It's obvious I haven't been on this site for some time. I believe the Sophe's,Sophy,Soffa,Sauve all derive from three brothers who moved from Brockville Ontario,Canada into Michigan. They moved to different areas and the name was phonetically spelled when recorded.Check for connections at this site and at the Sova family history site in Michigan.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sauve/

I have ties to Grace Sopfe who married William Calligan, Sr. William is my great Uncle, older brother to my Grandfather, Joseph F. Calligan Sr.
Grace was, according to my records, daughter to Fred Sopfe and Martha Erskine and married William on June 29, 1907 in NYC before they moved to Detroit around the end of WW1.
Their son, William Calligan Jr. (born 1926) is still alive and living in Macomb, MI.

SOPFE Name

Although I haven't found a direct connection I do believe the Sopfe name is a variation on the French name Sauve.
I found three brothers came out of Ontario,Canada and moved to different parts of Michigan. The name got spelled three different ways in the different locations. Sauve, Sophy and Soffa. You will also find the name spelled Sova, Sovie,Sovia, Soffea, Sovey and Souve. If you can find one of these variations in old documents you will find your part of a much larger family.
www.geocities/sauvefamilyhistory.com

Our family was from the Detroit area and my father had a stepfather by the name of William Sopfe. My father, age 88, is still alive and living in CA. My father mentioned that he believes that his stepfather had a brother by the name of Fred. My father also had a brother by the name of Frank but Frank only used the Sopfe surname for a short time as he changed his name back to his birth-fathers name when he moved to CA in the 1940's (this Frank had no children while residing in the Detroit area). That is all he recalls. Contact with the stepfather was lost many years ago when William divorced my fathers mother.

The Sopfe name currently is carried on by myself and my wife and three children here in San Diego CA (along with my father-Robert and mother Doris). I have a sister that is married and no longer has the Sopfe name.

Raymond Robert Sopfe

My mother's maiden name is Sopfe. She grew up in Detroit, MI. I do believe her father's name was Frank or Fred Sopfe. Unfortunetly, both of her parents passed away when she was 16. I did not know anyone from the Sopfe side of the family. Please let me know if you know of any Sopfe that come from the Detroit area. I will inform my mother, Sue, when I hear the news.

Thanks,
Connie

Carrie, my father (Robert James Sopfe) had a
stepfather named William George Sopfe.
William had married my dads mother Kathryn
Devine in Utica NY around 1923, and then in
1925 moved back to his home town of Detroit.
In Detriot they moved in with Williams mother
in a large boarding house on Temple and 12th.
William reportedly had 1 brother and 4
sisters, one named Grace. Grace reportedly
married William Calligan(sp?). William had
worked for JF Lumber Company on Gratiot Ave.
In about 1941 William left Kathryn and
remarried and reportedly had 3 children.

Hope this helps..let me know

the Sopfes now in California

Carrie,

I was born in Detriot to Robert James Sopfe
and Doris Louise Sopfe. My father, Robert,
took the name of his stepfather and through
this...he became a Sopfe. My fathers birth
name was McGee. Presently, I am married,
and have 3 children, and of course, all
Sopfe's. My family consists of 2 girls and
one boy, ages 14, 16 and 18. My mother and
father are still alive, and I will ask my
dad the full name of his stepfather, and
will pass that on to you. Other that myself
wife and 3 children and my mother and father,
i know of no other Sopfe's (I have a sister
that is now married and has a new name)

Just to let u know, I am 49 years old.

I know of no Sopfe's in Michigan, but a name
search on the internet shows Sopfe's in
Michigan (a Glenn Sopfe, and others)

I would be happy to hear from you, and also
am curious about the Sopfe's even though I
ended up with the name via my fathers
step-father.

Thanks,
Ray Sopfe
email ...rsopfe@yahoo.com
