Bren,

I was just reading through your last posts and am curious...you said Julia Ann (Speas) & James H. Reed, were your GG-Grandparents. You also said Squire Henry Speas was your G-GrandDad. I have Squire & Julia Ann as brother & sister, is Squire also the name of Julia's son? I don't have any names of children for Julia & James Reed, so I could just be confused.

You had also asked me about Lucy Ann Sprinkle, was she not married to Julia Ann Speas's brother, Squire Henry Speas (siblings, children of Jonathan Speas)? That's what I have, help me if I'm wrong.-Beki

Bren,
How exciting, I'd love to see pictures of Squire Speas & the farm there. You were right, My GGG-Grand Dad is Peter Speas, brothers to Jonathan, Squire's Dad & your G-Grand Dad. You spoke of inter-marrying within the Speas family and I see in my line, that Speas frequently married "Fiscus, Arney, Hauser, Hilsabeck, etc" & they all originated from Stokes, North Carolina. It's as if they moved in a group, possibly the Moravian Church group? Anyway, I'm very interested and would love to know more of your line. That's interesting that your G-Grandparents were James & Julia Reed. My email is sersland@tritel.net

Hi Beki: Looks like we are related then...my great-grand father is Squire Henry Speas (I have a photo of him if you like)...and I too descend from John & Mary through their son Jonathan (Squire's dad) which must be a brother to your GGG-Grand Dad Peter-correct? Lucy is how I have linked to Jamestown and onward via her mom a Newsome...the Reeds and speas inter-married alot ...in fact, my grandmother is the offspring of first cousins (a speas n reed)...it has been so hard to get anywhere with the Reeds! My side of the Speas stayed in NC...until my Grandmother/Dad moved to Florida. I have photos of the old Speas/Reed farm. Julia Ann Speas and James H Reed are my Great-great grandparents. So do you know how you connect to Lucy? Bren

Hi Bren, I'll do my best to answer your questions. First, at this point I only see one "Reed" connection and that is Julia Ann Speas (b. 11/7/1848)married a James Hamilton Reed (b. 1845, d. 1887)in NC. Julia's father was Jonathan Speas, son of John Spies(Speas).

Also, my only connect to the Sprinkle family that I see is through Lucy Ann Sprinkle, married to Squire Henry Speas (b. 09/18/1830)but this is a distant relation to me, as Squire's father is also Jonathan Speas, son of John Spies (Speas) my GGGG-Grandfather and brother to my GGG-Grandfather, Peter Speas.

My GGG-Grandfather Peter Speas, son of John & Mary Elizabeth (Geiger) Spies (spelling changed to "Speas") was born 1798 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. He married Mary "Polly Ann" Hauser (also from Stokes, NC) and they married at & moved to Owen Co., Indiana. They had all of their eight? children there in IN, including my GG-Grandfather Nathaniel Speas. It seems at least most of the Speas family, along with others that came from NC to Indiana, then moved over to Marshall Co., Iowa bef 09/1863. There are still numerous Speas in that area, my father was also born there in Marshall Co., Iowa as well.

Hope I answered your questions, feel free to ask more.

Beki (Speas) Sersland

Hi Beki: Just wondering if your side of the speas crosses with the Reeds of NC? The link you have given looks pretty close to what my grandmother gave me as a teenager about the Speas and Reed line of NC...if you are related to Sprinkle line - I have traced that back to James Townand then all the way bac to Adam through Lucy Ann Sprinkle...so how are you linked to the speas of NC?
Bren

I am trying to see where Daniel Napoleon Speas fits into the Speas lineage. Can anyone give me more information. In Casper, Wyoming there is a Speas Fish Hatchery named after Daniel Speas for all of his work there at Bessmer Bend. I'm quite interested in this history and would love anything anyone can contribute. I know he married Mary Almeda BICE (1850-1959)in Central City, Merrick, Nebraska on 19 Jun 1887.

Thank you,

Beki (Speas) Sersland

I'm not sure if we're related, there were so many different spellings for "Speas" such as Spiess, Spies, Speace or Speas and you can see where when pronouncing it that there would be.

From my records, my relatives came from Germany to Pennsylvania then to North Carolina and my line came to Indiana and then to Iowa. My line goes as followed,

Hieronymous (Jerome) SPIES "SPIESS" born 06/04/1732 in Fickenhuetten, Germany, died in North Carolina

John (Spies or Speace) was born 14 May 1762 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA

Peter SPEAS born 1798 in Stokes County, North Carolina

Nathaniel SPEAS born 04 Dec 1840 in Jefferson Twp., Owen Co., Indiana

Charles Alfred SPEAS born 25 Mar 1875 in Gilman, Green Castle Twp., Marshall Co., Iowa

email me if you'd like and we can see.

I remember many stories about Mr. Speas, but can remember his driver better than I can remember him personally. Would love to see his house. I am sure my Dad was in it. I remember going to the office with Dad on Saturdays and him talking to Mr. Speas on the telephone. Dad said he always wanted to hear the orders coming in everyday.
