My family is still trying to locate my gggrandparents. My grandmother passed away without ever learning anything about her grandparents and I would like to find more information while my mother and aunt are still living. We have VERY limited information. Hopefully, there is a Victory, Vickory, Vickery, Viktery, Gipson or Gibson family out there somewhere who is looking for a lost brother or son John or daughter Parthena.

There were two children, JAMES CALVIN Victory (b. 8/11/1864 in Benton County, TN) and WILLIAM LAYAFETTE Victory (b. abt. 1866 also in TN). According to an article in "Families and Histories of Benton Co., TN 1836-1986," pp. 299-300 at the Jackson, TN public library, James Calvin and William Lafayette were orphaned in about 1866 or 1867 (when James was about 2 yrs old) and they were told only that their father was JOHN Victory and their mother was PARTHENA Gipson or Gibson and that she was part Cherokee. For a time the boys lived, as wards of the court, in the home of Gideon Cullin SPELLINGS and Malvina Aden SPELLINGS in District 4 of Benton County. It is not known if they were placed there by the court or by their parents.

When James was about 16 (approx. 1880) the boys moved to Carroll Co. (Districts 1 and 6) where they lived with a family named WARREN and then with a JASPER TAYLOR. James worked for Mr. Taylor, while William worked for a CAPT. NED WILLIAMS and during this time the boys were separated.

We know the boys had a cousin, ANN BURKETT who was the wife of THOMAS BURKETT. Research has revealed that she is MARYANN or MARY ANN MELTON, daughter of HIRAM MELTON and MAHALA BOSWELL of the Buena Vista Area in District 18 of Carroll County. Another possible relative or in-law was a Mr. WHITE or Mr. WYATT.

This is the extent of what we know, some of which was learned from relatives of Gideon SPELLINGS (for which we are very thankful). We have not located anyone in the Warren, TAYLOR, WILLIAMS, BURKETT or MELTON families who might provide additional information. If anyone has any information regarding any of the people mentioned in this message, we would be forever grateful to hear from you. Hoping to hear from someone soon.
