Re: Edward L. Spahr, 1832-?, Baden > St. Louis, MO

It appears that these are two different Edward Spahrs, both born in 1832. Edward of St. Louis came to America about 1851 at the age of 18. He is found in St. Louis in the census of 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 Veterans Census, and dies before 1900. He was born in the Dutchy of Hesse, mostly living in and around Darmstadt. All the siblings came to America independently as adults. I believe that the L. stood for Louis, but can't say for sure. His mother was an unknown Otto, who died in Hesse when they were young. Sorry that I am not able to help with any info on your Edward.

Who were Edward's parents? Where was he born?

I am looking for Edward Leonard or Leonard Edward Spahr born 10 September 1832 in Biengen, Baden to Johann Baptist Spahr and Barbara Mutterer. This Edward emigrated with his family in 1834. They were in Erie County, PA in 1834, in St. Joseph County, MI in 1840, in St. Joseph County, IN in 1850, and in Elkhart County, IN after 1856.

Edward L. Spahr was my Great Grandfather's brother. Edward's siblings were Frances (Fannie) Spahr Claus or Klaus of St. Louis. Herman Spahr of Ga. & SC, Otto Spahr of Ga. They all came to America between 1850 and 1870. Their father and a sister remained in Frankfurt, Germany.

Bits of Spahr Family Research, including 3 Bibles

Over the past couple of weeks, I have taken a little time out to type up some bits and pieces of my research for various families. Most of those families are ones that I am in closer contact with, which allows me to deal directly with my cousins. However, I have taken the time to type out a few pages relating to my Spahr family as well. Sources for this information is also provided.

Among the items I’ve included are these Family gems:
1]. The Bible for the Hisle, Sphar, and Strode families.
2]. The Family Bible of Peter Spahr and Mary Elisabeth Longsdorff.
3]. And third, a Bible for the Spahr and Ritscher Families.

This information will be freely shared with anyone who might be interested, provided one doesn’t wait too long. All I ask is that you write to me directly as opposed to responding to the message board, and make sure to put “Spahr Family Research” in the subject line of your e-mail. I do not always have time to respond to all the message boards, but I ALWAYS respond to those who write to me directly. If you forget to put “Spahr Family Research” in the subject line, I will likely delete any mail coming from an unknown address!

Craig

MY SPAHR LINEAGE:
Thomas > Thomas, Jr. > Jacob > Jorge > John Ulrich > John Ulrich, Jr. > Edward > John Oliver > Catherine Spahr married William C. Louck.

My Spahr Family is from Pennsylvania and related to the Jacobs family, George W. Jacobs. owner of George W. Jacobs Publishing Company Philadelphia Pennsylvania . George W. Jacobs married Elizabeth Myers. I have learned that Anna Dorothea Jacobs b. 1870 married Gottlieb Spahr b abt 1870. I believe that Anna is the Daughter of Charles F. and Auguste (Busse) Jacobs. Anna has a twin brother Ernst Jacobs. Anna's father died in 1874 and her mother 1885, she would have been 15 years old at the time of her mother death and George W. and Elizabeth Jacobs may have taken some of the younger children into their home. Anna was the sister of my Great Grandmother Bertha Ida Jacobs. George W. Jacobs made a white leather Marrage Ceremony Book For Bertha Ida Jacobs daughter Anna Bertha (Dolly) Strohm for her marriage 1921to Harry Clark.

Would you happen to have information on Elizabeth Spahr (1859-1937) and her family? She was married to Christian Rolli (1847-1918), and lived in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Their children were Clara Rolli (died young), Frankie Edna Rolli (1886-1964), Wilma Alice Rolli (1892-1971), and Donald C. Rolli, (1899-1977). Elizabeth would be my paternal great grandmother. I have pictures of her with large family gatherings, but I don't know any of her family. She is the woman in the back row with light dress in attached picture. Wilma is seated in front in light dress. Can you help?

Joni

Joni,
I am quite sure there were a number of SPAHRs living in Tuscarawas County during that time period. I don't have the information in front of me, but I know there was a GUST SPAHR who lived in Tuscarawas County and either he or his parents were born in Switzerland. I apologize for sending such a hazy answer, but if you can give me a few days, I will check it out for you. I do not believe that the SPAHR family from Tuscarawas County was related to the SPAHR family who resided in Columbiana County and later to Holmes County, which is my family line.
Sincerely
Karen Spahr Shear

SPAHR,SPARR with Greenleaf Smith connections?

I have a grgrgrandmother name of Lettice Sparr or Spahr b. abt 1804 in ?,PA. She married Greenleaf Smith and they had Olive Electra Smith born 19 Nov 1840 in La Fayette, Stark Co., ILL. She married Ira Newton (b. 4 April 1839 in Va.) 1864 in Gala, Henry Co.,ILL. I'd like to add to this seemingly salad of Lettice, Greenleaf and Olive. Appreciate any clues of suggestions. Thank you.
