Re: Fascinating DNA findings for SPEIR(S)/SPIER(S)/SPEAR(S)/SPEER(S)

The most active and largest database for genealogical dna is at FamilyTreeDNA. If you join a group the cost of the test is:

$128. for 25 markers and $153.00 to do 37 markers including shipping and handling. (There is also a 12 marker test, but that's not going to tell you enough to figure out relationships with other people). I was able to do it in June at a special price of $119 for 37 markers, but I don't know when they'll be offering that deal again. Here's the link to both join the group and order a test kit from FamilyTreeDNA:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Spears

Now there also is another kit you can order from Ancestry.com. They charge $99 for a 33 marker test ($111 w/ shipping and tax). Of that I think 30-31 markers can be compared to our group that did the 37 marker test. They also have a 46 marker test for $149 ($164.55 w/ shipping and tax). But that one doesn't really allow you to compare much more than the 33 marker test with those who have tested with FamilyTreeDNA. Hardly any Spear/Speer have tested with Ancestry. So it is important to consider where your potential matches are in deciding which test to choose. You can check out the ancestry test at:

http://dna.ancestry.com/buyKitGoals.aspx

If you browse through their various surname projects there is one for Speer, but I tried joining and they haven't admitted me and it only has 2 members. (If you test with FamilyTreeDNA you can still add your results to Ancestry and join their projects, but you can't join projects on FamilyTreeDNA if you do the Ancestry test).

The test might seem costly, but you might see if a couple of cousins or siblings might like to share the cost. I did this with two of my lines.

Janet
If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me off of Ancestry messaging.
Akaha@comcast.net

Fascinating DNA findings for SPEIR(S)/SPIER(S)/SPEAR(S)/SPEER(S)

I've been researching my Speir(s) family for about 15 years and after total frustration in figuring out several connections, I decided that maybe DNA might be a way around the missing paper trail. As Speir(s) is my mother's direct line and dna requires a male carrying the same Y chromosome of your ancestor, it was necessary for me to solicit the aid of a fourth cousin, who was kind enough to be our donor.

We have only received the results of our 37 marker test in the past week, and even though it may take us a while to find the matches we need to resolve some of the questions I have, I feel extremely satisfied with our investment and the information that we have gleened from those who have proven to be our distant ancestors!

Here are the things that we have learned:

1. We seem to be the first Speir(s) who lived in Scotland AFTER 1700 to have done DNA.

2. We did have some very good matches and they all shared some variation of our surname. We all have been assigned to the haplotype I2b1. These Speir appear to have lived in Scotland around 1600 and then moved to Ireland. Most of them now use the SPEER/SPEER spellings.

3. The SPEER researchers in this project have evidence that suggests that their line can be traced back to a nobleman by the name of Milius Speire or Spär. Malius married Eupheimia whose lineage can be directly traced back to BOTH the King of Norway and the King of Scotland.

4. As all Speir(s) members of our project seem to fall into two main types, I strongly feel that we are going to find that ALL of the Speir(s) of the Ayrshire and Renfrewshire are related. The only question will be how far back we have to go to find that connection. A 37 marker test can't tell you the exact way that you are related, but it can give you a pretty good idea of the time period where you share a common ancestor. Take a look at the project at the link below, and see for yourself!

Link to the Y-DNA Spears Project:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/spears/results

You can see that almost all of us share the same haplotype and similar markers.

Clearly DNA can only be a good tool if there is a sizeable pool of donors with your surname and from the same geographic location. So the more Speir(s) who join us, the more we all can benefit in ALL learning more about our past.

Please contact me if you care to share information on Speir(s) or want to know more about DNA testing on EITHER FamilyTreeDNA or Ancestry. (The Ancestry 33 marker test would allow you to compare 31 markers with those in our project).

Janet Akaha

Sherry,

I have not read the other replies to your post, but you are incorrect in your genealogy. George Washington Carpenter's father was not Adam Carpenter; his father was Henry Carpenter, who was the youngest son of George Zimmerman Carpenter. Adam was an older brother of Henry. There has been a misunderstanding about this in the Carpenter family going back at least three generations. Henry had nothing to do with Carpenter's Station. He came west to Kentucky long after Adam and his brothers arrived. FYI: My grandfather was Benjamin Harrison Carpenter, who was a son of John Frye.

-Dan Greenfield
I hope someone can help me. My aunt, Elizabeth Dorris Hooker, married Alfred Earl Spears in the 1920s in Los Angeles. They had one daughter, Barbara (Patsy) Spears, born 6 Dec 1931. She died from an accident on 30 Nov 1941 in Los Angeles.

I would very much like to contact members of Alfred Earl Spears's family to find out more about Patsy, whom they may have known. I was too young when she died to have known or remembered her. Unfortunately, my family kept almost no photos or other mementos of her life.

Thank you,

Maureen

But when Orange Co IN told me they had a marriage license for John Mason and Caroline Spears, I thought I had another problem solved (10 yrs ago). I just now decided to start research on the Spears line and my first week, I am able to determine my research from 10 yrs ago was not factual. I guess that is what happens when you really start to dig. Your family bible is the key for me otherwise I could go on pretending (joke!). Researching these common names: John Mason, John Williams, Smith - does back it extra difficult.
Thanks again.

