It is so gracious of you to try to find the family of the Bible. Having one makes some research so easy. My maternal family bible was lost when they moved and what I would do to have it. My family name is Spillane and changed to Spellane when my grandfather immigrated to the US in early 1900's

I was alerted to your posting because I began the line of queries connected with your reply. You are very kind to try to look for the family. Generally speaking, the Spellmans/Spelmans were from the Sligo/Roscommon/Galway/Mayo area. The Spillanes were from the Tipperary/Offaly area. Some Spillanes who emigrated to England changed their name to Spellman/Spelman, and on rare occasions you see a Spellman in Tipperary. If this family emigrated from Ireland, chances are great they came from one of the four counties I mentioned. There were also families from Germany who had a name similar to Spielman, but in the US the name became Spellman. I wonder if James and Anna were born in the US or in Ireland. I hope there is someone from this family who is doing family research.

Hello momma7075, My husband found a bible in New York City with the names of James Sydney & Anna Spellman engraved on the front. This bible is very very old and is crumbling apart. Inside is recorded their 8 children, only 2 survived past 2 years old. The 2 that survived were James Sydney Spellman born August 22, 1851 and Josephine Spellman born August 16, 1850. Josephine Spellman married James Johnson Smith on October 6, 1867 and they had 7 children. Please email me at cbquiller@netzero.com if this is a relative. I want to send this book to the persons who is related to James Sydney Spellman & Anna Spellman. There is also death reports clipped from the newspaper of James Sydney Spellman dying in a fire on Bleeker Street in New York leaving his 11 year old son and daughter to mourn him. He was a fireman from Fire Patrol Company #1 of the Daniel Carpenters Lodge #643. There is also a death write-up for Anna Spellman who died at age 41. The paper stated that they lived at #81 MacDougal Street New York. Let me know please. May God bless you.
Just to add a footnote to your explanation of the origin of the Spellman name, there were some Irish families with the surname of Spillane (They seem to be from Counties Offaly and Tipperary primarily) who changed it to Spellman when they emigrated to England. For those who emigrated around the time of the famine, they would have found that if they were Roman Catholic, they probably were not welcome. It is my hypothesis that some Spillane families changed their name to Spellman to appear more British. So although most Spellmans would trace the origin of their name to Germany, there are a few who really had Spillane for a surname, not Spellman.

Spellman, M., Russia, was born August 11, 1858, in Beloit, Wis. His father was Patrick Spellman, a native of Ireland, who came to America about 1852 and settled in
Herkimer county, N. Y. After a short time he went to Wisconsin and remained there several years. He afterwards returned east and now resides in Newport township. He reared eight children. His mother died when subject was eleven years of age, and at the age of twelve he started in life for himself, working on a farm by the month for thirteen years, and for himself three years. He has since been in the hotel business. October 6, 1883 he married Carrie, daughter of William and Lorina (Stillman) Harris,
natives of Newport. To Mr. Spellman and wife have been born two children: Raymond H., born April 5, 1887, in Cold Brook, and Glenn N., deceased, born September 16,1891, in Dolgeville.
Our earliest ancestor that we know was John Spellman b. 1802 in Co. Mayo died 1888 in Illinois. He was married to Catherine "x" and had three children Patrick, Michael and Bridget (all born in the early 1830's).

John came to the U. S. and married another woman, Ann Austin. They had two children: Mary Ann and James (from whom my husband is descended.) Patrick, Michael and Bridget, along with Catherine, came to the U. S. around the 1850's and married before settling in Iowa in the early 1870's.

I don't see a connection, but there are a lot of Spellmans in the area where Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon all come together.

Betty Spelman

You are at a disadvantage, dealing with the name, Mary. I suggest you try to find her civil marriage record, which shold give the names of her parents.Just keep working backwards in the US to get as many records as you can. If Mary had siblings here, you could check their records too.
You could also check her death record for names of parents and look for a passenger record, just in case it gives her county of origin. Good luck.

Thomas Spellman of Ontonagon, Michigan in 1892

October 8, 1892 Page 4

Thomas Spellman, a 13-year-old youngster of Ontonagon, was accidently shot last week by a companion who was carelessly handling a shot gun. He died the next morning. He is the fifth boy that has been shot there this season.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Newspaper Birth, Marriage and Death Notices."
Please excuse Mike, he hates Clan Cian and is every where on the net. Remember hate blinds. Look into your name on google books and you will find without the help of blinded men your answers. Different Spelman's lived in different areas. All one has to do to see Mikes hate is type in Clan Cian and understand he builds websites. He even works in recruited teams and answers his own writings.
I pray he understands he harms more than he helps
I am a member of the Irish Clan Cian and knew Mike as a friend.
Seamus O'More
Clan O'More Society
clanomore@yahoo.com

Janice, I was looking through some old posts. I was wondering if you have original records (or copies of them) to show that the name in Offaly really was Spellman. My gggrandfather, John Spellman, born c1820, married in Dunkerrin RC parish in 1844. His wife and son later emigrated to England. They were Spellmans in England, but I was surprised to find, when I found John's marriage record, that his name had been Spillane. No doubt he changed the spelling, or his wife did, when the family emigrated to England to look more British and less Roman Catholic. Since your family came from Offaly, I wondered if they were originally Spillanes too. Perhaps not. I thought I would check. Jan

