The Spilman name can be traced back to Jamestown and there is some conflict about that Spilman. The Jamestown Diaries indicate that he died without issue(children), but there is also some indication that he was "married" to Martha Fox a
Powhatan woman. There is no written record of a marriage from 1606. This Henry Spilman was a young teenager when he arrived in Jamestown. After his death his Brother Thomas came to America from England to settle his estate. There is no proof that this Henry Spilman was directly to Sir Henry Spilman of England, but he may have been a nephew. With the Spilman family arriving in the 1600, it most likely that they married Native American women. I had a Great Uncle who's name was William Thomas Ross Spilman. There are no other males names Ross in the Spilman Family, However his mother's family is from Tennessese and it appears that there was a connection to John Ross (Last leader of the Cherokee before the trail of tears)through one of his sisters.

There are 2 Spilman/Spillman Families one is English the other is German. I have no information on the Family from Germany. It is difficult to trace these families and keep them seperate as they used the same first names and both were in basically the same area of Kentucky. Which family are you researching. The James, Robert and Thomas Spilman you mentioned are English, I have never found a Robert in the German family prior to about 1850.
The info I have on Samuel Spillman is that his paretns were Hiram Spilman and Elizabeth Kitchen. He was born in 1835 in KY and died in 1925. He was probably in the Civil War and there should be military records on him. Both families followed a similar emmigration route and endednup in Indianna and Iowa.

I have a copy of the Spilman Papers which were published in 1965, it was a private publishing and copies of the actual are very difficult to obtain. I hope to develop a name index for the work, and have just began the project. If you write to me direct I am willing to check for you. The material is very confused because the both the English and German families used the same first names.
The reason I have listed this the way I have is that there are at least 3 other John Spil(l)mans so I thought it would be easier this way.

My ancestor, Simeon B. Spillman left an obit in Johnson Co., IN saying he was born in 1824 in Georgetown, KY and moved to Johnson Co., IN when he was 14 (abt 1838). His death certificate lists his father as William Spillman born in MD and Sarah Deering born in KY. A Robert Spillman moved to Johnson Co about 1839. He seems to be the Robert Spillman who was a son of Henry Spillman and Ann Tapp and he had an older brother named William, who died before Oct 1849 according to some sources. I cannot find a corroborating document. Does anyone know anyting about this William Spillman, oldest son of Henry Spillman and Ann Tapp Spillman?

Spillmans of Westport, Henry Co., KY 1820's

I am trying to sort out the Spillmans of Henry Co.
In Feb 17, 1824 Thomas Elley and wife Patsey sold plots 57 and 58 in Westport, then Oldham Co., KY to Nancy Spillman for $50
Jan 11, 1825 Nancy Spillman "in consideration of said (William) Lowden supporting her during her natural life and for the further consideration of one dollar to her in hand paid by the said Lowden" sold plots 57, 58 and 79 in Westport, Oldham Co., KY
Jan 2, 1828 Ann Spillman sells to James Hill of Shelby Co., KY these exact same three plots, 79, 57 and 58 in Westport for $350.
In 1820 there were three Spillman families in Westport, Henry Co., KY (1) Charles Spillman was the son of William Spillman and Mary Brown. His brother William was the grandfather of Mariah Spillman who eventually married a son of William Loudon. (2) Jacob Spillman may have had a wife named Sarah who could have been the Sarah O'Neal who married a Jacob Spillman in Nelson Co., KY in 1795. He is still in Westport in 1830. (3) George Spillman who has teenage daughters, He disappears by 1830. Can anyone identify him? I am wondering if Nancy Spillman was his widow.
Ann Spillman is supposedly Ann Tapp Spillman who was the widow of Henry Spillman of Culpeper Co., VA Does anyone know how she is connected to Nancy Spillman?
Any information on this family would help.
Who is C.C.'s Parents? brothers, sisters? Children?
If I have this correct:
C. C. Spillman was born about 1816 in Indiana.

C. C. married Sarah Jane Gilpin. (this was her second marriage I think) Sarah was born about 1833 in Kentucky. They had two children: Mary E. and George Washington.

George Washington Spillman was born in Sep 1859 in Indiana. (Can not find death records for George) George married Caroline Riggs on 4 Apr 1887 in Posey county, Indiana. George next married Lena G. Darnell, daughter of James Darnell and Rachel Benner, on 30 Jun 1897 in Posey county, Indiana. Lena was born on 2 Mar 1871 in Kentucky and died on 8 Jan 1960 in Orange County, California at age 88. They had seven children: George Edward, Son, Helen, Mary, Walter, Maria "Dorothy," and Madeline.

Any help with this family would be great.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Tonnya
