Jacob M. Splan was my grandfather. He came to the U.S. from Elizabethgrad, Russia (Kirovograd, Ukraine now) in 1882. He was born in 1869, so was only 13 in 1882. Two of his brothers came to the U.S. too, but eventually returned to Russia. They were Jewish and may have changed their name. Jacob Splan was a printer and is in the Cincinatti, Ohio directory for 1890-91. He moved to Chicago,IL. and married Ernestine Fischer in Nov. 1891. He had 6 children. I found him on the 1900 Cook Co., IL. census. He died in 1937 in Chicago. I am trying to find his naturalization papers. I have contacted other Splans who came from Ireland and settled in Canada and MI., but none of them are related. I want to try to trace back to Russia to any relatives that might still be there, or try to find out who Jacob's parents were.
