Wow, after 9 years this thread is still running! Since I posted back then I have more information on my Co Down roots but still have not found the Spiers connection. To recap my great grandfather had Spiers as a middle name. He was baptised in Ballyesborough in May, 1854. His father was John McConkey (or M'Conkey) who died in Newtownards in 1893 and is buried in Greyabbey. His mother was Eliza Ann Carson who was born around 1813 and died in Newtownards in 1888 (also buried in Greyabbey). My hypothesis is that Eliza Ann's mother's maiden name was Spiers. If anyone sees a connection here please reply.
