I am looking for information on George Speelman who married Emma L Weaver. They lived in Antrim and Elk Rapids, Michigan and moved to Battle Creek, Michigan. They had two children Louise M Speelman (born 1906) and Harry J Speelman (born 1916. The spelling could possibly be Spulman/Speelman/Speilman. George's brother's name is Issac Speelman and were born in Homestead Township in Michigan.

Re: James Corydon Speelman I,II, III, IV

Christine, According to military records from Ancestry.com
your Burt Speelman enlisted WW1 in New Mexico but was a
citizen of Bogosa Springs, Colorado. He stated his birth
as Dec. 10, 1890

James Speelman enlisted in WW2 Nov. 6, 1942 from Denver,
Colorado. He was born in 1923 and was 67 inches tall weighing 216 lbs.

I traced the family back to Cherokee Co. Iowa and found
a Bert H. Speelman who was the son of Salathiel Speelmon
and Lovina C. Speelmon. Bert H. Speelman was actually
named Harry B. Speelman so he evidently didn't like the
name Harry.

I can tell from the spelling of the name Speelmon instead
of Speelman who this family is. Only one family I know
spelled the name this way and found that Salathiel Speelmon
was born 14 June 1859 in Indiana being the son of Jacob
Speelmon and Mary Young. Jacob Speelmon was born in Morgan Co. W. Virginia 25 Nov. 1834 and was the son of Solomon
Speelmon/Speelman/Spielman born in Frederick Co. Md in 1790
and the brother of my ancestor Jacob Spielman. For more
information please contact me direct.
I just started working on my dad's (Carl McGhee) family. His dad was Charles W. McGhee b. 10 Dec 1910 in Ohio died in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were (according to his marriage license) Sherman McGhee born in Ohio and Jennie Speelman born in Michigan. That is all I know. Does that connect with you and if so, do you have any more information? I could use all of the help I can get. Thanks. Stephanie

The Darke Co. Ohio 1870 census taker really blew it.
According to Ancesry Com (one world tree) Isaac Speelman
wal married to Elizabeth Mendenhall 15 March 1866 in
Darke Ohio. Their children were listed as Roswell Speelman
b- 5 Feb. 1867, Morrison E. Speelman b- 18 Jan 1969, and
Leonore E. Speelman b- 28 Aug. 1870. The Westmorland Co.
Pa. Speelman/Spielman is a well documented family. Isaac
Speelman's father George Speelman born there 28 Dec. 1813
as well as the grandfather David Speelman. The G-grandfather
John Spielman came to Westmorland from Northampton Co Pa. where he married Catherine Koenig and found there in
church records as early as 1770.

Morrison Speelman from Darke Co., Ohio

Who were Morrison Speelman's parents? I located two possiblities from the Census record.

(1) Isaac & Elizabeth Speelman appear in the 1880 Census in Ringgold Co., Iowa with children shown as Rosewell (14), Morrison (12), and Leonore (9) all three born in Ohio. However, this family is not found in the 1870 Census.

(2) The 1870 Census has a James M. and Lydia Speelman with a daughter Rosa(3) and Morrison (1) both children born in Ohio living in Darke Co., Ohio.

In both cases the head of the house hold was born in PA while his wife was born in IN. Are these both the same family? If not, which one is the correct set of parents of the Morrison Speelman that married Rebecca Asabelle Mendenhall???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jackie, I am sorry. In my excitement I didn't scross down far enough to see Frank and Sarah Janes's children. That is wonderful. Thank you very much for that. Do you know any of the married names of the girl(s)? I am assuming she left after the last birth. Do you know how long after? How on earth do you think she took care of those children without a father. He must have been grief stricken. And then to take their name away from them? Highly unlikely she married a Spillman. Thank you so much.

