New Speaks DNA Testing Opportunity

I wanted to do two things relative to DNA and genealogy.

First, there has been a lot of recent interest in the Speaks family in the British Isles. We have run a couple of ads there in various magazines hoping to find family members there who are interested in genealogy.

I want to make sure all of you know that we do have a Speaks DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/speaks where Speaks men (of any surname variant) can test to see which Speaks families they match.

Second, I want to let you know about a new autosomal DNA testing opportunity. You can see the info here on the blog:
http://the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-23andme-auto...

Roberta Estes
Speaks Family DNA Project Administrator (volunteer)
robertajestes@att.net

Hello there:)

I don't have any listing for Jimmie speaks, but there could be a family connection somewhere, as I've learned when researching information on my history. Who is your grandmother?

The locations I have so far of where some of the speaks came from were:

Gantt,Greenville, SC
Charlotte, SC

Thanks for writing a note, you never know there could possibly be a connection.

Yalanda

Re: Dovie Speaks - Married to a Moody

As a child I remember visiting almost every weekend. Great Grandpa Moody slept on the screened in back porch for as long as I can remember. There were no windows or drapes of any kind around the screens. He had a twin bed, a dresser and his shaving gear & mirror on the porch. There was a bathroom in the house, but he always used the outhouse. The story goes that after he and Dovie had Ila, Dovie made him sleep on the porch. He was very quiet and I don't remember him ever saying more than a couple of words to anyone. He was very tall (6'3") and lanky and had a head full of silver hair. He never missed church and always wore a crisp white shirt and suspenders.

Born Mar 24, 1883 (Arkansas)
Died Dec 01, 1978 (Rison, Cleveland County, AR)
Married Dovie Diana I. Speaks on Jun 15, 1902 in Rison, Cleveland County, AR.

I have no information before that, except that Samuel Speaks Sr was born in 1880, but I don't know where he lived, before they moved to Charleston, SC. His Son Samuel Speaks jr, was born in 1898 and was the oldest out of Four children.
Christmas DNA Testing Specials

Hi Cousins,

The DNA testing company that our family project is using is once again offering 6 holiday gift certificates for each surname project. This is a great time to join and be tested or to give testing as a holiday gift.

I can't talk about price on this list, but there are two certificates for a yline (paternal) 25 marker test, two for a 37 marker test and two for mtdna (maternal) testing.

These are not fully paid tests, but will reduce the cost of the test by 10-15%.

Terms of the certificates are:
1) that they be used only for new members (new kits), not upgrades,
2) that they are not valid in conjunction with any other promotion, and
3) that the kit must be ordered *and paid for* by 31 Dec 2007.
Any certificates not used by December 31st will expire, although if the kits are ordered and paid for by the, they don't expire.

You can use the certificate and purchase the kit, even if you haven't decided yet who will use it. The kits have a virtually indefinite shelf-life (until the samples are actually taken), so you could purchase a kit now and use it later.

If you are interested, please contact me offlist and I will send you the link and instructions.

Roberta Estes

Hello!
I am trying to find out about my father and my grandmother.
My grandmother, Molly Ann Mullins, was born in Oklahoma in 1936 to Benjamin Franklin Mullins and Claudia Elizabeth Garrison.
In 1954, at the age of 18, she had my father, Roger Dale. I have no idea who his father was, and I am wondering if anyone knows.
Molly then married a Mr.Speaks, and my father just went by that name for the rest of his life. Molly then married an Otto C Hill, and they moved to California.
My father died without knowing his real last name, and I don't want to die without knowing what MY real last name is.
Can anyone help?
I am looking for any marriage certificates for Molly Ann Mullins.
Thanks so much!
Devri Speaks

They could be of anyone who is connected with my family line, which includes Speaks, Dobbs, Creameans, Burton, Gittings, Barnett etc. I'm hoping someone will be able to ID some of the photos for me. However, I don't recognize the names you mentiond. Email me privately if you want the URLs of where to see them.
