hi Charlotte:
I looked at the 1870 census entry that you mention.

Everybody is listed as being born in Virginia.

So my first line of Search was Slave owners in Virginia named Splawn. Did not find any in either 1860 or 1850. In fact there were very few slave owners named Splawn in either census if I located them all.

The North Carolina Splawn Slave owners did not live anywhere close to the VA state line (lived along the NC/SC state line.)

Occasionally, but not always, freed slaves took the surname of their previous owner.

There is a possibly that they were free persons of color.

So since that didn't work, the next item will be to locate the family in all the census following 1870. See if they always claimed to be born in Virginia.

Note that information in the census is only as good as the person giving it and the person writing it down. It may or may not be correct.

As I have time I'll look for other avenues for you.

While I have done some African-American research, I have not done a lot and virtually none before 1870.

I believe the University of South Florida, here in Tampa has an online database for African-American research and that there is one also based around Charleston, SC. These databases are not specific to the location where they are located.

Here's one: http://www.africanamericanancestors.org/;
Another one: http://uncg.libguides.com/afs;
U South Florida: http://www.africanaheritage.com/index.asp;
Magnolia Plantation, SC: http://www.lowcountryafricana.com/;
(don't include the colons when you copy.)
The above web sites will help you understand what may be available to help you.

More later.

Virginia Splawn Green

Hi Virginia,
Thank you so much for responding to my message.
In answer to your question, I am searching for my grandfather, Lee Splawn, born about 1871. I've learned through research that he and his parents were born in Virginia; he shows up in Harrisburg, PA around 1892, living with a fellow native of Virginia. So that's my time frame. I did locate one African American family in Virginia in the 1870 census, but since he was born in 1871, he was not listed. Also, the mother's name was different than his mother's name.
Well, Virginia, any guidance you can provide, I will appreciate very much.
Once again, thank you very much for your interest.
Charlotte Splawn Glover

hi Charlotte:
I am a "white" Splawn and have done quite a bit of research on them but very little on the African-American Splawns.

You haven't included a time frame which might help.

However, the Splawns that I know about are a South and North Carolina family. The first known one came into Wilmington, NC about 1740 or so.

And that family was in South Carolina by 1763. The records are sparse so it's hard to trace the family between 1783 and 1800.

This is known: one group moved apparently from South Carolina to Rutherford County, NC - some to the area that is present day Rutherford County and my ancestors to present day Polk County. From this group, members headed across TN, to AR, MO, and eventually ended up in the state of Washington.

Others went from South Carolina south westward and may be found in GA, Al, TX, etc.

There were African Americans named Splawn in Polk County census 1870 and after. I know that there were a few families in and around Asheville, NC in the last 40 years.

There are a fairly large representation of Splawns in Spartanburg County and perhaps Cherokee County; I don't know about Greenville.

I have not had occasion to search VA and PA and therefore can't comment on either white or black families in that area.

If you have some dates, even approximate ones, I may be able to make some suggestions for places to look.

Virginia Splawn Green

Hello. I've been working on my Splawn members in Ore., Wa and probably Idaho too for some time. I have nothing on Charles T. Splawn but considering his dob I wonder where he was born and who his parents were, very much. Strangely, I did not have this name in my index of so many Splawn members..Mary Splawn was my g gr grandmother who lived vicinity of Brownsville, Linn Co. Oregon. Many of my early pioneer resident (of Oregon) Splawn members left Linn county Oregon and move out and away...this included Bethena Splawn, Andrew Jackson Splawn (the author). I Would appreciate you keeping an open eye for Splawn members as you research other Splawn members. A good researcher on Splawn is Brenda Ab-something something close of babplan will show on her posting(s)-- so you'll notice her in the message boards and she's very informed and a good researcher, too.

here's the info i have
I don't know if this will help on your search for this Splawn family for your friend, but will give you this information. Did your Luther Splawn live in Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma. If so, this might be the right family.

James Splawn, originally from Rutherford Co., N.C., son of Edward Pinckney Splawn and Priscilla Jane King, had a daugther Lula, born around 1891/92 from his first marriage. In the 1900 Census of Tarrant Co., Texas you will find James and his daughter Lula living with his parents-census states he is a widower. James, then, is later found in Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma re-married with more children, the youngest being Luther E. Luther was born, according to SS records, 7 July 1918 and died 5 Feb. 1998, probably in Pottawahtomie Co., Oklahoma. There is a WWII Military Record for this Luther E. Splawn. He enlisted in the US Army on 27 Feb. 1942 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The race on the military record states: American Indian. Record states Luther is married at time of service. There were a number of brothers and sisters in Luther's family. You will find James and Bessie and Luther along with his siblings on the 1910 and 1920 Census of Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma. As stated previously, Lula with her father James are found in Tarrant Co., Texas census in 1900; she is not with her half-brother and sisters in 1910 or 1920 census; she has probably married by that time. I hope this information proves helpful in some way to you. Brenda
I do not know of your grandmother Ruby, but am interested in your post because my grandfather Lee Splawn, was born in Virginia and I can find no information about Virginia Splawns. Do you have any info regarding Splawns living in that area? I would truly appreciate anything you can share. Thank you.

Check the Washington State Digital Archives online. There are lots of Splawns listed. Just search for the last name.
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/

I am looking for a family line of Splawn's who came to Pennsylvania from Virginia. The names are Lee Splawn and he had a brother who moved to Washington DC and worked for the railroad as a porter, I think. Thank you for looking at this post and for any direction or feedback you can provide.

Hello,

I am a descendant of Missouri Splawn's; William David Splawn has a brother James L Splawn and a sister Nancy J Splawn - I have a photo of the three of them. Could this be the same as your James L Splawn?

~ Janice
