I do not have my John Spiller, who was born in 1741 in the Shannendoah Valley in what is now Virginia, United States, any further back so don't know if he ties in with your family or not.

There were Spillers in the UK and also in Switzerland.

Hi, I am a direct descendant of William Spiller 1796-1872 born Yarcombe, Devon and Mary Knight 1795-1866. There seems to be a great deal of information on the family up-to this point. What I can not do is to research their parents. I was wondering if there are any other descendants who could point me in the right direction of William and Mary.
Thank you - Jarrod

Found the marriage of Sarah SPILLAR/SPILLER in Nov 24 1752 to Richard SMITH in Essex Co MA (maybe Ipswich?). I think this might be Richard SMITH b Sep 28 1735 to Richard SMITH and Mary BROWNE who were m in 1732 in Essex Co MA.

Could not find any children listed for Richard and Sarah in the Vital Records of Essex Co, MA so I am speculating that they may have moved away.

Does anyone have any additional information on this family?

Chris
this is an old post, but I just saw it. John T. S. Spiller was the son of Jesse Spiller and Keziah Stockton. Keziah's first husband was John Tuffnell, a bell maker. John T Spiller married Mary Jane Walker in Williamson Co., IL. I don't know Mary Jane's parents. There were 2 or 3 distinctly different Walker families in Williamson Co. John had 4 spouses--Eliza James marrie 2 Jan 1876; then Melissa Southerland (married 10 Apr 1884; Mary Jane Walker (married 6 may 1888) and finally Eliza T Burnett (married 29 Mar 1899) According to what I have, Rollie was his only child. If you have more on Rollie, I would like to hear about it. I have lots more on the Spiller family and yes the family did come from TN--Robertson Co.,
Martha

You said that Elijah Spiller's wife was Susannah Duncan. Where did you get this information and what is the degree of validity? This is the first time I have seen speculation on her maiden name. This is interesting because Elijah'a half-sister, Lydia, married John Duncan. Is there a connection? This would be a big breakthrough for many Spiller researchers. Do you have a list of their children. I think I have identified 7, but that is not all. Did you know that Elijah died in Lawrence Co., in 1847?
Thanks for any ifo you share!!!

Re: William Spiller and Cornelia Holladay

Re: William Spiller and Cornelia (or Cornelius as it appears in the Illinois Marriage Index from the Illinois Archives)—This couple is a puzzle. I have not found them together anywhere but the marriage record. I can't find Cornelia or Eddie in the 1970 census. The only William who fits this profile is William G, b. 1 Feb 1849 in Moscow , Illinois. This William was the son of William D Spiller, (born 1810 in Robertson Co., TN and his wife Emily Jane Allen (b. 1813 in Wilson Co., TN). William D was the son of William Spiller (b. 12 Dec 1769 in TN) and Winifred Benson (b. abt 1773, probably in TN).
Back to William G.—He was living with his brother John Spiller in Carbondale, Jackson Co., IL in the 1870 Census. He married Elma Bartholomew on 31 March 1872 in Jackson Co., IL—William and Elma had 3 children, Adelburt LeRoy (who became a lawyer, Bertha who married Alex Andrews) and Earl, who became an auto mechanic. William G became a merchant, and died in Carbondale. 9 Aug 1931. I have a copy of his death certificate and it says nothing about Cornelia or another family. It just dawned on me to try to get a copy of an obituary. I will try that, but it may be 6weeks before I can get that (vacation!!)
David Young wrote a monumental work on the Spiller family and he thought Cornelia died when Albertie was born, leaving William free to marry Elma. However you say that Cornelia married Scott Mc Donald in Missouri. Do you have positive proof of this? I did find Scott McDonald and Nilia in the 1910 census of Little prairie, Pemiscot Co., MO. Is this them?
What happened to the kids? It doesn’t make sense that both parents abandoned the kids. And if this is the case, there should be a divorce decree somewhere.
As I said, they are quite a puzzle. If you figure it out, please post it!! If I find a obit, I will post it.
Re: John T. Spiller

Hi Karen , Oh my yes, I can expand on Jesse. Probably the easiest and quickest way is to copy a posting I made in 2006 about Benjamin Spiller. Jesse or Jessie was one of Benjamin’s children. Here is the url for the original posting and the url for the posting about the family of Benjamin’s brother, Elijah.
Benjamin’s post: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ilwillia/2006-...
Elijah’s post: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/spiller/2006-0...
I do have lots more material on the family. I have done additional research since then. I also was helped greatly by David Young who has done marvelous research on the Spiller family.