Hi, thanks for the input. (I go by Jan but am Janice also, like the original person who posted). Although I am aware of the various spellings, in my case, I have a different scenario. The name was really Spillane. More than one family (part of the same extended family) changed the spelling from Spillane to Spellman/Spelman. When these folks emigrated, the Irish, in particular the Irish who were Roman Catholic, were despised. In Stockport, where my family lived, there were what was called the "Catholic riots." Since Spellman was a name that had been used in England for many generations, I am pretty certain that this was not a misspelling of the name but an attempt to look British rather than Irish. I mentioned it on the boards because there might be others who are researching in Offaly and Tipperary for the Spellman name, and they too might discover that their name was originally Spillane. The Spellman name seems to be fairly prominent in Galway, Sligo, Roscommon, and Mayo. The largest number of Spillanes seem to be from the West Cork and Kerry area. Good luck with finding your mother's family. Jan

The record you seek is easily available at NEGHS. I copied the following from 1901 Waltham Vital Records, vol. 513, pg. 630.
James F. Kelly, clergyman, married on April 24, 1901
Patrick Joseph Farrell, age 30. Son of James Farrell & Catherine Hughes. He was a boilermaker from County Louth, Ire. and
Mary Agnes Spellman, age 26, from County Galway, Ireland.
Daughter of Martin Spellman & Margaret Carthy. Groom lived in Waltham and Bride from Newton.

You should be able to find their children's births as well at newenglandancesters.com. It's well worth the annual membership to get these vital records. You may find your local library has a subscription, or the nearest city library will.

Re: Family History of Cardinal Spellman

Hello

I'd like to add some information in relation to Cardinal Spellman's history.

His mother was indeed Ellen Conway who married his father William Spellman who was a store owner in Whitman Mass.

Ellen's mother was Ellen Conway nee Kehoe and I don't have the first name of her husband.

Ellen Kehoe came to USA from Ireland having emigrated from Co. Carlow in Ireland. In a area called Kildavin a townland in the parish of Clonegal, Ellen was born to parents Thomas and Kitty Kehoe in 1834. She emigrated at the age of 16 and married this Conway man.

Cardinal Spellman was very close to his grandmother and listened to many of her stories of her homeland in Co. Carlow Ireland.

In 1942 while in Europe involved with the American forces in WWII he visited Ireland and stayed with St. Patrick's Missionaries in Kiltegan Co. Wicklow (beside Carlow). While here a Fr. Francis Hickey helped him source his grandmothers home town and his great grandmothers grave.

Later in 1967 he donated 2000 dollars to the establishment of an athletic field and Clubhouse being named in his honour. This club is well known and still thriving in Kildavin.

My grandmother Brigid Byrne nee Kehoe was from Kildavin originally.
Her Mother was either a sister or cousin of Ellen Kehoe.

She died in childbirth with a child from a disease rampant in the area when my grandmother was young and was buried quiet quickly. The grave was not marked well but my Grandmother knew it and showed my mother Mary (Hayden) nee Byrne where it was. My mother had been ill for a while and had a wish to mark this grave before she died.

She erected a small marble heart dedicated to the memory of the Spellmans of Kildavin. A number of years ago I believe money was donated to find the grave from the Spellman tresury with St. Pstricks Cathederal in NYC. They found the grave from my mothers(since regrtably deceased R.I.P) small plaque.

A large granite gravestone and full grave now markes Cardinal Spellmans' great grandmothers grave and family in Kildavin, with my mothers small plaque still there.

Just some information and a short story I thought may help add to the questions or anyone seeking Cardinal Spellmans family history.

Moss Spelllman hung near Hemphill, Texas

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 27 June 1908 Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

MOB HANGS FIVE: SIXTH NEGRO SHOT

Bodies Discovered Mile North of Courthouse at Hemphill, Texas

Hemphill, Texas, June 22 - Five negroes, all hanged to one dogwood tree, was the grewsome spectacle that met the gaze of hundred of spectators on the Hemphill and Bronson road this morning about one mile from the court house at Hemphill. They were taken from the Hemphill jail about 1 o'clock last night by a determined mob of about 200 men. Six of them in all were taken out, and they were the negroes charged with the murder of Hugh Dean, which occurred at Rockhill church, near Geneva, two weeks ago Saturday night. One of the negroes taken by the mob tried to escape and was shot.

Nine negroes killed in Sabine County within the past two weeks is the known record, and two white men within the past two weeks. Both white men, Hugh Dean and Arie Johnson, were among the most prominent families in Sabine County, and were prominently connected throughout this section.

The six negroes taken from the jail last night were: Jerry Evans, aged about 18 years, Will Johnson, about 20 years, Moss Spellman, about 22 years, Cleve Williams, about 20 years and Will Manuel, 30 years.

"Rabbitt" Bill McCoy, a negro about 40 years old, was killed last night in front of the home of Arie Johnson, and a pistol was found full cocked by the side of his body.

Williams, whose age was about 20 years, was taken out by the mob, but slipped the ropes from his neck and hands and made an attempt to escape. He was shot.

The body of Hardy Evans, one of the principals of the Dean murder, is reported as having been found on the Hemphill and San Augustine Road, about half-way between the two places.

A negro whose name cannot be ascertained is reported as being killed, but there are many wild rumors afloat of other negroes having been killed in the county. At the present time these nine are the only ones whose names can be given with any degree of certainty. It is believed that all of them were connected with the killing of either Hugh Dean or Arie Johnson
