It has been a while since your post. Alfred & Matilda were my husbands great-great-great grandparents. One of their daughters Florence Arizona Spence, married a man by the name of Dozier, which is my mother-in-law's maiden name. This marriage I believe was the second for Florence, the first being to a man by the name of Clinton Beck. Alfred and Matilda were living and working at Palace Station. I think most of their children were born in the Yavapai County area. Do you happen to know the maiden name of Matilda's mother (perhaps Langely)?

I have the same family group in my family tree but with the parents birthdates about 10 years earlier. I have John Spence (b. about 23 April 1769 in Dunfermline) and Agnes Strang (b. 10 October 1766 in Paisley, Renfrewshire). All the childrens names and dates of birth co-incide with my tree. Johns parents were Robert Spence and Isobel Dewar.

Allan Spence
(Aberdeen, Scotland)

Re: Jean Baptiste SPENCE (b. 1811 NW Territories) m. Marie MATWEWIN

My name is Ida Spence. I too have been unable to date to connect Jean Baptiste Spence Sr. with any Orkney Spence. However, I have seen and I have a copy of his scrip application, where he declares his father was an Orkney Spence. I have scrip records for both Jean Baptiste Spence Sr and his wife Marie Matwewenin Roulette. I got them by borrowing microfiche reels from Ottawa, via interlibrary loans. JB Sr declares he was born at Cumberland House in 1807, and that his father was ___Spence, an Orkney man, and his mother was Tche-Tchit, a Swampee Indian woman. He declared he went to Le Pas (The Pas) later on and then came south to the Red River Settlement about 1868. I just got notes on church records for St Francois Xavier and Camperville, places where the priests kept their records. I will let you know later on the dates the Spences were baptised, married, and buried using these records. Starting places will be the scrip records of all involved because they attached baptism records of their children to their applications for scrip.
If you are the great-grandson of John and Madeline, I just looked through the Western Land Grants. That generation of Spences got their land grants right through Ste Rose du Lac - that is, Jean Baptiste Spence Jr, his two brothers John and Louison, and his three sons Jean Baptiste Spence usually called Sam from his first marriage to Josephte, Jean Baptiste Spence from his second marriage to Marie, and William from his third marriage to LaLouise. Your g-grandfather John and his brother Louison's land is what Ste Rose proper is sitting on now. The Church and cemetery property I believe was at first Jean Baptiste's because it is the land between John and Louison's, but he allowed the Church and the priest to get that land because he had already started a cemetery on it. So he, Jean Baptiste, got land south of Louison instead, just south of where Hwy 5 is now. I am just now studying RC Church history to chase this down, as to why the Church got that land which was Jean Baptiste's. Another Western Land grant went to Madeline Spence near where Spence Lake is now, and another to John Spence, Junior I believe. All that information is available online, the section-township-range of each. Spence Lake was named after your g-grandfather John, was it not? If you want to order the reel numbers for JB Sr and his wife Marie Roulette, I can get them later on this week or next. The reel numbers are online but are tricky to find because there are several Jean Baptiste Spences and several Marie-Marguerite Roulettes.
Your g-grandfather John was my g-grandfather Jean Baptiste's younger brother. JB was born in 1835, and his brothers in 1853 and 1856. They were much younger than he was. In fact JB's first son JB (Sam) was born in 1853 too, just as old as his uncles. The second son JB was younger, born in 1864. He is that baby you mention, that was baptised in 1864 at St Francois Xavier, when he was three months old. I got that information from the Archdiocese of Winnipeg.

Alexander Holt alias Spence

Can someone please help me. I have been doing research on my dad's side of the Spence Family. We had hit a brick wall with Charles Spence. We finally found his mother and father's names in a family bible. We did more searching with their names and found that we are not Spence's after all. Charles's father was Alexander (Holt) Spence, born 1758 in Maryland and died 1800 in Sussex County, Delaware. Alexander's mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Holt who was born 1745 in Maryland and died 1791 in Sussex County, Delaware. She married James Spence, Sr. sometime before Nov. 14, 1769. Alexander took the Spence name. I am trying to find out if Holt is a maiden name of Elizabeth or a married name. If it is a maiden name, I need to find who the father actually was of Alexander to find our real name.
I wonder how many people this has actually happend to and they don't know it. Any info would be appreciated. Please email me at teacheriam@verizon.net. Thanks for any help, Marilyn Spence McMillan

