Hi, been there many times - Soward Family settled early in Hardin Co. Robert Soward and I believe his wife was a Huford. Listing of all graves in Hardin county, including this one was completed in the 1980s.

Seeking the maiden names for three female ancestors in my Soward/Seward/Seaward lineage. Henry Soward, born in 1779, probably in Anson County, North Carolina, married Mary _?_ who was born in North Carolina in 1778. What was her maiden name? They lived in Rutherford County, North Carolina, from about 1803 until about 1813 when they migrated to Knox County, Tennessee. Some researchers have claimed that Mary's maiden name was Walker or West but there is no proof to substantiate the claim. This premise probably resulted from the fact that Henry and Mary had a son named West Walker Soward. There was a Baptist minister named West Walker in Knox County, Tennessee, and I believe that West Walker Soward was named for him. Henry Soward was also a Baptist minister. Henry died in Roane County, Tennessee, in 1839. His widow Mary is on the 1850 census of Knox County, Tennessee. When did she die and where are they buried? Henry's father was William Soward and I am searching for the maiden name of his William's wife Nancy. Nancy was born about 1752, probably in Maryland. They migrated from Queen Anne's County, Maryland, to North Carolina in 1774. Again, there are researchers who have seemingly ASSIGNED a surname for Nancy without any proof whatsoever. That surname is Harris and I have no idea how this assumption came about. In Maryland there was a William Soward/Seward who married a Nancy Harris but that was in 1811 long ater our William had died. Our William died about 1780-1788. No Revolutionary War service has been found for him. His widow Nancy married John Liles of Anson County, North Carolina. John and Nancy also migrated from Rutherford County, North Carolina, to East Tennessee. William's grandfather, Thomas Seward/Soward/Seaward was born in Kent County, Maryland, in 1684. He was married first to Susannah and second to Rebecca and I want to find the maiden names of both Susannah, from whom I descend, and Rebecca. I began researching the Soward family as a teenager and have been involed in genealogy for over forty years.

Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) Soward

I am hoping that someone can help me with a family mystery. In about 1893/4, my great grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) SOWARD (daughter of J L Soward and Martha A Goodwin) returned to KS with an infant, my grandfather, Olaf Selby SOWARD. She told several stories about my grandfather's birth, but the only consistent information was that his father was John Selby, referred to as Prof. Selby in letters. Mollie had been with a theatre group in St. Louis and stumping for women's rights for a couple of years before returning to KS. Prof. Selby had been one of her teachers, we believe, when she trained for her teaching certificate in Fort Scott, KS.

Mollie also claimed that my grandfather was born in St. Louis County, MO and that his father named him Olaf. I can find no records of his birth.

John Selby supported them by sending money and gifts for about 10-15 years, until Mollie's mother died. He may have been in OK for part of that time.

The last letter I have that refers to him states that Prof. Selby was planning on studying law at Washington.

One story Mollie told was that she lived in the same boarding house with John Selby and his wife in St. Louis, that John's wife died in childbirth, and he gave the baby to Mollie to raise. My grandfather looked exactly like Mollie and she refused to talk about John Selby the rest of her life. My guess is that my grandfather was either born out of wedlock or that she and John Selby married and divorced. Mollie's brother, Frank Morton Soward, blackmailed Mollie for the rest of his life, threatening to tell everyone that my grandfather was illegitimate.

In the 1930s, my mother remembers a photograph in one of the Kansas City papers of a man named John Selby standing in front of some heavy equipment, blocking its passage into a Native American reservation, but she does not remember where the picture was taken. She remembers it because her parents had an unusual argument about whether or not my grandfather should contact him. That was when my grandfather made my grandmother and the children swear they would never try to trace his lineage. There was a lot of animosity on the parts of Olaf and Mollie regarding John. On the other hand, Olaf named his son Selby Soward at Mollie's request.

Mollie taught in Kansas for over 50 years and never married. She lived to be 97 years old. When I was a small child, we would visit her at a Rebekah Lodge Home in western Kansas. The last time I saw her, she grabbed me and said, “Never trust a man and never let a man tell you what to do!” It nearly scared me to death!

Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? ANY help will be greatly appreciated!

I have been working on my husbands line for 20 years and have no luck on tracing his gggrandmothers line. Maybe because of the name changes I have been reading about. I am fairly new to Ancestry.com and I'm hoping I can recieve some help or guidence. Her name was Viola Soward. She was born ca.1868 and died 4/3/1892. She died 9 days after giving birth to her only child, Earl Edward ward. Her husband was Edward Ward. His family was and still is from Vinton Co, Mcarthur, Ohio. Unfortunately no one there knows anything about her since her life was so short. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

I have recently come across a picture of my grandmother's biological father and was wondering if anyone had any information about him. I never knew him, but of course I knew my great grandmother and my grandmother's stepfather who legally adopted her. Her biological father's name is Frank Soward, born about 1901 in Oklahoma. The only record I can find on here was from 1930 when he lived in La Veta, Colorado with my great grandmother Pearl...but her legal first name was Floy. Any information would be great.

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Lyda Soward”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in 1881, and Lydia looks to be about 6 months old. She is wearing a christening dress, and the photo was taken in Xenia (Greene Co.) OH.

I found Lydia in the 1900 census for Spring Valley (Greene Co.) OH, age 20, as daughter of Elisha and Ann Soward.

