I am looking for information on Isreal Sonnier. He died at the age of 46 on 25 Nov 1937 in Louisiana, somewhere around Rayne; we think from TB but we're not sure. If anyone has or comes across more information I would love to hear about it.

I have a Philomine St. Pe as the godmother of Marie Martha Dupuis at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in the year 1892 in Breaux Bridge, LA. Martha's grandmother was Louison Sonnier. I have some other Sonnier's, on baptism records that I'm trying to tie together. I believe you mentioned you had a photograph of Philomine and I would like to see it, if you will. I searched the surname St. Pe and didn't realize it was her married name. Now it makes sense, she was a Sonnier. I would like to correspond with you concerning some other Sonnier names and would like to help, if I could. I live in Lafayette Parish, LA.

Please feel free to send an email at tet_breaux@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance,
Brenda

Hello Jerome Sonnier. I have nothing on my Sonnier side. All we know is she was Native American and married Bartheleme Sampy (St. Pe). When she died my Great Grandfather listed her mother as "Unknown". The family says she was very nice, and historical research shows maybe she didn't want to be put on the reservation. Some family members said she had relatives in the Rayne/church point area, but we do not know and the tree.

I will send you a picture.

Remie Sonnier was my father's father.. My dad was Willie Wilford Sonnier, and the first of 9 children that the couple had. My father's brothers were Mayous, Julius, and Ozemie; his sisters were Mattie, Rena, Wedna, Felonius, Essie Mae, and Mary Ann. If the Remi that you are related to had no children, it is still possible that we are related. My grandfather Remie's mother, was married to a Sonnier twice- her first and third marriage. Her first husband, I believe, had children by his first wife.
My family origins are from the Basile/Eunice area, so it is entirely possible that we are related.

Hello, my name is Jerome Sonnier. I am kin to the Sonnier's from the Church Point/Lafayette area. My ggg-grandfather was Aurlien Sonnier(Soigne) and his father was Louis Sonnier(Soigne). I think also that they are related to a Sylvain Sr. and Jr. Is it possible that we have a similar tree? If you would like, we can share trees and see for any common connection. Sisters, Azina Berry, Medora Berry, Mary Berry could be Gladys Marie, and May Berry. Looking for information on my grandfather Famo Barry’s parents and their parents. However, any information on his brothers and sisters is welcome. I have found a thread for Azina Berry married to Simon Trahan, thank you Neris.

Alternate spellings:

Euphemon Berry 1900 Census, Police Jury Ward 3, Vermillion, Louisiana; Roll: T623 585; Page: 24B; Enumeration District: 93. Mother-in-law, Arnelia Frederick.

Femeaux Berry 1930 Census, Grand Lake, Cameron, Louisiana; Roll: 788; Page: 2A; Enumeration District: 4. Father, Joseph Berry. His mother, Laura Sonnier Molitor, d/o Donat Sonnier(1-26-183? to 2-15-1895) and Lucille LaFleur Sonnier. I ahve found info on Donat, but I am not sure if it is the same one. I have not been able to find any information on Lucille. I have no birth or death dates for Lucille. My goal for now is to find out where Donat goes on the tree. I've read lots of messages here about Donat II and III, but I'm not sure if everyone is the same or not. If anyone has any information that they could share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
~~Mikki

My e-mail address is: mscreole@bellsouth.net, I am from Carencro, Louisiana. Here's the information I have on my Great-Great-grandmother Philomene. My famlies oral history says she is Native American and her death certificate says parents "unknown". Family says it was common not to put you were Native American because in their area it was possible they would be sent back to the reservation. So they were hiding their heritage.

Philomene Sonnier (Sognie) Sampey
Philomene Sampy: Born—1869
Died: -- December 15, 1953 (at age 84)
married– Barthelemy (Batime) Sampy (Born: 1860, d: 7/9/1935, age 75, Death Certificate secured)

Dear Shirley,

As I recall, your original message said your Della Comeaux was from New Iberia.

Records of St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Iberia, LA. are in Rev. Donald J. Hebert's "Southwest Louisiana Records". SWLRs begin with the 1750 and end with the year 1909.

I presumed that the Della M. Sonnier, b. 6 Nov. 1900, d. 10 May 1999 was your Della Comeaux who married Sonnier.

In Volume 31, 1900, the only Commeaux with this birth date was Marie Comeaux, b. 9 Nov. 1900, bt. St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Iberia, LA. Her parents names were given as Homer & Theodo. . .no surname for Theodo.

