My dad's paternal grandparents, James Wiley(?) Speaks and Amanda Virginia Wells, were married 25 Jul 1880 in Stephens co., TX. I'm aware that his grandmother's family were living in Stephens co. at the time of the 1880 census (Amanda Wells being the daughter of Harvey John Wells and Nancy Louisiana Dukes); but I've been unable to establish to a Speaks family anywhere in the county. James and Amanda had one son, William Wesley Speaks (my paternal grandfather) born 4 Mar 1882 in Hill co., TX. I have no particular information about James W. Speaks other than his having been born in Missouri. Since Amanda remarried about 1890 to Arnold Ritz in Texas (they had a daughter Edna born Nov 1892, married Bob Thomas), I was trying to find out if James and Amanda divorced or whether he died sometime during the 1880s. The one reliable source of this information would probably be the Speaks' family Bible which went with the Thomases when they migrated from New Mexico to Louisiana. I'm not sure where it got to after that. They left New Mexico not to many months after my grandfather (William) died about 1937 and his death should be the last known date recorded in it.