Thank you for the very interesting information. In response to your inquiry regarding James Soward's place of birth in South Carolina, it was probably in York County which is just across the border from North Carolina. James's father John lived in York County and migrated from there to West Tennessee. I am not sure exactly when but it was probably in the 1820s. I will look up the census records that I have on him when I have a little more time. I believe that the first census he appears on in Tennessee is 1830. Please keep in touch as I am very interested in continuing to exchange information with you.

Just wanted to say "Hello". I also am a great grandchild of DeWitt Talmage Soward. Dale Talmage Soward was my grandfather. I started my genealogy just over a year ago, but have not done much on this line yet.

Hi,
No, I am not a descendant of John or James Soward of West Tennessee but they were related to my family. John Soward was a son of Absalom Soward who migrated from Queen Anne's County, Maryland, to Anson County, North Carolina, in the late 1700s. Absalom received a land grant in Anson County in 1783. He was a brother of my ancestor William Soward who also migrated to Anson County, North Carolina, from Queen Anne's County, Maryland. Unfortunately, I do not have any records of the slaves of John and/or James. You might try to locate a copy of John's will from Lauderdale County, Tennessee. It might mention the names of the slaves. Good luck and let me know if you find anything.

I don't have the answer you are seeking about your father but I do know that there were several African American Soward families living in West Tennessee in the counties of Gibson, Lauderdale, and Dyer at one time. They apparently were descendants of slaves who were owned by the family of John Soward and his son James Soward. Good luck in your search.

I am glad to hear from you. I know many of the descendants of Dewitt Talmage Soward. I have seen no proof that Mary wife of Henry Soward was a Walker. That information has been posted by unreliable, amatuer genealogists. I have been researching the Soward family since I was a teenager more than thirty years ago. Mary's maiden name is one of my "brick walls." Likewise there is no proof that she died in 1850. She is listed on the 1850 Census of Knox County, Tennessee, so we can only say that she died sometime after the 1850 census and before the 1860 census. Yes, I would be very interested in the photographs that you scanned. Could you possible provide a list? I will be happy to share the information that I have found. My great grandfather, John Wamac Soward, was a younger brother of your great great grandfather, William West Soward.

I've looked for other African American Soward's and I've never found one. And most people I come in contact with are just as shocked to hear of a African American Soward. I would like to find my dad. I have just started my Soward family research, and I am trying to gather information and or leads on an Amelia Soward.
I believe a Amelia Soward was born about 1825 in Ohio. She married John West; he was born about 1817 in Ohio. There is a possibility that Amelia and John are from Madison County, Ohio.
Amelia and John had the following chldren: William; Aaron; Rosanna; Margaret; and Mary.
John may have died in 1860 or ealier.
Amelia may have moved to Illinois and remarried.

Hi - I am a descendent of Dewitt Talmage Soward. I have Mary Soward's maiden name as Walker. However, I am just getting started on pulling evidence together as I have been working with photographs and am just returning to the documentation. I also have death as 1850, Knox County Tennessee -- again -- no firm evidence, but you might try this name? Just visited Blanchard OK in September and have scanned many pictures in case you are interested in specific individuals in that line (have some photos of siblings/cousins etc. as well.

Hi - Well, We've been working on this for a while, and we've scanned in over 400 pictures from the Soward and Swanson families. I do have 2-3 pictures of William West Soward, and some with Sarah Caroline Hawkins (Is she a sister of the wife of your ancestor? -- going off memory here, and it's been a while). We also have some very, very old pictures in which all the individuals have not yet been identified. There is one photo marked 1907 and a notation that "William West is seated on the front of the wagon" -- not sure of this, doesn't look like the other photos, but he would have been much younger than he was in the other photos I have. There are several other men in this photo, none identified by my grandmother or her siblings (so far -- still working on the index for these photos).

You probably already have this info, but I also found some transcriptions of the Marion (1885-1890) and Independence County (1859/60) Federal Land records (Homestead and Cash Entry Patents recorded before 1908-- several Sowards in those records. Finally, I have photos of multiple Soward tombstones, including West Walker Soward and Matilda Hotchkiss (Yellville, installed 1989 by descendents).

If you can give me an idea of what ancestors you would be interested in, I can look through the index to see what I have, and I will also keep my eyes open as I continue to scan in photos. Family of Virginia/Jane Soward Woods

I am trying information on the family of a Virginia/Jane Sowers born in OH, 23 May 1804. She was the wife of Jeremiah (P.) Woods, married 10 May 1821, in Clermont, OH. They had 9 children, all but the last born in OH. They moved to Weston, Platte Co., MO. by 1840. They had the following children:
william, John S., Jonus, Eliza Jane, Washington T., Sarah Ann, Jeremiah M., Louisa W., and Samuel A. Her husband was born 26 May 1797, Dayton, OH.

hello! i'm going to assume that you are probably a descendant of john or james soward. i'm an african-american and i came across your post on ancestry.com under the soward board.

my grandmother was a descendant of one of those african-american sowards from west tennessee. i have read a few lauderdale county records where slaves of john and james soward have been mentioned. some of the records were helpful in connecting other relatives of my grandmother to her, but i'm really looking for a connection to her grandmother, lucy soward eison. if you have documents regarding the slaves of john or james soward that you would be willing to share, or any advice for me, i would be i would be most appreciative. thanks!

We all have found by now, many ways to spell Seward. I have a Thomas Seward, back to middle 1700, in Virginia , may have come from Maryland. descendants are names Benjamin Seward,William Seward and James Seward. May match Talbot county, Maryland.

Dont know about Soword, but yes, there are Seward of Indian and of Africian blood.For many years the name was pronounced Sword, than in more recent time, it has become pronounced Seward in this area
