Please contact me directly at janhaan@suddenlink.net. I want to share a more direct source with you but do not want it publicly posted. My mother was a Spieker. Her grandfather was a brother to the father (John) of the John you are seeking. The son of John and Carrie is named Luverne not Laurence.

Glad to hear from you. I have several questions
1) John's birth/death. I have b. 1894, but then found this SS record.
JOHN SPIEKER
SSN 481-10-7081 Residence: 50309 Des Moines, Polk, IA
Born 12 Sep 1894
Died Mar 1975
Is this him?
2) I have that Carrie died in MInnesota Feb 1971. Did they then bring her back to Iowa to be buried? WHen did she marry H. Peterson? I have a note that he was much older than her, but don't have any of his birth/date info.
3) Exactly where do you fit in?

I have...
son - Laurence b. 1923 Minnesota
daughter - Shirley Jean b. Oct 3 1924, in Minnesota She married a Backous???? Which one (I have other Backous in my tree). I have Shirley's children as
Colleen Gail, b. Detroit,Mich., Oct.28, 1954
Ginger Irene, b. Anchorage,Alaska, March 26, 1956
Byron Charles,Jr, b. Cloquet, Minn., Nov. 10, 1959

Thanks for any help you can give.

I haven't read the message boards in a long time so this replay is delayed and you may have already heard from someone on your inquiry. I am from the Spieker line that you are researching and I have been in contact with John and Carrie's son who lives in Texas. I'd be happy to let me know that you are looking for info. By the way Carrie married again after John died to a Henry Peterson. John and Carrie are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Aplington, Butler Co., IA.

Reicks-Spieker Wedding, Carroll, Iowa 1896

I translated the following two articles from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa between about 1874 and 1920. Both articles were published in the same paper. The first was in a section dealing with general news around the area, and the second was in a section on news from the town of Willey. They were published on Friday, 22 May 1896:

FIRST ARTICLE:

Wilhelm Reicks and Miss Anna Spieker were joined in marriage Tuesday morning in Saints Peter and Paul Church by the Reverend Father Nacke. The bridegroom is the youngest son of the deceased Theod. Reicks of Roselle, and the bride a daughter of Mr. Anton Spieker of Pleasant Valley Township. Both persons are honored and treasured among all their acquaintances, and everyone is pleased at the good fortune of the young newlyweds. The wedding party took place at the home of the bride’s parents in grand style. The innumerable invited guests enjoyed delicious food and drink, which naturally was present in abundance and of excellent quality. A dance floor was also constructed, and care was taken in every respect to ensure that all guests had a turn of their own. Everyone departed late and all were amazed that the happy hours went by so quickly. The Demokrat also wishes the young couple happiness and blessings upon which all depends, since indeed where Peace and Harmony prevail, there lie also the blessings of God.

SECOND ARTICLE:

Willey
. . . .
Tuesday this week Wm. Reicks and Anna Spieker were married by Father Nacke of Carroll. After the wedding the couple went to the home of the bride’s parents where the wedding reception was celebrated in true German style. To the newlywed couple our most sincere good wishes.
The Spiekers came from a town near Steinheim called Rolfzen (sometimes spelled Rolfsen). My Reineke family came from Steinheim. My great great grandparents were Johann Caspar Reineke and Maria Spieker who married in Jasper County in 1869, and then moved to Carroll County. I have collected census docs from Jasper and Carroll Counties in Iowa. I also have copies of birth and marriage records for Spieker, Meyenberg and Schrader and other names in the family tree going back to the early to mid 1700s. I have mailed several people a copy of the stuff I have and would gladly mail you one also. It is still a rough first draft, but someday I hope to get it bettert organized. Please e-mail me directly at david_reineke@admin.state.ak.us and we can exchange addresses. --Dave Reineke

Deb: I just read your second message. I get my Fred Spiekers confused. Maybe your death certificate could clear it up. My birth records have a Fred Spieker born 6 Oct 1856 to Joseph Spieker and Elisabeth Schrader in Rolfzen/Steinheim. However, a lot of people have Fred born 18 Sep 1858. I think somewhere, his birth date got confused. I also THINK I have a birth record for Theresa Dubbert in Rolfzen for 1860. Is that the same person? Please e-mail me. Also, I would love a good copy/scan of any photos you have. One of my projets is collecting old photos of these people on my computer so I can put together a book someday.--Dave Reineke

Your Welcome. I look at all Dubbert information. It is a small family, so I am always looking for connections. Our family goes back to Klockow, and Juergen Dubbert in the 1700s. This is a little northwest of Berlin, in the Muritz area. Malchin is near by. Let me know if you make a connection.

I am related to the Dubberts, and I am not even sure if I am to this one, but I think all the Dubberts came from one area, but have not located that yet, other than my area, which is Klockow, German, a little northwest of Berlin, in the Muritz area, near a town call Malchin.

I found this info on Ellis Island information site. It is free, but I think it is ellisislandrecords.com Not sure how good my memory is. Once in there you might have to register, but it is free. It only cost if you want official copies of the records. Let me know if this does not work, and I will go looking for the site again. I just pulled for all Dubberts and got the listing. Then clicked on it, and on the left hand side it ask if I want to see the original record. The records are usually two pages, which is how I found who they were visiting I think.

