Re: Spofford-Spafford Genealogy Book

Hi Peggy
You and I are probably distant cousins from what I've read. I was wondering where you got that book and how I might be able to come across one. My gr gr gr grandmother was Rebeca Spafford who was the daughter of Earl Spafford. I am trying to find out the connection between them and the surname Orange-Spafford. 7 generations back from Rebeca was John Spofford (the immigrant from England). Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks for your time, Andrea

My great grandfather, Russell, his wife Cora(Lake), Lillian (Miles/Spafford/Robertson), and Wesley area all buried at Fairview Cemetary in Chicopee, Mass.

She was also known as Annie Gwenfra Parry. Her mother was thought to be Kate Parry before she married Fred Spafford

I knew my maternal grandmother Annie Gwenfra (also known as Nancy) but never knew my real Grandfather. Does anyone know who my mother's father was. I know he came from North Thorsby in Lincolnshire and my mother was brought up in Kirmington.

Dear Lana,
My name is Athena and back in 2008 my daughter, Betsy began a search for any information about Mary and Aurora Spafford.
The reason she began this search may seem weird and odd to you. It still does to me and my daughter. I'll tell you the tale in great detail if you would like to phone me @330-968-6114. It's certainly not your ordinary tale by any measure. Before you pick up the phone and dial, let me pose a question to you. Do you believe in reincarnation? I had memories... let's just say that once I began to investigate, proved to be quite solid. I don't understand to this day WHY or HOW. Anyway, if you wish to talk, call me. It's all there in the Perrysburg cemetary and history books of the first one hundred years of wood County.
I had this experience of "knowing and remembering" back in 1990 something. It's now November, 28, 2008. I still don't know why it happened to me and my daughters. I did say daughters, didn't I? all 3 of my daughters have "memories". It's just weird and embarrassing because I hate for anyone to think we are weird. But, what if we are remembering something that needs to be remembered for some higher purpose? anyway, call me if you like.
Thanks, Athena Harris

I am researching Amos Spafford and Olive Barlow Spafford who resided at Fort Meigs [Perrysburg], Ohio, 1810-1823. I am completing a report on archaeological test excavations and historical investigations of a site that dates ca. 1810-1830 on the floodplain jest west of Fort Meigs, Ohio. The history of the property and analysis of artifacts indicate the site was part of a communit known as Port Miami (1805-1835), Michigan Territory. This site may be the original residence of Amos Spafford, second Collector of Customs and Inspector of the revenue. I would like to add Ancestral data of the Spaffords to this report to be completed for the University of Toledo, Sociology & Anthropology Department, and the Ohio Historical Society, Columbus.

Dear Judy,
I have read some of your articles in The Perrysburg Journal with great interest, particularly the one with my Great Uncle Hill Spafford's picture accompanying it. The article was regarding Aurora Spafford. My father had kept the article for many years and finally copied it (undated) and sent it to me. I am descended from Amos to Aurora to James A. to Lewis Darius Spafford through his daughter, Olive Spafford Raugh, Hill's sister. I am currently doing research on this adventurous family and am very happy to share. I have discovered (and you probably already know this) that Amos Spafford's father-in-law, Nathaniel Barlow, was a Revolutionary War patriot and is recognized by the DAR as being one. I'll bet Amos was involved too. He was only 22 or so when the war began. I've found a few tantalizing snippets, but nothing actually proving his activity as yet. There were, as you know, several Amos Spaffords during this period of our history.
I have also read with great sadness the accidental disinterment of Amos and family members. Any information you can share about this would be gladly received.
Thank you,
Lana

