Hello Stacey...

Nice to meet you!

I am your brother's sister, Joan (Joni). We grew up together and were raised by your great-grandma Speck and your great aunts Maxine & Ruby. She had 15 children, 13 of which survived. Your great-grandma's name was Mary Jane (Day) Speck and she was born on October 19, 1883. She was married to Alfred Albert Speck, who was born in 1874. I believe his father was Noah Speck and his mother Sarah. Grandma Speck listed her mother as Jennie House and her father as Fone Day, however, I have not found much in the way of information for them. You can, however, check the 1910 census and you will find your great-grandma's handwriting and the listing of the five children she had (so far) at that time.

It is my understanding from the family Louie and I had the same father, however, Danny had a different father. I did find his birth certificate and he was born in Alameda, but it doesn't list his Dad, so that may be, in fact, true.

The Speck children are as follows:

Clarence Speck m. Mildred (1 child)
Gertrude Speck Spencer m. Harold (4 children - 1 girl)
Ethel Speck Hammer m. Earl (4 children)
Irene Speck Lawson m. Shirley Keith (3 children - 1 boy)
Jean Jeannette Speck Stitt m. William (1 child - adopted- deceased)
Albert Speck m. Dorothy (3 children, 1 deceased)
Maxine Speck (unmarried)
Ruby Speck (unmarried)
Vernita Speck Pitcher m. Orville (Either 4 or 5 children)
Hertha Speck Roggash m. Walter (4 children - 1 girl)
Phyllis Lorraine Speck Lyons m. Louie Freitas (3 children)
Mary Jane (Billie) Speck Elliott m. John (3 children - 1 girl)
Vexie Speck Parrish m. Arthur (3 children - 1 girl)

Please note: this are not in order of their births, they are taken from memory....Phyllis is the youngest and Clarence the oldest.

You have tons and tons of second cousins, and I have five chilren - 2 boys, 3 girls, ranging in age from 48 to 28.

Now, all the children mentioned are mostly my age, with a few younger, and have children of their own.

I hope this has been a help to you...if I can help you further, please do not hesitate to ask and would love hearing if you have any new information on the Speck side. I would also be happy to share memories of your father when he was younger, if you would like.

Your aunt,

Joan (Joni)

P.S. You will find a "tree" on here for Irene Effie Speck - who is your great aunt.

Hello, I am trying to find information on William Speck. I believe he was of Washington Co. PA, but that may be a false assumption as he may have moved there early on in his life.
Searching for descendants/information on Edward Speck

Edward's parents were Daniel F Speck and Luella Fulmer (dau. of Samuel & Mary Fulmer). He was my biological grandfather. He was first married to Alice E Hauck and they had 3 children: Virgina, Eugene & Brian (my father). They divorced in roughly 1941-1942, I believe. He did remarry, but I do not know her name. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I come to dead stop with this side of the family.

David Speck Mecklenburg NC death date

Hi!

I am a descendant of David Speck (Specht) born probably in Germany, lived in Mecklenburg County, NC. I just today ran across a book called "Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas 1780-1800 Mecklenburg County, NC". It contains the court proceedings for David Speck's last will and testament which was disallowed. (The book also mentioned a Theobald Speck. Not sure of the relation but he probably died sometime in early 1782.)

I have had a hard time nailing down the time of David's death. I think now I can say that it occured between June 26, 1781 when David Speck completed a land transaction and April, 1782 when this court proceeding took place. For anyone out there interested, I can give references in this book.

It appears that David Speck's estate was in dispute for seven years.

Robert Schneider
Mary E. Chappell Hazel Speck Pope County, IL and Alabama

Hi!

I thought I would post something I just found about Mary Elizabeth Chappell. She is my third gr grandmother. For years, I've been looking for documentation as to her date of death. Today I found her obit in a book entitled "Early Newspaper Clippings from Hardin County, IL". Mary E. was born in Alabama, but moved to Pope County, IL when very young. She first married James Hazel. He died. Then she married John E. Speck. I believe he died in 1868. After the 1860, I had never been able to find her in a census, so I assumed that she died before 1870.

The obit I found today showed date of death August 12, 1894 in Carmi, White County, IL. This data is consistent with some data that had been posted on the internet for years. Trouble was I had never found a source for it. Today I did. Also, this obit showed that she married twice after the death of her second husband John Speck. The third husband was Thomas Lavender and the fourth was Capt. Richard Knuckey.

If anybody out there was familiar with this info, I sure would appreciate hearing from you!

