Hello
My name is Lynne Elizabeth Cox nee Spiby, I have been researching my Spiby family for about 5 years now and would appreciate some help with this please. I have always been of the opinion, that the surnames Spiby & Spivey whatever spelling variation are two completely different families. I have recently made a list of all the Spiby & Spivey surnames for 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns for the UK and noticed that there is county split of where members of the Spiby and Spivey families lived. On the whole the Spivey surname is common to Yorkshire, the Spiby surname is common to Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lancashire, 4 counties that are next-door to each other.
It was the miss-spelling of one of my relatives on the 1891 census George Spiby spelt Spivey age 59 born Wartnaby Leicestershire that has also made me think that both families are connected, in some way?
So my question is has anyone found on this list that their Spivey relative has previously been spelt as Spiby/Spibey/Spybey etc.
I have found on the IGI database a Silence Spiby born Huddersfield, Yorkshire about 1667 married 1684 Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
Any help or comments would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Lynne
