A Spiller surname project has begun at Family Tree DNA recently. One of my male Spiller cousins has submitted his DNA for lineage research purposes. At present he is the only Spiller to submit a sample so we have no comparisons. It's a simple mail-in saliva test that you do yourself at home, but there is a fee required. We descend from George W. Spiller, b. 1788 in VA, m. 1808 Mary "Polly" Spears, dau. of James Spears of Buckingham Co., VA. George is found farming in Amherst, Nelson and Buckingham counties. He d. in 1830. Their children were James Madison (1810-1889), George Anderson (1818-1854), Samuel Fielding (1819-1859), Preston Hampden (1825-), and Sarah Ann (1828-1855). Three of the brothers migrated to Montgomery Co., TX in the 1840s.

George W. Spiller shows up in Buckingham Co., VA in 1807, a year before marrying Polly Spears. He was 19 years old at the time. From 1817-1826 he is found renting a plantation from the heirs of John Christian, dec'd. From 1825-1830, he is in Nelson Co. paying rent on the plantation of Samuel Jones Cabell, who was the son of Robert Jones/Cabell (stepson of Col. John Cabell of Green Hill Farm who possibly adopted Robert. Robert was a son of the first marriage of John Cabell's wife, Elizabeth Brierton).

We have researched this line for years and have not been able to document George W. Spiller's parents, although we have suspects. It would be wonderful to be able to compare the DNA of the other Spiller branches from Virginia and North Carolina.
