Dan,

You say you "will not stop until the truth of William Southard the greatest decoy carver of his time is made known to the public and Southard family members."

If that's the way you wish to spend your life, that is your privilege. However, this message board is for SOUTHARD GENEALOGY! I wish you would take your argument about ducks to an art exhibit or craft show.

If you can share about the parents, siblings, spouse, or children of William Southard, then post that material on this message board.

Lura

Jamie, Here's the real story. Bud Ward, Bob Gerard and George Combs got together and together came up with a plan for the Southard bodies that Bud Ward found. These crafty carvers designed their own version of how a Southard head might look. Now, along came an unknown, me, and accidently came across a real Southard merganser that had it's own original head. The problem now was that these manufactured decoys were already in the hands of well off collectors. The plight was now what to do about the real thing. Sorry, Jamie but the truth is out. Tim Sieger bought one from Bob Gerard. One is in the Wildfowler book by Joe Engers. And not one of you has confronted me personally to scientifically put this to rest because you can't. It would bring out the fraud and make a mockery of the decoy business. Dan

If you pullup (Long Island Decoy Forum)"The Names"you will find much of the "southard" myth.there are many William Southards. None can be linked to the decoy said to have been made by him. The J.is first found in "Gunners Paradise" 1979 page 27" William J. Southard of Bellmore." the use of the "Name"W.Southard decoy maker was a fabrication thus the question of which William Southard did not make the decoys is not relevent. They were not made by a William Southard no evidence exsistes to support that attribution.

( No William Southard can be found from that town)The Mis- Attribution of the decoys was fabricated by 3 Long Island Collectors.Undoutedly members of the Southard Family made decoys but the ones refered to as William Southard's can not be attached to any member of the Southard Family.

I don't know about the decoys carved by William Southard, but I do know that the skill/tradition of carving ducks has continued in the Southard family on Long Island.

In 2000 my daughter took her family to Hempstead, Long Island, NY to see the home Thomas Southard built there for his family in 1655. She had searched on the internet and found the location listed in the History of Hempstead, Long Island. There was a historical marker not far away and a brass plaque on the side of the house. Siding and more rooms had been added to the two room log house with a loft.

As they stood on the side walk looking at the house, the resident of the home came out to talk with them. My daughter was astonished to learn that descendants of Thomas Southard have continuously occupied the home since 1655. The lady living there in 2000 was the widow of the Southard descendant, and she was afraid her son might not want to occupy the house after she died.

The owner invited my daughter's family inside for a visit and to show some of the original logs and the fireplace. As they started to depart, the owner handed my daughter a decoy carved and painted by her husband as a gift for taking time to tell her about the Southard research on the internet. She said the decoy making was a skill passed down in the Southard family.

Below is a picture of the duck being held by my granddaughter. If I can attach more than one picture I will also include the picture of the house and the historical marker.

Lura Southard

Have you checked the book, Early Southards of New York and New Jersey By Ralph Kimball Potter? You can probably find a copy on WorldCat and borrow it through interlibrary loan. A Samuel Southard was governor of NJ during that time period. This Samuel descends from the immigrant, Thomas Southard b 1615 in Leiden, d. New Amsterdam (New York). I have quite a lot of information about him and his wife's family at www.doriswheeler.org.

Doris

Re: Southards in Exeter, Devon

Thank you so much for sending this information. Researching this family in Exeter will help a lot of us.

I would very much like to have whatever information anyone could share about any early Southards of Southern England, especially Devon. I have a theory that my husband's ancestor came from this area. I want to gather any information I can find that someday will help me establish that fact or prove it incorrect.

I think that Thomas SOUTHARD, or his parents, left Devon and went to Leyden, Holland in the early 1600's - perhaps with religious pilgrims. Then Thomas came to New Amsterdam (NY) and married there in 1650.

I would like to find who in Devon made the trip to Leyden (if indeed they did) and then learn if there are members of that family still living in Devon. It will require finding the Southards living in Devon in 1600 to 1650 in order to see if I can make a connection to our Thomas. It would be great to make contact with them if family still lives there. My husband is now deceased, but both my children would like to learn if they have SOUTHARD relatives in England.

You may write to me directly at luraj@triad.rr.com but I am sure there are others researching the Southard family who would be delighted for you to post here on the message board any census or church records you may have - or any other
information regarding birth, death, marriage, etc. We living in the US would have difficulty finding these records from England.

Is this a correct outline of the family?
{I now have attempted to add information from the letter of Joanna.}

1. Robert Southard of Exeter
+ Charlotte Dare, married mid 1800's
2. John Southard
+ Elizabeth Wheaton, born 1870, married 1902 in Exeter
3. Dorothea Marcia M. (or Charlotte?) Southard,
born 1904
+ Walter Narramore, married 1926
3. Edgar Jack Thomas Southard,
born November 14, 1906, died 1983
+ Florence Jarlett
4. Harold Southard
4. Margaret Southard
4. Cynthia Southard

Now would it be possible to learn the parents of Robert Southard?

Thanks to both of you,
Lura SOUTHARD

Hello, I think we might be third cousins once removed. I don't have any information on the Southards but I do have some on Thomas and Augusta Waldron. Their daughter Susan Mary Waldron, is a few lines below your grandfather in the 1900 census, married to Adrian Cooper. Their daughter Blanche Elizabeth Cooper was my great-grandmother.

Thomas F. Waldron and Augusta Gerrish were married in 1866. I've found Augusta in the 1860 census and Thomas in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. I would love to exchange information on them if you are interested. I am especially interested in Thomas's mother Statira and in a rumor about our family's nationalities.

Mike

His death cert says his mothers maiden name was "Southard" no first names for his parents, just both born in NY.

If someone could do a record search for "Wilcox" m. "Southard" before 1813 NY or find a birth record for Seth I would appreciate any help at this point.

Thanks in advance

Hi Lura,

Not sure how far back my father's gotten with Southards (he's doing most of the research) but they do seem to be very localized to Exeter. So it's probably a good bet that your husband's Southard ancestors came from that area. There are certainly Southards there still.

I"m going to pass on this info to my dad and see if he has anything to add.

Joanna

Edgar married Florence Jarlett; they had 3 children: Harold, Margaret (my mother) and Cynthia.

Not sure what info my parents have - but yes, if you could send the info you have that would be great, thanks!

My email is jreading@sympatico.ca.

We live in Canada (Ontario).
Do you have any other info on this line. I am connected through Oliver's second son Claude Irving, who was my great grandfather. I have info on Claude and some on Oliver, but very little on Oliver's other children. Any info you can share would be great, and you are welcome to anything I have.