Have you tried looking in German's to America and locating when they came to the US? Then have you tried to check for them in the City Directories. Not sure if they had them, but I grew up near Toledo, and it was a far size city.

City Directories can be very helpful.

Marlene

Spieker-Williams Wedding, Carroll, Iowa, 1910

I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa between about 1874 and 1920. I do not have the exact date of publication, but my best estimate is that it was published on Friday, 21 January 1910. I have also added some notes at the end:

SPIEKER-WILLIAMS

On Tuesday morning Mr. Joseph Spieker and Miss Emma Williams were married in the local Saints Peter and Paul Church by Rev. Father Jos. Kuemper. Mathias Spieker, a brother of the groom, and Miss Laura Williams, a sister of the bride, served as witnesses. After the Mass, there was a reception in the home of the bride, to which only the closest family and neighbors were invited.

The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Spieker of Grant Township, and the bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Williams of the Fourth Ward in this town.

The young people will move to the Anton Spieker farm in Grant Township; Mr. and Mrs. Spieker plan to retire to Carroll in a few weeks.

The newlyweds have embarked on a honeymoon trip to Nebraska where they will visit the families of Wilhem Williams and B. Reicks.

Our congratulations.

NOTES: The article says the Spieker farm was in Grant Township, although I am fairly certain it was in the northwest corner of Pleasant Valley Township. Some other information I have says that the wedding was on 18 January 1910.
SPIEKER NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS, CARROLL COUNTY, IOWA

I translated these short newspaper articles from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published weekly in Carroll, Iowa from about 1874 to about 1920. I have added a few short clarifications in brackets:

11 August 1911
Mr. and Mrs. Anton Spieker have these days enjoyed a visit by the Bernard Reicks family of Petersburg, Nebraska.

15 December 1911
Mr. John Spieker of Canute, Oklahoma on Wednesday evening arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Spieker, in order to spend the holidays with his parents. Mr. Spieker has lived now for four years in Oklahoma where he likes it quite well.

12 January 1912
On Tuesday Morning at St. Mary's Church in Willey, Mathias Spieker, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Spieker, married Miss Maria Gute, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gute, in whose home the wedding reception took place. The newlywed couple will relocate to Nebraska. We add our best wishes to the union.

9 February 1912
Mr. Fritz [Fred] Spieker enjoyed a visit in the middle of last week from his brother-in-law Mathias Strunk and his son from Newton Township.

1 March 1912
The families of Mat[hias] and Joseph Spieker of Pleasant Valley Township in the course of this week have relocated to Petersburg, Nebraska.

2 May 1912
Mrs. F. Lappe and Mrs. J. Reineke attended together the funeral of the deceased Mathias Strunk in Dedham on Saturday.

Hello--didn't know if you had seen the obits I posted on the Klocke and Lappe message boards for Theresia and Sophia.

On Amelia, I'm pretty sure she and her husband lived near Dedham in Newton Twp. SOMEWHERE I have an old German newspaper clipping about Matt Strunck's funeral being attended by some of our relatives. I THINK he was killed in an accident involving a car or train or something. Pretty sure he is buried in Dedham, but not certain. I'll try to find it.

I also have some census info for the family from 1910 and 1920:

The 1910 census for Newton Twp., Carroll Co. shows family of "Mattes Strunk" age 52 and Mollie, wife, age 40. Says married 24 years. Children: Joseph (23), Tony (22), Elisabeth (18), Mary (16), John (11), Bertha (6), and Mattie (4).

(Interestingly, the neighboring farm from the preceding page shows family of William and Mary Reineke, both 24 years old, married 1 year, with daughter Cecelia 5 months old.)

I'm assuming both Matt and Mollie died before 1920 because I did not see them in the census. There is a listing for Carroll City of the two youngest girls, Bertha (17) and Mattie (12) listed as "lodgers" in the home of Joseph and Mollie Donahue, 115 Adams St. Also, Tony (29) is listed as a boarder living with a family in Lidderdale.

I'll post more when I find it at home.

Joseph Spieker, Death Notice, Carroll County, Iowa 1889

I translated the following death notice for Joseph Spieker. It was originally published in Der Carroll Demokrat on Friday, 12 April 1889. Der Carroll Demokrat was a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa between about 1874 and 1918. Joseph Spieker was born in Rolfzen, Westphalia, Germany in 1819 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1869. The notice read as follows:

"Yesterday, Joseph Speaker, a long-time (Since 1874) resident of Carroll County, died in Pleasant Valley Township of internal injuries which he received last Saturday through a fall from a wagon. Speaker and three others were going to return home from Carroll. They all had taken their places in their seats, one of which was very rickety. Suddenly, the one on which Speaker was sitting raised up. Thereby, the seat tipped over and Speaker fell to the ground. Speaker was already rather along in years, an industrious and competent farmer."

Note: The paper misspelled Spieker as "Speaker." I have attached a scanned copy of the original notice to this posting. You should be able to open it as a jpg file.
