had a heavy Irish brogue and never spoke a word about his past. He was my grandfather.

Re: Sommers/Somers Crisfield, Somerset County, Maryland

Dear Nancy,
My family research is complicated,so I'll try to give you a "nut shell" intro: When I saw this post it definitely got my attention. My gfather: John Wesley Whealton (1872-1920)died when my father John H.Whealton was only a year old. he never knew the man or very much about him. So,obviously I didn't either until I started my research. What I found is rather unusual I think. My gfathers obit states that he was survived by (aside from his wife and children) his mother: Mrs A.E.Somers and three HALF sisters: Mrs.Marian Byrd,Mrs.Thomas Nelson and Mrs.Lee Beasley all of Somerset,Md. It also states that he came to Richmond Va.(were he lived and died) in about 1900 from Crisfield Md. Now, on a recent trip to Crisfield, I came across a Baptism record at Asbury Methodist Church that shows a John Wesley EVANS being born to a John Whealton and Ann Evans in 1872. The record also points out that the couple was not married. This same Ann Evans, later marries(I believe) a Samuel J.Somers hence Mrs.A.E.Somers. Have you seen anything similar in your research? Whealton/Ann or Annie Evans/Somers? Seems like there should be some sort of connection. Any help would be wonderful.
Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

Bill Whealton
Richmond,Va.

Lyman Sommers

I am trying to research my Dad's family - he is the youngest of 12 and doesn't remember his grandfather and grandmother on his Father's side as they were deceased before he was born. He is pretty sure his grandfater's name was Lyman Sommers (abt 1966). Dad's father's name is Fred Warren Sommers (1894-1978). Fred's siblings are Dewey (1900 - ?) / Lillie (1907 - ?) / James Russell (1908 - 1962) / and Mattie Olleene (1917 - 1999). I know that at least Fred was born in Nebraska. I believe that the other children may have been born there as well. If anyone can help me verify that the name Lyman is correct / or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello! I am the daughter of Byron and Anne Brick. The children that you have listed here for Byron and Anne Brick are incorrect. They have four children still living in Washington State, Teresa, Mike, Beverly and Casey. My dad's mother was Genevive (Sommers) Brick and was the daughter of Delia Sommers. She was married to Leo Brick and her brother Wilfred (Uncle Trace) as he was called lived here also. Both are buried at the Cowlitz Mission but for some reason you can't find their names on the registry. Would be interested in sharing more information or finding out more.

You rang a bell in that the Sommers I am looking for...one of Charles Edward Sommers' sons was named Walter...pretty thin thread, but as I said in my post, I know nothing beyond his being Irish but not a first generation immigrant as he had no brogue, very well educated and lived his life after marriage in St. Louis where he died. If you can add to that information, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your response. I know absolutely nothing beyond the fact that he appeared to be classicly educated, was Irish, lived and died in St. Louis, but cannot have been a first generation immigrant in that he spoke without a brogue. Inasmuch as you have been so kind as to offer to help, I wish I knew enough to ask you questions. If I ever get enough information to ask a question, I will send it along. Again let me tell you how very much I appreciate your help.

With best regards, I remain.......Kaaren

I found this message on the message boards. I know it's years later, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. I am Marvin Sommers' grand-daughter. I've just started working on the family tree and this is a branch of the family that I'm finding difficult to track. Any information you have would be helpful. Or, if you were looking for information about descendants, I can try to help.
Lyn

Charles Edward Sommers died in c.1947 in St.Louis leaving no information about family and never revealed any more than his being Irish. He was married to my grandmother Mathilda Buschman. He was a very charismatic handsome redhead. He was great fun! The name would die as his sons had no sons. My mother was a Sommers, therefore, my son is named Sommers Charles Edward Carroll and, except for the redhair, is the spitting image of this greatgrandfather. Any information would be much appreciated. .

There is really not much to do. If a non member posts to the board, you have to approve it before it will be posted.
You can post information to stimulate discussion and lead the the discussions if you want.

The bad part is that you have to deal with Ancestry.com and their archaic software system.

I would encourage you to try it and see if you like it.
Dave Miller

Hi,

I tried emailing you but had the email returned. So will post here hoping you see this. Myrtle Irene (Artzberger)
Sommers was my grandmothers sister. I am at work so I can't be sure it is Myrtle but she was married twice and both times it was to brothers. Betty and Flo her daughters were
the daughters of Henry's brother. After he died Myrtle married Henry and they had Henry, William and Donald. As far
as Myrtle and Henry and his brother much of their time was spent in Pennsylvania. I think the time in Ohio was short and took place after some family members of both sides were a bit concerned over the marriage. When I hear from you I will get the info I have from home.

Cheri

George Sommers killed in tornado

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 12 May 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

STORMS IN TEXAS

St. Louis: A special to the Republic from Dallas, Texas, says:

The tornado in northwest Texas last night killed Mrs. Mary Wagley, her daughter Anna and George Anthony at Moran. A dozen persons were severely but not fatally injured. At Putnam one man was killed and one woman injured. Their names have not yet been learned. A negro cabin was swept into the Brazos River five miles above the Texas & Pacific Railroad crossing and three negroes were drowned.

A wreck train was blown from the railroad track near Crescent and George Sommers and William Apple, negro laborers, were drowned. Twenty houses were wrecked at Moran and half a dozen at Putnam. Hundreds of head of live stock are reported killed in Shackleford and adjoining counties. Crops were badly injured by the wind, rain and hail. Wire service is still badly crippled and reports as to further fatalities are still incomplete, but it is believed that lives were lost in isolated places that will swell the total number to twenty. Railroad property has suffered heavily in the northwest Texas storm area.

A special to the Republic from Houston, Texas says:

Storm news is coming in very slowly, but it is certainly known that there have been many deaths in different parts of the state.

Among the known dead are: Will Perry, of Harrisburg, killed by lightning; Mrs. Allen Dennis, G. W. Mason and child of S. T. Harper at Goldthwait; Luther Rudd, Allen Dennis, Mrs. S. F. Harper and child, and Joe Griffith are also badly hurt at the latter place. Damage to cotton and corn crops will be heavy. The damage to property will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At Ruby, John Mullin’s house was wrecked. Mr. and Mrs. Mullin were carried nearly 100 yards by the wind. Mrs. Mullin is believed to be fatally hurt. Wesley Spurlock, 14 years of age was killed.

At sunset, nearly twenty buildings were wrecked, but no persons fatally hurt.
Have you ran across this line, and any living Sommers (or Brick) family?
Thank you. I am trying very hard to find info re: Delia/Odelia's (and her brother William, my great grandfather) for my Dad....and hope that maybe someone in their family has information or knowledge? They were abandoned by their parents, and ended up living in Devils Lake ND on a farm.
Thanks for anything that maybe you found.