If after digesting this you want more, I will try to help.
Martha

BENJAMIN SPILLER FAMILY OF TENNESSEE AND ILLINOIS

I have been trying to sort out the Spillers of Southern Illinois in 2005. My gg-grandmother was a Spiller. A number of researchers over the years have worked on this family and developed lists of family members. I have spent hours tracing families through census, marriage and death records. Now I would like to put this out in cyberspace. I am going to start with the Benjamin Spiller family since this is my line. And will follow with the other brothers—and maybe some of the grandchildren.

The Spiller family in Southern Illinois started early and is quite extensive—not only those carrying the name, but the many families that married Spiller women. The first Spiller migrating to Illinois was Elijah who was in Illinois when the 1818 census was taken for statehood. (So much for the story of the wagon train with all 4 families coming from Tennessee.) There was 1 male over 21 years, and 7 other white persons with no persons of color or slaves. He was also present in Franklin Co., Illinois for the 1820 census, with 3 males under 10 yrs., and 1 male over 26 and under 45 yrs. Also, were 2 females under 10 yrs, 1 female between 10 and 16 yrs, and 1 female between 26 and 45 yrs. Elijah had been joined by his brother, William (with 13 children in the household) and sisters Nancy (married to Abraham Tippy) and Lydia (married to John Duncan). Brothers Benjamin and Warrenton King (III) remained in Robertson Co., Tennessee. By 1830, all
four Spiller brothers were living in Southern Illinois.

Family of Benjamin Spiller

BENJAMIN SPILLER (WARRENTON KING (II)3, WARRENTON KING (I)2, WILLIAM(1)1) was born Abt. 1780, and died Bef. 24 Sep 1838 in Williamson County, IL. It is recorded in Book B, pages 128-129. There are numerous other notes of Spillers in Robertson Co. The notes also say the Spillers lived on Sulphur Fork of the Red River.

There exists a case in the Williamson County Court records where Lucinda Worsham, widow of Simeon Spiller sues Rebecca Spiller (widow of Warrenton B. Spiller) and the other heirs of Benjamin Spiller for partition of a piece of land from Benjamin’s estate. In that suit, it states that Benjamin had 12 children. Eleven of the children are named in that suit and the husbands of the daughters are named. A transcription of this case was found in the files of my mother after her death. There was no acknowledgement as to the person or source of that transcription. In August, 1997, I found the original documents of this case in the County Clerk's office and verified the transcription. If anyone wants a copy of this transcription, I will provide it. The 12th child who is not named in the case is my gg-grandmother, Olive Spiller who was the first wife of A.J.
I'd like to do this when I have some extra $. I believe I am a descendent of these Spillers as well. My father is John Dale Spiller and his father was John Boone Spiller (Canadian Texas). I know the family previously came from Virgina and I had two relatives that went to VMI and fought at the battle of New Market. I''d like to know more.
steven.spiller@sce.com

Thanks for your work. I have not found Cornelia either in 1870 or 1880. Do have her in 1850 & 1860. She and husband Winfield Scott McDonald were in the 1900 [under Winfield S] and 1910 [under Scott] Pemiscot Co. Missouri censuses. She died there 7-15-1912 of malarial fever. Her death certificate is a free download at the Missouri Vital Records site. The only thing I have on William is the marriage record. In 1880 their daughter Albertie was with her brother Robert Holladay in Williamson Co.IL, and Eddie was with her brother Van Holliday in Jackson Co. IL.. I am assuming this is the same Edward Spiller [1920 Oregon census] who was the father of Van H. Spiller who died in 1968. Probably named his son after the Holliday Uncle who raised him. I have no idea why Eddie and Albertie were not with their mother, or who her 3rd child was. The marriage certificate with Scott McDonald lists her as Mrs. Cornelia F. Holiday, not Spiller. I could email you a copy of it. The censuses say she had 3 children, two living as of 1900 and 1910. As far as I know, none of her children were by Scott. What I have is at Worldconnect. Thanks again. Steve McDonald

Would like information about the William Spiller that married Cornelia Holladay in Jackson County, Illinois on September 7, 1867. Their children were Edward Spiller, born about 1868, and Alberta Spiller, about 1871. There was possibly a third child. The two children were living with different Holladay uncles in the 1880 Census. Cornelia married Scott McDonald on June 30 1880 in Cape Girardeau Missouri.

