Re: Spiro family

Beth:

Please don't let me startle you. I have a Google Alert on "William R. Ronay" and it announced an inquiry on "Spiros and how I'm related." After a little bit of reading and clicking back and forth, I found your response of May 17, 2001 to Daniel.

My father, Henry, was Daniel's uncle. My grandfather, William Rosenthal Ronay (Vilmos), married to Regina Freud Ronay. I think doing all of the linking, this makes you and me very distant cousins.

I have always been curious about where "I came from". No one would tell me. Henry's wife, Evelyn Mathews Ronay, was a Gentile from Fairmont/Clarksburg and the family was against their marrying from the beginning. The did in 1942. I was born on August 27, 1943 in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Ronay side literally ostracized Henry (Janos Hendrydk) from any and all relationships. I never knew my Ronay grandparents. All I have is a broken away section of a tintype photo taken in Hungary with the likeness of Marie, Henry, William R. and Regina. Have asked many times of Daniel and his family to please let me know of the Ronay history...the response was a letter close to yours received from Dan.

One of my hobbies is ham radio. I communicate with folks all over the world via short wave amateur radio bands. Have reached and communicated with 275 countries over the past nearly 25 years.

A few years back I spoke with a ham in/near Budapest and gave him both my surname and "Ronay". Oh, we were using Morse Code at the time...and I said "Name is 'Ronay'...Unique here." He responded "...'Rosenthal' almost rare here...'Ronay' like 'Smith' in U.S." So I guess I have much digging to do should I ever be in Hungary and have the luck to go to the right source.

Old tales from my Uncle Alex and Aunt Henrietta...and "almost" confirmed prior to Aunt Marie's death told of the Rosenthal group coming up from the Turkish, Ottoman area through Serbia and Croatia. "Ronay" was assumed from the area near Kiskunfelegyhaza controlled by an Austrian land baron/count of similar name.

William R., Regina, Henry and Marie landed in the Port of Baltimore in mid-1902 as best I can recall of the timeline. ALL of the families in the "common steerage" area were magically given the name of where they came from. Sassers, Rossers, Rosenthals...and several more families suffered the same fate. Found "Ronay" in Cozumel, Mexico; San Diego, CA; Buffalo, NY; San Antonio, TX; and even in Atlanta, GA (besides my ex-wife)!

No children with her or my wife, Camille, of 35+ years. So THIS particular branch/twig of the Ronay Family ends with my cremation in another three decades or so. If you want to see a thumbnail of where we live...go to http://events2000.com/billronay.

I do hope this arrives to you and you are able to respond.

In haste and hopes of your response,

"Cousin" Bill Ronay

Oh, the "R" initial is for Robert, not Rosenthal. This may have been yet another reason my Paternal Grandparents and surrounding family their backs on Henry and Evelyn.

Note: I have copied to Daniel and your father. Hope he sees it and communicates as well. The emails are eight years old...I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Regards,

Bill

W. R. "Bill" Ronay

The "Real" Buckhead, GA 30625-2700
