Re: Amy Souls-Married Michael Atkinson in Canada

Greta,

Did you find out anything more on Michael Atkinson and Amy Souls? I found their marriage on the Yorkshire Emigration site under Southampton marriages:

Atkinson/Souls 1797 Michael Atkinson, son of John and Frances Atkinson of Maccan, Cumb. Co. and Amy Souls, daughter of Stephen and Rachel Souls of River St. John were married January 3rd 1797.

There is one other entry for Amy's sister:

Clark/Souls 1793 William Clark, son of William and Sarah Clark of Blanford, Dorsetshire, Eng. and Mary Souls, daughter of Stephen and Rachel Souls of River St. John, were married June 8th 1793.

I am especially interested in this Clark/Souls entry, as I believe the Clark could be my line of Clarks. I would love to share.

Regards,

Melinda (Clark) Brasier

redundancy repeating itself.... sorry, my goof
George:

Many apologies, I'd forgotten that I had already identified my Will Souls... very tired, sorry.

That said, I just wanted to add that my grandmother's dad (Ammon Souls) was, if I recall correctly, a successful wool merchant, as one major industry in Gloversville was (you guessed it), the manufacturing and distributing gloves and the like...

Sometimes occupations or hobbies of ancestors can actually narrow things down more easily. With what little research I've done, I've found so many "errors", i.e. names spelled differently, birthdays are off, multible listings for the same person, etc.

It also adds life to the conundrum.

take good care, and sorry for the repetition (again). :)

pax,
marie

Re: Uniting Family Members

Souls seem to be very hard to find! Whenever I do a query/search I come up with "souls" in the spetral sense....

In any case, I have a great, great uncle Will/Bill... but not a Souls... My grandmother, Shirley Souls married George Ellis Banfield in 1933, Gloversville, and Ellis (my grandfather) had one brother, Hugh William Ward Banfield. In fact I just finished transcribing a letter he wrote to his parents during WWII--2 yrs bef he was KIA as a Lieutenant and signalman serving in the British Army. He must have been no more than 19 when killed 1944, so no marriage for him.

On the Souls side, my grandmother was one of two sisters, Shirley and Elise respectively. Dads name was... I'm at a loss...oops! just looked at the back of a family photo--there is an "Uncle Will" (Not Bill) and the photo was taken before my grandmother married, so it is a "Souls" photo. I can scan it and try to attach if you like... this gent looks robust (most of 'em were twigs! Still are <g>) and he is wearing round spectacles... I would guess the year to be 1929 or so from the looks of my grandmother. The man dubbed Uncle Will looks to be in his early 40s?

There are 3 surnames in my Souls line: Platt, Souls and Dyer. I am guessing it came from Ammon Platt Souls (who married Christine Dyer), creating my grandma. There is a high probability that this gent is a William Souls...

More investigating is needed... :)

marie

It was great receiving your note. We definitely have to exchange more info on the lineage line. I did some research last year and found several SOULS members in upstate NY. A common link appears to be an "Uncle Bill" Souls. Mine would be a great-great uncle on my dad's side. He was born Franklin Michael Souls in NYC in 1902.

Let's talk more.
George Souls

My family emigrated from Ireland in the mid 1800's. They lived in the lower East Side of New York into the 1900's. If anyone with our surname has info or photos from this period, please contact me. We are planning a family reunion this summer, and would like to hear from you. Thanks, and send us a reply.

PARTY - September 2000. Place TBA.

I have been diligently working on the SOULS family geneology with my new computer and ancestry.com. I found SOULS names all over America. If any get this message, please reply. My email is georgesouls@cs.com. We may have a party in September to discuss our mutual discoveries, and plan searches for the future. I just discovered that a "Stephen E. Souls" served in the NY Marine Light Artillery Company during the Civil War, survived the war and returned home. How about that! Can anyone tell us what happened to him next??

No...Sergeant Stephen E. Souls fought for the U.S.A. during the Civil War. He survived and returned home to Albany, NY. I will send you more info when I chronicle the military facts I obtained. Also, and this is really weird, there was a "George W. Souls" from Pennsylvania, who fought and survived Gettysburg and multiple other battles before being mustered out. Wow!
Hello George...

I have been having one heck of a time trying to find info on my Souls ancestry--which is puzzling to me, because I know at one point my great aunt Elise Souls Lee Auer was a member of the DAR, but quit with the Marian Anderson event.

In any case, My relation to the surname Souls is as follows:

My mother's surname is Banfield.
G. Ellis Banfield m. Shirley Souls
Shirley and Elise Souls were sisters, born of:
Christine (Dyer/Dwyer?) and Ammon Platt Souls
Ammon's parents were Helen Jordan and "Grandpa" Souls
(There is also an Uncle William Souls)

Both my grandmother Souls and her husband, my grandfather Banfield (who was born in Yeoville, England) were raised and wed in Gloversville, NY and by the time my mother was 11, (1946), had moved to Poughkeepsie.

Any flickers of recognition? :)

take good care,

marie christine gendron.

PS I do have photos and information.... but also some missing pieces as well.

Mary Souls m. to Walter Leach

This morning whilst trying to find the correct birth, death and marriage information for my one of my great-great-grandfathers and his wife - Walter Leach b. approx 1856 Gloucester area, England and Harriet Dyer b. approx 1962 also in the Gloucester area, England, I came across information in the 1881 census and in marriage records that leads me to believe that Walter was married once already before he married Harriet. He married Harriet in 1889 but it seems that he married Mary Souls 10 years before in 1879 and had had 2 daughters with her called Beatrice M. Leach and Harriet E. Leach. Does anyone have this Mary Souls in their family tree? I would be most grateful if someone does because it would greatly help me in establishing which information that I find belongs to My great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmother rather than himself and his first wife. Please don't hesitate to email me if you can help.

Amy Souls-Married Michael Atkinson in Canada

Amy and Michael are my 4th great grandparents and I have
no information about them except that Michael was born in
1771 in England and Amy was born about 1772. They married
in Maccan, Cumberland Co., Canada (there were many other
Atkinsons in Canada at that time but many of them emigrated
to the New London area of Connecticut and I believe that is
where they may have moved. They had 12 children and I
would be happy to share that information with anyone who is
interested. If you can help me I would much appreciate it.
Greta