Robert Schneider

Frederick SPECK

Frederick SPECK. I am searching for some descendants of Frederick Speck. He was born in 1783 in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents were Godfrey Augustus SPECK and Sarah TOWNSEND. In 1788 when the family left Baltimore, Frederick would be five years old. We have calculated that twelve years had passed from the time the family left Baltimore until they showed up in Washington County, Pennsylvania for the 1800 Federal Census, just before they entered Ohio in 1800. Since his mother had been born in Virginia I would suggest there might have been family in Virginia where they spent some time. If that were so, then by the time Frederick was between fifteen and seventeen, he would have become familiar with family and friends in Virginia and determined not to continue on to Ohio with the family. He (as a male, age 17) was not listed with the family in the 1800 Federal Census and would have been old enough to be independent. If he did not move on to Ohio with the family, then he at least kept in touch with them. Otherwise, the family would not have known that he ‘fought in the war of 1812 and he has never been heard of since.’ That statement was from our family history book published in 1900. I take it to mean that he probably either died in the war, or chose not to continue contact with his family. When he went to war in 1812, he would have been 29 years old with plenty of time in the interim to have married and started a family. This is why we continue to be on the lookout for descendants of Frederick. If he had a family of his own, it is possible that he did not pass along information about his Ohio family and so the connection would be lost. We have not found any hard records that we could use for leads, including records for the War of 1812. This SPECK family have all been valuable members of their communities. If Frederick's family is out there, we'd like to make contact.
D Small Gilligan jgillig1@nycap.rr.com

John E. Speck of Pope County, Illinois

Hi!

I'm interested in John E. Speck's possible Civil War record. I would like to purchase his Civil War record, but I really am not sure anymore whether the John E. Speck who was my 3rd great grandfather even served. I orignally thought that the John E. Speck born 1831 in Lincoln County, TN, who moved with his family to Pope County, IL served in the CSA. Now, l'm not sure. Anybody out there know about this?

The John E. Speck I have in mind was the son of Daniel Speck and Susannah Howard. He married Mary Elizabeth Chappell. He died in 1868 in Pope County, IL. His daughter Susan Speck was my 2nd gr grandmother. She married Jesse Holloman.
Family homepage URL: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-L-Sc...
Thanks!

Robert Schneider
Berkeley Missorui 63134

BENZING aus Schewnningen (Wtbg), died 4 April... age 1 month, 24 days.

I believe this likely to be a couple who came over with their respective families as part of the 1847 emigration from Schwenningen.
Parnel Speck and Wife Anna, a Brief History

Parnel and Anna Speck lived in Taylor, Wayne County Michigan on Allen Road. Parnell was good with woodworking and was a skilled carpenter. He was handy with a jigsaw. They lived on land in a farm like setting that was subdivided into approx. acre lots known as Allen-Eureka Farms due to the major cross roads. It was just west of the Detroit River and Wyandotte. The farm land once belonged to the Grahl family. They (the Grahls) remembered when the railroad went through. They told tales of when electricity first went through that people feared it might cause fires and explosions. This was of course over 100 years ago ! The railroad was to the east side of the Grahl line. This was one time Ecorse Township and Taylor Center (now Taylor) became its own township and later a city in the 1960s. Parnel Speck died about 1968 . Mrs. Speck couldn't tend the home and yard on her own and was out putting up a for sale sign just as my parents were house hunting and driving by. This is the year my family moved in (1968) and I grew up on the acre and in an old rickity house, that my neighbor Mr. Ludwig patched up here and there. (Mr. Ludwig incidentally lived in a historic out building on the property until he could build his home, a cabin, on his own acre. This was about the 1950s) Mr. Speck was of course deceased and could no longer tend his beloved house. It is the childhood home I loved, with the big green back yard. The Specks had built and owned it since the 1920s or 30s. They later moved it closer to the road and put an addition onto it. I hope these memories will help a Speck researcher gain a little light into their lives.

Specks in Illinois, 1840-1850

"My Specks" came to Illinois in the late 1840's or 1850's. They probably had just come from Germany. There is a slight possibility that they came to Wisconsin before Illinois. Has anyone run across Carl or Hannah Speck? Thanks in advance.

Speck's in Iowa

I am looking for any information on Speck's located in Iowa. My father is Larry D. Speck, My grandfather is Donald P. Speck. They both live in Iowa. My maiden name should've been Speck as well, but my parents had me before my mother's divorce from her first husband was final. So I ended up with the maiden name of Steffens, and that has caused me to be untraceable to the Speck family. I want to know where I came from, so I'm asking if anyone has any info. on Speck's in Iowa. My dad's mother's maiden name was Joyce Health, her and my grandfather had 3 boys before she left with the 2 older ones when my dad was only about 18 months old. She moved to Texas, remarried (her last name then became Heath), and died when I was 3 yrs. old. Both my uncles died around the same time. I never met any of them. My great-grandmother Speck had somewhere between 8-11 kids. This about all I know about the Speck's. Please contact me with any info. Thanks.

Margaret Speck

I have been researching my Speck ancestor for about two years now and have found absolutely no information! Hopefully someone out there can give me a hint. Margaret Elizabeth Speck was born 21 Feb 1812 according to the family bible. In one census she says she was born in Virginia, but I haven't found any other information to confirm that. I know she married William Reed McKinley 19 Dec 1833 in Highland Co, Ohio and they lived in Ross County, Ohio for several years and had several children. Sometime after William was killed in the Civil War, Margaret and some of the children moved to Marshall Co., Kansas, where Margaret died around 1891. I saw in another post that there's a book out there on the Specks, but nobody ever said what the title of the book is or who wrote it. Does anyone out there have any information? Thanks!
