Not sure how this site works. Tris Speaker was my uncle (great uncle) by marriage to my great aunt, (Mary) Francis Cuddihy. Her brother, William Cudahy, was my grandfather (different spellings for the boys and the girls were immigration glitches).
Aunt Francis, who was never called "Mary" that I know of, prided herself on spelling "Francis" the boys' way instead of "Frances"

I'm interested in this because my great grandmother was a Speaker, and we were always told that we were related to this family. I was also told our branch came from Maryland, but I have yet to make the connection. The earliest Speaker I have is a William Speaker who was born about 1797 and died in Ohio in 1850. Does anyone have any indication of a link?

(My husband is James's grandson.)

Margaret had two daughters and one son: Elizabeth, Leslie, and James.)
Gypsy had one son: Scott.
James had one daughter: Mary. (Mary had my husband.)

Going back, Tristram and his siblings were born to Archie O and Nancy Jane [Poer] Speaker. Archie had a sister, Eleanor Speaker.

Archie and Eleanor Speaker were born to Henry J Speaker and Elizabeth Moore.

Elizabeth Moore was born to Eleanor Allison.

... and this is where my information stops.
Tell was not Tristram's brother. He was his cousin.

William Atell Speaker was the son of Calvin M. Speaker (1849-1915) and his wife Laura Findley (1858-1933). Calvin Speaker (Tell's Father) was the brother of Archie Speaker (Tristram's Father). Calvin and Archie were the sons of Henry & Elizabeth (Moore) Speaker.

William "Tell" Speaker appears with them (Calvin and Laura) on the 1880 census as son Willie. Archie and Nancy had no sons on the 1880 Census.

William Atell Speaker was born about 1875. He died in 1966 in Dallas Co, Texas. He married Martha A. They had 3 children; Mamie (b. abt 1907), Hugh/Huan Calvin (1910-1952) and Fred (b. abt 1912)

Tell was the eldest of 11 children.
Our family has been searching for this information for a very long time. Are you deductions from family records or in records from Bergen County? Could this Wiant name come from the early Weyandt Family (many spellings) that came early to New Amsterdam and settled in Bergen County with some families living on Staten Island? So far we are unable o find the first Speaker Family in Bergen County. Could you help with this? We are from Wyon 1770/1774. We hope you are able to help us. Thank you for your post.

Mrs. Minor, My name is Chapin Murphy, and Horace Roper Murphy was my grandfather. My grandmother Kathryn Gibbons from Great Barrington Massachusetts was married to him during the war. My father Mark Gibbons Murphy was born on August 30, 1949. My grandparents then divorced and we never new anything about my grandfather. The only solid information we had on him was a copy of his death certificate. my father passed away in december of 2005. not from cancer, but he did have a history of cancer. I would love to hear back from you. i do not know any of my grandfathers relatives as my grandmother never would talk about him. i recently found my fathers baby book and it had a listing of my great grandparents from Jasper and Birmingham in Alabama, and they definitly are the name you have mentioned. I hope that this message is still active I see that it was posted in 2000 and it is now 2006. I will do my best to get in contct with you somehow

Marriage: James A. Speaker + Malinda Miles

I came across the following. As my Mom's family came from Glens Falls, this caught my eye. I have no further information on this event or these people.

From the NY Times, Nov. 13, 1895, p. 15

A Matrimonial Bureau Match
--------------------------------------
Pittsburg, Nov. 12;.-A woman and a boy arrived and registered at a hotel at Bolivar Sunday. They closely watched every train. A strange gentleman arrived Monday, and after some skirmishing, he and the lady applied to Squire Johnson to perform a marriage ceremony. Owing to the absence of the necessary license, this could not be done. The papers were secured, however, and this morning the couple were married. They had never met before, their courtship having been conducted through a matrimonial bureau. The bridegroom is James A. Speaker, aged fifty-six, of Buckner, Mo. The bride was Mrs. Malinda Miles, aged forty-four, of Glens Falls, N.Y. They left at noon to-day for the West.

I have not traced these Speakers. The info is:

Frank William Speaker, "Sid," born June 23, 1889 in Pittsburgh, PA. Attended Thaddeus Stevens public school; South high school; Allegheny Business College; and Caton Technical school. Occupation: credit manager W. H. Speaker store.

Charles Lewis Speaker, "Rube," born February 1, 1880 in Pittsburgh. Attended Thadeus Stevens public school and Pittsburgh Academy. Occupation: manager W. H. Speaker store.

I would guess that the two are related since they have the same last name, live in the same area, attended the same school, are in the same club, and work at the same Speaker store.

A lady by the name of Jane Rohrbach was telling us that she bought furniture from a young man a long time ago named Tris Speaker, and it was Tris's son. Was Tris's son named Tris, and was he in a wheelchair. If so, please e-mail me. I'm interested. She also said that she'd give the furniture to us, so it could be in the family.
Thanks!

Dr. Tena Speaker Murphy is the dau of Vent W. Speaker. Her last known address was Little Rock, Arkansaw. She was a Chiropractor there, I believe. Her Aunt Frances Elizabeth Speaker Sparks Babb, lived in our home in St. Louis with her grandson Sydney Yeager Pendleton. We were in contact often during the 1970/80, but I am sure Tena is deceased at this time. I no longer have her address, but maybe this will help with your search. I am interested in information on the Speaker or Rosensteihl line. Anton Speaker was Vent W. Speakers Father and Bertha Rosensteihl was his mother. Do you have any information on these two. Anton was from Wurtenburg, Germany. Thanks jenna Pendleton

Jenna:

I have printed out your requests and will forward them to Tena E. Murphy the great-granddaughter of Vent W. Speaker. I have been searching for information for her. She will contact you with what she has found. If you want to have her contact you send me your mailing address.

I can give you the e-mail addresses of some other family members who are making the same search as you are and they may be able to help you. Tena is a busy cardiologist and the mother of young twins and is not yet working on line so she would have to respond via mail.

Larry Norred has quite a history of the family and can be reached at, norredl@Astralloy.com

L. David Roper has been compiling data on the Roper family for around 40 years and has information about the Roper-Speaker-Greely families. He can be reached at, ropoerld@vt.edu and he has a WWW at http://www.roperld.com.

Allison Roper is also doing a family tree on these families and she lives I believe in Missouri, formerly Alabama.
My great-great aunt was married to Tris' brother. My mother remembers meeting Tris when she was a young child. I am looking for information on Tell ( don't know if this is his real or nickname) and Martha. I know that Tris and Tell's parents were Archie Speaker and Nancy Peer.

Hello Keith, I sent away for his parents birth certs and they were born here, in Fla I believe. I was disappointed because my speaker roots are from Denmark. I still believe him to be related because of his uncanny resemblance to my grandfather. good luck..