The company that my male Spiller cousin tested at (Family Tree DNA) has another site called YSearch, where anyone can upload their yDNA profile, no matter what company did their profile ... for comparison to other profiles. You can read about it at this link: http://www.ysearch.org/

So, you can have your yDNA (Spiller males) tested anywhere you like and then upload to this FREE site for comparisons. My Spiller male cousin's profile is on this ysearch site. Find it by doing a surname search. Doesn't mean much without comparisons to other Spiller surname males, though.

My hope is that other Spiller males will have their DNA profiles done and uploaded to the YSearch site. We can then compare the results; document the lines and see where the combination of genetics and genealogy takes us into the past ... hopefully to a common Early American ancestor or family; possibly back even further.

Karen

Steven:

I think I found your grandfather, John Boone Spiller, on the 1920 census in Hemphill Co., TX as a son of Hollis B. Spiller (whom I have in my database).

If your great grandfather was Hollis Barclay Spiller, then you are a cousin of mine. Hollis' father was James Madison Spiller, b. 27 Jan 1810 in Nelson or Buckingham Co., VA. He m. Caroline Kyle on 3 Aug 1841 in Botetourt Co. VA. James died 23 Oct 1889 in Botetourt Co. Some of his sons when to VMI. I have LOTS of information on James and his family. He was my GGGG Grandfather's brother and left a lot of letters, documents, ledgers, etc... which are now archived in the College of Wm. & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. I've been studying his documents for the last several years. James stayed in VA and ran large plantations after the death of their mother, Mary "Polly" Spears (1793-1848). He was also a Lock Builder on the James River. The other 3 brothers went to TX as well as some of James' sons .... son, Hollis Barclay Spiller and son, George William Spiller (George settled in Jack Co., TX). Fortunately, we have a lot on the descendants of this line. Our problem is with the ancestors of James' dad, George W. Spiller (1788-1830). My cousin has provided the DNA profile for the males in our line but there are other Spiller lines that we need DNA profiles for comparison and to prove whether or not they all descend from the same early American Spiller family or whether we have multiple Spiller lines in the U.S.

Steven, if you are, in fact, a descendant of James Madison Spiller then your DNA profile should match my cousins....BOTH being descendants of George W. Spiller (1788-1830) and Mary "Polly" Spears.

I'd love to see a DNA profile from one of the LA Spillers, the GA Spillers, the SC Spillers, the IL Spillers, and the 'other' TX Spillers who settled in Limestone Co., TX.!! Maybe one day we'll know if they are all connected and to whom in early VA or MD.

Steven, I hope to hear back from you to compare notes on our Spiller lines.

Karen Lawless

Re: Elijah and Susanna Spiller

Sorry, I only have wife's maiden name on someone else's 'speculation'. I apologize for raised hopes! I should have qualified that statement to show it's just a working theory.

I have only identified 6 kids, although as you pointed out, census records indicate that there may have been as many as 8.

For Rev. Elijah's death date, I only had an estimate of Bet. 1840-1850 in IL...thanks! How did you come to that determination?

I descend from George W. Spiller (10 Aug 1788-Aug 1830) and Mary "Polly" Spears (1793-1848), who lived in Buckingham, Amherst and Nelson Counties, VA. There are no other Spillers around except a second George Spiller on the 1810 Buckingham Co., VA census, whose entry is at the very bottom of the torn page....only his name and the fact that he had 2-3 very young sons in 1810 is visible, the rest being lost by the page being tattered. grrr Other family names around them on this census indicate that they may have lived in the Wreck Island Creek area of Buckingham Co., VA at the time. However, we've not identified the 2nd George Spiller on this census. Other than that, there are no other Spiller families in the vicinity at the time. So, the million dollar question is which line did our George W. Spiller come from?

The son I descend through, George Anderson Spiller (1818-1854), emigrated to TX in 1848, which is where I live today. I'm 3rd generation Spiller researcher and my mother and I research all the Spiller lines in our hope of determining George W.'s parents and possibly the interconnection between the various Spiller lines that migrated out of VA. My George W. could've been from the King William group or the Prince William group. He also could've been the son of one of the SC Spillers. And are these various groups that migrated out of VA all connected? DNA studies would help. I can't find any willing Spiller males to do a comparison with my cousin's DNA profile.