Hi, Jackie. This is Jodie, Julia's mother. I am sure she will want to write too, but I couldn't wait. Thank you for your very fast reply. This ancestor of ours is one I have been working on for about 25 years with very little luck. I am so sorry that I know nothing about the Speelmans. I have done a lot of work around southern Ohio and am fairly knowledgeable. I have copies, although incomplete,of most of the cemeteries around Meigs and Jackson counties. If there is anything I can help you with there, let me know.

Your information is unbelievably helpful to us. I knew and grew up with my grandmother close at hand; she was my buddy. Her sister, Sarah Jane, was such a puzzlement; she remembered absolutely nothing about her and never saw her after her parents died c. 1877. Imagine the difficulty with a woman, first adopted, then totally cut herself off from her sibling 9 years younger, then married and changed her name, then changed her name for whatever reason. What a strange thing to do. I am stunned. Maybe, I shouldn't be. My dad's grandmother on his dad's side (BOWEN) was pretty independent too. That is the kind word.

You said Sarah Jane took the children. Do you know if she divorced her husband? Do you have Frank's birthdate, marriage date, or death date? Was Frank Welsh or English? Do you have any idea when Sarah Jane moved to Zanesville or which year or the names of any of her children? Did she ever see or talk with Frank again?

It looks as though Sarah Jane was named after her mother and grandmother on her father's side. Do you need any information about the Westmorelands at all? I probably have whatever you need for your line.

Hi Bob, Sorry I didn't answer sooner but I was in South Carolina with my son and daughter in law for Thanks Giving. Please do send any info on John Speelman in Fayette County. I have Speelman ancestors their dating to around 1800. I have no idea where they came from. Their was a Speelman clan from north of Philly that settled in Westmorelnad county about 10 miles north of Connellsville Pa. They left for western Ohio in early 1830's so I have no real connection to MY Speelmans. Hope you had a great holiday. Jack

Twila,

I don't know if there is a connection between Gideon Long and Letitia Long. Leticia Long married William Speelman in Fayette County, PA on 18 March 1832 and soon thereafter moved with her husband to Knox Co, Ohio. I have no information regarding whether she moved with any of her parents or siblings to Knox Co, Ohio. I would be very interested in any information you have on Letitia Long as I have run into a brick wall finding her ancestors. I recently found the following information at the Knox Co public library in Mount Vernon, OH.
Source: Knox County Death Records, Book 2, 1884-1899, Mount Vernon Public Library
Letita (sic) Speelman, d 12 May 1885, married, age 75y 4m 11d, at Milford Twp, Knox Co, b Green County, PA
father David Lans, mother Mary Coulter
white, cause of death paralysis, residence Milford Twp

The spelling of Letitia's father's name in the death notice above is most likely in error. It seems very likely that it was Long rather than Lans.

I have only been a member of the DAR since Oct. 4, 2003 and went in on my Mother's side.
My ancestors were David Lawrence Spielman, Sylvester Spielman, David Lorentz Speelman (b. about 1760),
William Speelman, Joseph F. Speelman, Frank L. Speelman and my Dad was Joseph F. Speelman (b. 1899). Dad switched his names and went by Frank Joseph Spillman.

My Dad had an Aunt Mary E. Speelman, born about 1872-1873 in Vinton County, Ohio. I've been told that she was a school teacher. I don't know who she married. I have not been able to do much genealogy for a few months. Ruth Hayth has done some research for me. She does not charge much. Her e-mail address is rhayth@bright.net. She lives in the Jackson and Vinton County areas. My Dad's parents were Joseph Speelman and Emma Hitt Speelman.

Re: Jacob SPEELMAN/Mabel SHANTZ

Hi Marilynn. A old high school friend of mine asked if I'd help out her parents find some info on their family since she knew I'd done a lot of genealogy research. Jacob Speelman and Mabel Shantz are her grandparents. Robert E is her father. I can pass on what she gave me to start with and what I've found in the last 1/2 hr that I've been looking! Can you pass on any Shantz info? Thanks so much. Carol