I started looking for other children born to Homer & Theodo... and found one:

Pierre Delaney Comeaux (Omer aka Homer) & Theodora Romero) b. 18 Jan 1896, bt. at St. Peter's in New Iberia.

I am a French-speaking native of Ville Platte, Evangeline Parish, LA and I know that Omer/Homer are the same.

Best regards,
Rosie

Re: Olan(Olin)Sonnier & Nieze(Anaise)Fontenot

Dear Barbara,

Oberlin is in Allen Parish. Allen Parish was created in 1912 from Calcasieu Parish. The fire of 1910 destroyed the court house records and the Catholic church's records. For this reason records are hard to find.

Calcasieu Parish was created in 1840 from St. Landry Parish. Records up to that time can be found in "Southwest Louisiana Records" by Rev. Donald J. Hebert. Fr. Hebert published 41 volumes - 1750-1909.

In addition to abstracting and recording sacramental events from the Catholic churches of the area (Diocese of Lafayette), Fr. Hebert and his volunteers abstracted and recorded civil marriages and successions (estates, wills, etc.) form the area courthouses, regardless of race or creed. This has been extremely helpful. Fr. Hebert knew just what we needed.

Recently, I found a family, living in Calcasieu Parish, who lived in St. Landry Parish when the boundaries were changed. The family had not moved, only the parish lines had!

I looked at the Social Security Death Index at Ancestry.com and found Ezeb Sonnier, b. 25 March 1905, d. August 1973, 70655 Oberlin, Allen, LA

If our ancestors were still alive in the early 1960's when Medicare was implemented, even if they had not paid into the SS fund, they were assigned a SS# so they could collect Medicare benefits. I found a number of birth and death dates on the SSDI that made it easier to find family members. Knowing when and where to look is very important. Always give dates, as well as locations, if known.

I have a large database with lots of Sonniers and Fontenots, but I don't have the ones you are looking for, although, if the truth were known, I may have their ancestors.

Good luck in your research.
Rosie Morein Wells
Birmingham, AL

He married August 17, 1824 in the Opel. Ch., Emelite Francoise Casanueva, d/o Francois Casenueva and Brigitte Bello. They had a son named Donato Sonnier, b. August 09, 1832, in St. Landry Parish. I have no additional information on Donato Sonnier.

What other information do you have on Donato Sonnier III and Tom Sonnier, such as their wives' names, when and where did they lived?
Dear Barbara,

What do you know about Nieze (Anaise) Fontenot? Her name struck a responsive cord, and just a few minutes ago I realized why.

My maternal grandmother, Adelaide Simon Fontenot who m. Arthur Erange Sonnier, had a sister by the name of Marie Anaise Fontenot (Alcide P.S. Fontenot & Emelite Rozas), b. December 26, 1879, (Opel. Ch.) She married Francois Ardoin on Janaury 22, 1878 (Chat. Ch.) and together they had 5 children, the last child was born 1887.

Anaise is not as commonly used as others in the Fontenot family.
Good morning Geri,

Some years ago, I participated in a prostate cancer study that included cases at the VA Hospital in Birmingham. During this study, I became aware that some veterans were covered under Medicare.

My guess is that you should be able to find your relative's birth and death dates on the Social Security Death Index at Ancestry.com - Interactive Search.

If your relative did not live long enough to collect Medicare benefits, go to the Post Office and ask about the Freedom of Information act.
During WW II, the soldiers paid into a military retirement fund or sorts and did not pay Social Security until about 1951, I believe. Therefore, if searching for a veteran's death during or shortly after WW II, how would I search? Is there a way to use the serial number of the particular veteran? Any info will be appreciated.
Geri

Thanks for your kind responses. Actually, I did find my relative thru the National Cem. Assn. It turned out he was buried in the Riverside Natl. Cem. in CA. They were very kind to help me and forwarded my phone number and E-mail address to the surviving relatives, who got in touch with me and we are now once again a united family of friends and relatives.

It was just a shot in the dark that I was able to trace him through the cemetary this way. But, this is the second one I have found by beginning with cemetaries in the general area where I thought they had lived.

Best to all of you who are still searching.
Geri

Hi, Rosie,

I am not sure this is the address, but think you can get there from the following link.
www.interment.net/column/news/ncasos/index.htm

There are several links there and I believe you can find one which will get the info you are looking for. I know I saved this address and believe it was the one I was looking for.

Do you know where the person died? I was pretty sure the soldier I was searching for died in CA and used this info. However, I think they could probably find them from a national roster.

If this doesn't work, let me know and I will look some more. Good luck.
Geri