The area of TX (Montgomery Co., TX) that George Anderson Spiller settled in 1848 is the EXACT area where John Spiller(s) (who was m. to Frances Conger) settled had settled in 1835. And, when I say the "exact" area, I am talking about the same land survey; same very small community. With him was Warrington Spiller(s), b. 13 Jan 1767, d. 27 Jul 1847 in Mexia, Limestone Co., TX and a younger William Spiller(s). John died in Montgomery Co., while Warrington/Warrenton and William moved north to Limestone Co., TX along with other settlers of the Montgomery Co. area....as if they all knew each other....friends or kin? I believe this Warrington to be the same one that is found in Washington Co., VA in the 1780s and early 1790s. Raleigh Duncan, gf of John P. Duncan, Jr., had a plantation in Washington Co., VA as early as 1786 when he died there which 'could' explain Warrington's presence there. John P. Duncan, Jr.'s application for pension for service in the Rev. War (claim No. R-3126, 1841, denied because service was against Indians) refers to his sister but doesn't name her.

So, therein lies my interest in the IL line of Spiller and Duncan.

Karen Lawless

I have info in my database that the family of Rev. Elijah Spiller, who m. Susannah Duncan, settled in Jackson Co., IL. before 1830. According to my compiled data, in 1830 he is shown to have 8 kids and was back in Williamson Co., IL by 1840.

There was also a Warren Spiller in Jackson Co., IL ca.1840.

1850: Jackson Co., IL census shows 2 entries.
The first is for William B. Spiller, b. 1813, TN (also found in 1860 census below).
The second is William G. Spiller, b. ca. 1841 IL, who is a son of Warren H. Spiller, b. 1811 TN, a Cabinet Maker and Elizabeth, b. 1815 TN.

1860: Jackson Co., IL census shows 1 William Spiller(s), a Carpenter. He's in Carbondale, Jackson Co., IL., b. 1813, TN. He's marred to Elizabeth, b. 1817 in IL, and they have 4 children living in the household: Moses, 21, Lydia, 18, Mary, 12 and Elizabeth, 5, all born in IL.

1870: Wm. Spiller, b. 1841, IL, in DeSoto, Jackson Co., IL, m. Henrietta, appears to be, based on dob, the Wm. G. Spiller, son of Warren who is found on the 1850 census. Although in 1870 he's a Saloon Keeper.

Hope these clues help.

It would be helpful if you could tell us in what country or area you are looking. I am not familiar with Yarcombe or Churchstanton.

In order to get information, you really need to give us all a little more to go on.

Spillers, Spiller in Louisiana (AL & GA) I have hit a brick wall, help!!!

I have hit a brick wall in my geneology search and perhaps someone can help connect a few dots or fill in a few blanks.
I am look for information about Willie Mack Spillers. He is the grandfather of Maggie, Sandra, Robert, Mack and Mert, Charles, Sammy Jack, Sue, and Kathy Spillers (parents Mack Theodore "Dago" and Lealer Mae Patton Spillers.) He had a twin sister who married Willie Gore in Columbia and they had several children: Billy Ray, Fred, James Lee, Robert and Myrtle.
Willie Mack Spillers was born Sept. 1876 and died at 99 years old.
He was married to Mollie Swift, --Nugent, and --Bamburg.
His father was born in Louisiana and his mother was born in Alabama... who were they?
____________________________________________________________
Also Sophronia (Sofrona/Froney) Swift
She was the mother of Mollie, Ollie, and Buzzie Swift. She was the mother in law of Willie Mack Spillers and raised his son Mack Theodore "Dago" after Mollie died in childbirth until she died. She was buried on the side of the old Filhiol Watkins Indian Mound just south of Fondale.
She was born March 1852 (or 1846-- the SSDI) in Louisiana. Her dad was born in Alabama and mother in Georgia. It is reported that she was a cherokee indian, which the only information I can find about the Cherokee coming to Louisiana is that the Cherokee with any money migrated west from Alabama before the government eradication began, so there are not many records. I do not know whether Swift is her married name or if she never married, as I cant find anything about her husband. Dago Spillers had said that his grandfather was a trapper.

Please email me at Scrapn4mymiracle@aol.com if you can add any clues to this family tree.
Thanks in advance!
