I'd like to get a copy of a book that was privately published . The author is Ruth Sowers Owen. I think the title is "A Thousand Doors-The story of Philip Sowers".
Does anyone know where I can get a copy? Please email me at larooh@hotmail.com. Thanks

Hi Lorrie, I've been gone for a while and was just going thru the message board. You mentioned a book about Philip Sowers, do you know which Philip this book is about? I am searching for a Ggrandfather Philip Sowers b. abt. 1826 in Va. In my searching so far I have found three Philip's born around the same time, so I am stumped as to which we are linked to. I didn't know there was a book I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Caralyn

The book's title is "A Thousand Doors-the History of Phillip Sauers and his 14 Children" by Ruth Sowers Owens privately published in 1970.

I have not seen the book, but have references to it from emails I've exchanged with others. This Phillip was born 1734 in Palatine area of Germany. He married Christina Faust. Do you know the parents of your Ggrandfather?

Hi Lorrie, No I don't know the names of his parents, I only know he was born in Va. about 1825, a dear aunt,(his granddaughter) remembered going to Va. as a child and visiting Sowers relatives, but could not recall the place. She pasted away a year ago at the age of 96, but she told me as much as she could remember. I am just stumped on this one. Thank you, Caralyn

The Davidson County Public Library in Lexington, NC has copies of this book in their genealogy room. The person to talk to there is Jeanette Wilson. She may be able to tell you where to obtain a copy. I have a couple of pages from the book including the cover pages but no publisher is listed. The phone number for the library is 336-242-2040.
It does say on the introduction page to send all corrections and additions to Ruth Sowers Owen and gives her address which has probably changed since the printing. I have also researched this line and have some information and quick access to the library.

The book, A Thousand Doors, is available at the Sutro Library in San Francisco. It was copied by the Genealogical Society of Utah in 1978 and is on microfilm. I descend from Phillip (Philupus Sauer) and have access to the book. If you have questions, feel free to contact me. - Rita

Yes, that is a lineage in the book, A Thousand Doors by Ruth Sowers Owen. According to the book, this is your line:

Philipus Sauer (does not mention Johan) arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Two Brothers" in late 1749. After several years he ended up in Rowan County, North Carolina and married Christianna Faust. Their eigth child was Valentine Sowers.

Valentine Sowers was born on December 10, 1768 and married Ann Maria Eva Derr (Darr) on February 14, 1792. Valentine died February 4, 1843. Valentine Sowers (Jr) was their 8th child.

Valentine Sowers (Jr) was born February 20 or 29, 1808. He married Elizabeth Long. He died September 1, 1893. Jacob Matthias Sowers was their 10th child.

Jacob Matthias Sowers was born on April 4, 1851. He married Permelia Sellers and later Martha Ann Allen. He died December 28, 1911. Emma Sowers was the second child of Jacob and Martha.

The book does have a little more detail. If you're interested just let me know and I'll get it to you.