Hi John, Thanks for the info, but I've just made my last trip to that area--or so I think. Went into the Brocklebank Museum; saw the John Spofford stone and plaque, the golf course and clubhouse (bought a cap!) and a few Spofford roads. Thanks also for the Judy Justus contact. 'My' Ohio ancestry is complete, tho I know there are many cousins I'm not aware of. Only data I'm still looking for is the background of Abigail Douglas(s) who married Eliphalet Spafford in Springfield, VT in 1769; I think her father was Samuel and brother Joseph, but not sure.
Hi Sue. Thanks again for the details. I don't know who was buried in the Georgetown area, but here's my line: John Spofford and Elizabeth Scott; John Spofford and Sarah Wheeler; Jonathan Spofford and Jemima Freethe; David Spafford and Hannah Cheney. Eliphalet Spafford was born there but moved to Vermont and married Abigail Douglass.
It would be great if you could send me a photo of the rock or any other cemetery photos you might have. My email address is: calspa@cruzio.com
Thanks, Cal
The "house" that I had mentioned in a previous email is actually The Brocklebank Museum which is located on East Main St. in Georgetown. The photos of this museum and "the rock" were taken on my way home after a photo shoot in the Georgetown, MA cemetaries. I'm wondering if the rock isn't also located in Georgetown. If memory serves me correctly (and I don't trust it now!), early Rowley was split up into several different towns, Georgetown being one of them. This spring, I'm planning on seeing Boxford and maybe Rowley cemetaries. I'm not that far from them. Do you have any ancestors that maybe were buried in present-day Georgetown? If so, let me know and I'll see if I photgraphed their graves. I'll have to go back and hit the libraries and try to get more info about deaths and such, but just doing the gravestones has been very interesting. I love the old cemetaries. If you want me to email you the photo of "the rock" send me an email with your email address and I'll send you a photo so your grandkids will know what to look for. Actually, I had a daughter with me who spotted the rock. It really made my day! It's not right next to the road, so you have to be alert!

Sue

Thank you for the 'rock info', Susan. I'll have to ask my grandkids to look for it, like a treasure hunt, and reward the lucky finder. Please let me know if you come across any more clues, like a street or area.
I haven't searched cemeteries further back than my gggrandfather, also Calvin, who went to Ohio from Vermont about 1830. Can't even find where the two previous generations died; the generations before them lived in the general Rowley area.

There is a rock there with a bronze placque commemorating John Spofford. I almost missed it when I was out photographing family graves. I've gone back 7 generations. I took a picture of this rock and some house. I can't remember what the house was and I can't read the sign on the picture. I'll have to do some research and find out what this house was. The rock is small and easy to miss.

Susan (Spofford) Hodges

Elijah Spafford, son of Moses Spafford and Elizabeth Boice, is the man who married Eliza Jane Cranston, subject of my recent posting to this forum (link below). I am descended from Eliza Jane's father, Walter, but am interested in corresponding with anyone who has researched this particular Spafford line in hopes of corroborating some of what is said of Walter Cranston and family.

My post may be found at:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.spafford/229/mb.ashx

Looking for Descendants of Florence S. Wilkins, Descended from Spaffords of Loughborough or Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario

c. 1947 a Florence S. Wilkins is said to have provided a copy of a Spafford Family Bible to Frank Clark Patterson, who was then researching the family of Walter Cranston and Jane Hill.

Walter Cranston and Jane Hill's children all lived in Loughborough or Kingston Twps., Frontenac County, Ontario, and included Eliza Jane Cranston, said to have been b. 17 Oct. 1817, said to have d. 27 Jun. 1890. Eliza Jane Cranston is said to have married Elijah Spafford, 19 Jun. 1843, and to have had at least 9 children. I do not know through which of these children Florence S. Wilkins descended.

Would like to make contact with any descendant of Florence S. Wilkins, particularly if in possession of the Spafford bible. I descend from Walter Cranston, but not through the Spafford line. I believe the Spafford bible to be the source for much of the information provided above.

You probably know by now that Aurora's wife's name was Mary Rolph Jones. Her birth date is given as 29 Sep 1791. Her daughter's name was Miranda (as you already know). She died in Perrysburt 18 Jan 1879.
LanaLT

Dear Judy,
I am descended from Amos Spafford through Aurora, James Aurora, Lewis Darius and Olive Spafford. I would love to know more about them and see pictures if you have them (even if I'm eight years late!).

LanaLT

Roger,

Please contact me at my email address - pwheeler@gci.net. I have a very extensive spreadsheet that follows our line of Spaffords back to the Spafford Book. Abijah Pratt (#3761 in the Spafford Book) is in the spreadsheet along with his children and the first names of Mary's father and mother. I am more than willing to share it with you.

Paul

Alice Spafford, Chrystle Spafford

I have a postcard photo of a young girl identified as Alice Spofford, back of card has a short note describing her outfit and a Christmas gift, is signed by Chrystle and it was sent to her aunt and uncle, Ernest and Nellie Holford, in Canada.
Chrystle Spafford is listed on 1910 Addy, WA census with John Gardner family. His son Orben, age 21 is married for the first time and within the year to a woman named Alice, apparently married for the second time. She is also shown as having had one child, who was still living. The family has two boarders, one of whom is Chrystle Spafford, age 4. Alice Holford, my grandfather's sister, first married a Charles Spofford in 1904 and secondly an Orben Gardner in 1910.
I think young Alice is Chrystle's daughter. Does anyone have any information to confirm this?
