Thank you very much for the reply, Roger.

Well, I just looked in my database, and strangely I find only James W. Speedy -- I'm not sure what happened since I posted the original question. My interest is obviously because James W. Speedy married Ida Wendell, daughter of Cyrus Wendell and Ruth Burr, in 1895 in Perry Co., and I have a ton of genealogy on the Wendel(l) family. I must have not finished entering data on James' parents or something, or maybe wasn't certain of the relationships. James W. Speedy was probably born in the late 1860s or early 1870s -- was he part of your Speedy clan? I shall have to dig into the censuses and try to figure out where I stalled on that family. I'm really only interested in the parents of James W. Speedy (I think), as I have no other known connections except via the Ida Wendell marriage. Ida's grandparents John and Rebecca (Hart) Wendell were my 3rd g-grandparents.

more is here:

http://www.landofthebuckeye.net/

Thanks again.

Don
Don, Andrew Speedy is my gg-gfather. My line is through Samuel's brother, Jefferson Speedy. I don't know much about Samuel, but I am working on Speedys and would be glad to help and share info. I have picture of Andrew and Jefferson and wives. Andrew was born Mar 2, 1802 according to my info. Do you know Nancy's maiden name? Thanks, Roger McVay, rogerandiane@aol.com

Correction: No SURNAME has a coat of arms in heraldry. Coats of arms are granted to individuals, and only the heir may use the same coat of arms. Other relatives may get a coat of arms differenced to show their relationship to the original. Only the Lord Lyon has the power to grant coats of arms and this process is expensive and requires a proved pedigree to be submitted.

** You have made an unwarranted assumption. There was no "correct" spelling until very recent times. The concept did not exist in earlier times. The IGI is neither complete nor comprehensive - it ignores the pre-Reformation period.
One can find the surname Speedie/Speedy as Speddy and Spuddy in the 1540s (Protocol book of James Foulis), and the 1520s as Speithy/Spethy (Protocol book of John Foulis)
The IGI makes assumptions about variant spellings, but often fails to recognise a variant for what it is.

Re: is this a scottish surname? speedy?

"SPEEDY was of two-fold origin. It was a baptismal name, a font name wishing prosperity or good-speed to the child and it was also used as a nickname for a swift runner, from the Old English word SPED. In Scotland the name is spelt SPEEDIE. Surnames having a derivation from nicknames form the broadest and most miscellaneous class of surnames, encompassing many different types of origin. The most typical classes refer adjectivally to the general physical aspect of the person concerned, or to his character. Many nicknames refer to a man's size or height, while others make reference to a favoured article of clothing or style of dress. Many surnames derived from the names of animals and birds. In the Middle Ages ideas were held about the characters of other living creatures, based on observation, and these associations were reflected and reinforced by large bodies of folk tales featuring animals behaving as humans. Early records of the name mention Johannes Sped, 1273, County Suffolk. Margaret Speed was documented in County Cambridge in the year 1300. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. Later instances of the name include Thomas Spedy, who was a witness in Edinburgh in the year 1553, and John Speede and Elizabeth Cheynye who were married in London in the year 1555. John Spidie was recorded in Dunfermline in 1571. Cicilie Speed of Tattenhall (widow) was listed in the Wills at Chester in 1620. Tom Speedy was a game-keeper and naturalist, who died in Scotland in 1924."

Our family tree starts with a Dr Robert George Dunnel Speedy, born 1863 / 1872 (no-one seems to be sure). He married Ivy Bradfield. They had 3 children, Albert, Mary and Robert George.

Captain Tristram Speedy was an incredible character! I'm a historical novelist and I am (partially) basing my hero on him. If you search the net for "Julia Margaret Cameron" who was a Victorian photographer and also add "Speedy" into the search engine, you'll see photos of him, some with the Emperor Tewodros's son Alemayou, whom Speedy brought back to England. He was known as Basha Falaka, in Amharic meaning Speedy Captain. :)

Here is an URL that has LOTS of info on him:
www.library.northwestern.edu/africana/ winterton/inventory/winterton-inventory.pdf

If you can't find it, it's the WInterton Collection at Northwest University.

Good luck!
Karen

I am looking for any info on the surname - Speedy, in particular 'Lord Speedy'.There was a Captain Speedy that was surposed to have transported an Indian Prince to Britian in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. For this he was awarded the title of 'Lord'. The title was lost somewhere along the line for not having paid their 'dues' to the crown. Most of the first born males were named 'Robert'. The last known male of the direct male line is named Robert Christopher Michael Speedy born on 30 August 1969 in Cape Town, South Africa. His father was Robert George Speedy Jr - born 19 September 1930- died 15 July 1977 - in South Africa. He has a brother called John and a sister Sheila. There is also a link to the Jones Family. Robert Speedy married Valerie Jean Lord, born Cape Town, South Africa. I was born to Robert Speedy on 29 September 1964. I am trying to find out where the family originated from etc.
Any and all information would be really appreciated.

Poplar St
Pekin, IN 47165

I would suggest that you write her frist and mention that
your Speedy is from Yorktown, and see if she can help.
Good luck, this is a hard name to check anything on, however, I know that several came into the Southern part
of Indiana, I spoke to a lovely man and women in Eckerty,
Indiana, they are in the phone book.

Good Luck.

T. wright

I wish I did have info. I do know we have several Joihn Speedy's in our family tree. We are actually up to John Clark Speedy IV at this point. I wonder if the John Speedy you reference ties into my family tree? Speedy is such an odd name, especially w/ the spelling with the "Y" at the end.