Re: Jean Baptiste SPENCE (b. 1811 NW Territories) m. Marie MATWEWIN

Hi there, I too have done extensive research on Jean Baptiste and Marie. One thing I can add is a parish record from Ste. Rose de lima Parish in which they have a burial record for Marie Roulette. She died on October 22, 1903 at the age of 80 (this could be a guess)This record confirms yours. According to an old history book which wa written by the first french metis settlers that arrived in Ste. Rose in June 1989 they were welcomed by 3 brothers, John, Louison, and Jean Baptiste who had come from Sandy Bay. Their grandfather/father was buried where the present cemetry is along with some children. There were 3 Jean Baptiste and they were referred to as the old one, the big one, and the little one. John Spence died on September 1, 1915 in Waterhen at age 65. I am the great grandson of John Spence and Madeleine Lacouette dit Wesawok, grandson of Andrew Spence and Louisa Campbell, son of Rodrick Spence and Martha Klyne. I am Edward Spence. I have been unable to link Jean Baptiste to any orkneymen through HBC records etc. One other possibility is a baptism record which has a Baptiste Spence an adult Indian at an Indian Settlement about 1838 where the missionaries came on behalf of the HBC to baptise poor Indians. Could this be our Wechemash(other spellings I have come across, Weecheemass, Wichewask) being baptized and given a christian name? One other reference I have yet to check out is a Joseph Spence, b circa 1772, Harray, Orkney. Entered service 1790. From 1808-1811 he was in charge at Indian Lake in the Churchill District. In his journals an
entry for June 27, 1811 records his journey to Churchill where he recounts "Last night passed a gang of Northern Indians with whom I left my Companion (his wife) and 2 of the youngest of my children, the other 3 I took along with me. When he sailed home from York Factory on the Eddystone in 1811, he was accompanied by a son and a daughter. When he returned in 1812 there is no record of his having children with him. Nor any record of him meeting up with his past country wife. Many of my records have Wechemash born in 1811 along the North Saskatchewan River, NWT.
This could be another coincidental timeline? Joseph's appearance is described as 5'6", dark complexion.
Joseph married Sally Jefferson in 1823 and had a son, John Clarke Spence and a daughter, Crawford, baptized in 1823. He died in 1856. Not uncommon to not acknowledge halfbreed
children. If anyone can shed any light on this or add to it I would be grateful. I have been unable to link Jean Baptiste to any of the other Spence families except their own either. I have been working on this for 20 years off and on so it would be great to get past this wall. I have all the reference material regarding their scrip records but have yet to send for them so if you would like to share a copy with me that would be great. I have John and Madeleines records, and many, many others, just not the one on Jean Baptiste and Marie Roulette.
I, too, am seeking a connection to the Spence family from Ohio. My McKell family lived in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio from the 1820s. A family historian wrote that there were some "cousins from Ireland" named Spence who lived in Chillicothe at the time of the American Civil War. These Spences included John, Jim, and Mag (Margaret?) Spence. Some or all of these Spences were reported to have later relocated to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where they operated a glassware and crockery business.

Since my last posting, I have found backup scrip records for Jean Baptiste Spence Sr. His alias/nickname was "Weechamash". I got his file from the Archives in Ottawa, through inter-library loan. I also got his wife's scrip records from Ottawa, Marie Rolette (Roulette) Matwewenin. Jean Baptiste Spence Sr declared that his father was an Orkney man and his mother was Tche-tchit, a Swampee Cree woman from Cumberland House. He declared he was born in 1807. I have searched Hudson Bay post records for Cumberland House for that time period but have not come across any Spence person working there except for James Spence. However, some researchers say that George Spence and Catherine (Cree) were his parents. No proof of that yet.

Walter Spence of Canada (b1896)

Hello, I'm looking for some hints on how to find my ancestor Walter Spence.

Originally from Yorkshire in England, he emigrated to Canada (into Halifax) in 1923. According to family he then served with the Canadian forces in WW2 (and he dropped in to see them while on leave in the UK, and that's how they knew he was still alive!) and then he went back to Canada after the war and not much is known after that. I don't even know what province he lived in, except that family think "it's one of the ones in the middle". He is believed to have been a bachelor.

I'd be very grateful for any ideas of where I could look for more information, espcially given that I don't know the province.

Many thanks!

Spence from VA

I have been trying to find info on my 3great grandfather, his son was James Newton Spence, born 1963/1964 in Virginia (I believe) and was married to Nannie Catherine Wilson.

The Spence I am looking for is Hugh Spence. (His daughter's obit says Huey).

my info is sketchy...he was in Revolutionary war but died of TB shortly after. His wife's name is either Sarah Rebecca (or Rachael) Mundy or Holloway. Their children were (in order of birth) James Newton, Nan, Henry, and Mag.

Mag married a Cahill. He also had 3 half-brothers... Will, Oliver and Spotford (last name Moore I believe).

After 6 months of searching I am at my wits end! If you have any of these names in your tree please contact me.

(info was obtained from 80+ year old great aunt many years ago, so some info may be wrong)

Thanks!
Sandy
caiovenezia@gmail.com
Can you provide me with information on how my uncle James Spence can participate in the Spence DNA project? I recently purchased a paternal DNA kit from Ancestry.com and he should have it within the next week. I have been able to trace our Spence line to Richard D. Spence born in NC around 1818 and married Elizabeth Rose of TN. The earliest record I can find for them in 1860 census in Conway CO, Arkansas. I am hopeful the DNA will help us make additional connections. Thansk for any information you can provide.