Yes, I have found information posted on some of my lines that is incorrect. Can not imagine where the info got its start. I have added Post Its. But that info is out there now!
Thanks for getting me straight on Caroline Spears. It has now put a hole in my genealogy but I will work again to get it corrected. Hey, what is 10 years in genealogy research
Good luck to you and your research

Let me know what your connection is to the Spears. I started looking for this line in the 1960's. I noticed you posted in 2002. I haven't worked on the genealogy for several years. Hope you are still interested. Phyllis Wright - St. Louis, Mo.

Delamar Spears and Sadie Matthews

Greetings, I found a message posted in 2000 by Becky Spears Wright and have decided to throw a message out as well. The original message I read was from a daughter of Lonnie Barry Spears. I am Barry's sister's daughter. My mother is Ruth Spears. Her siblings include Peggy Honeycutt, Bobby Spears, Patsy, Tommy Spears, Lonnie Barry Spears, Eddie Spears, Patsy, and Marie. My mother has four children and we were raised in Miami. My siblings include Michael Moore, Daniel Moore, and Mona Lisa Moore Gonzalez. My mother was married to Franklin Ross Moore, Kenneth Everett Crosby, and Fred Harvey before her present marriage. I do not have much more information on our roots but according to my mother, Delamar's mother's name was Fanny Amanda Barry. Lonnie Barry was named after his maternal grandmother although in all honesty, Sadie Hay Spears was not a terribly faithful wife. I hope this isn't a devastating surprise for anyone. She was also accused of murder in St. Augustine, Florida of a deaf mute in the early 1960's. Sadie, known as "Nanny," might have been some part Seminole. She hunted and fished. I actually have a picture of her next to a black bear that she killed in the everglades. Sadie died in Lillington, NC in February 1984 at the age of 58 and the funeral was attended by many of her children and some grandchildren. (I know my brothers attended.) I have found an obituary for Sadie's mother who died on Valentine's day in Fort Myers Florida. Sadie's mother is referred to as "Mrs. James Hay" and died in 1938 at the age of 47. She had three sons including James Hay, Jasper Hay, and Aaron Hay, and five daughters including Ethel Black, Josephine Wryals, Pansie Wryals, and Nina Hay. I hope by using as many names as I can think of that this message will be found by someone else's search. I wish I knew more so if anyone has information they are willing to share, I can be reached at Jenniferbedfordjd@gmail.com

I am looking for direct male descendants of brothers of George Washington Spears or of his sons except for David C. Spears.

My husband's DNA matches that of a descendant of David C. Spears, the supposed son of George Washington Spears who died in Lawrence Co. OH in 1834. It also matches that of a descendant of Franklin Johnson who lived in Cabell Co. WV, just across the Ohio River from Lawrence Co. My husband's surname is Atkins (changed from Adkins).

We would like to find someone who is willing to participate in a DNA test through FamilyTreeDNA in order to help determine my husband's male ancestry. If you know of anyone who might fit this description,I would appreciate your letting me know. Thank you.

Dear Cousins,
My source for the article was Opal Moody the granddaughter of William Bedford Reynolds son of Indian Joe Reynolds son of Delilah Spears. The Spears family were Chicamauga Cherokee. When the Ridge family helped cause the trail of tears. Several of the Spears family were involved in the murder of the Ridge family. Opal was in her late 80s thirty years ago when we corresponded. Her son was a doctor in Florida. Opal also had a picture of Indian Joe Reynolds which I have never been able to get ahold of. I am sure her son has it. The bigest problem in this case is that the Hart County Courthouse burned in the early 1900s. In part of the records saved states that Delilah Reynolds was in the process of divorce. I would like to hear from all of the interested parties. I do know where you can get a copy of the article, the Hart County Historical society in Munfordville Kentucky.

Hi..well I have a similiar problem..someone posted a tree using that marriage record that my Caroline Spears Mason is the one who moved to Tx..and then it shows the Mason line with them listed in it in Lawrence Co Ind..and then them moving to Tx..so I don't know if this is the correct information on the Mason line or not..but its posted so most think its right..but it's not as far as Caroline and John Mason moving to Tx..this tree also states that they married in Tx..and her being born in 1815 Ga. and dying in 1880s..so instead of getting facts someone did a guess.because mine was born 1810..and died est 1894..so now alot of people have mistaken information..There are several lines of Spears/Speers in Orange co..some also I think near Crawford Co and Lawrence co..one line did move out west I believe..Cindy

Hi.by the bible record I have...my Caroline Spears was the daughter of Wm Spears and Susan Ridens/Reddens..in cenuss it shows that both were born in S.C. Caroline was born b est 1810 Ky..she married a John Mason in Orange Co on 17 Sept 1833 Book C2 p 51 then he either died or they divorced and she married a Wm Pruit/Prewitt on March 19 1846 in Orange Co Ind Book C3 p 66. Wm Pruitt died 20 Oct 1868 in Orange Co. She then moved in with her son in law James F Parks and her daughter Nancy Mason Parks near Veale Twp Daviess Co. Indiana she died est 1894 the stone is hard to read..she had two sons by 2nd husband they are Wm R Pruitt and Thomas Pruitt..her stone has Prewitt and Thomas has Pruitt..I do not know who the parents of John Mason were as I can't find any information on him except that he is named on the death cert of Nancy Ann Mason Parks...I did look at census records for the John Mason and Caroline Mason in Tx and it says she was born 1815 Ga.
