SPRINGERs in early Essex Co., New Jersey

I now have in my possession the will of a William SPRINGER, of Elizabeth, Essex Co., NJ, with the dates of 1769 and 1770. There are at least two Olliver/Oliver men named, Samuel and Jonathan. I haven't transcribed it yet, and it's pretty difficult to read from what I've skimmed over. I did recognize the word 'Raway' which I'm guessing must be Rahway, NJ also in Essex Co., NJ.

In the will William identifies his wife as Sarah.

Is there anyone who has info on this SPRINGER, or others from the same time and back, around Elizabeth or Rahway? Here is part of a post I made last year on another board:

********
New Jersey's Abstracts of Wills (1730-1750) and earlier have several references of FRAZEE and OLIVER folk related. At least two of these references also include the name SPRINGER.

1749 May 20 - Frazee, Mercy, of Essex Co Orphan upwards of 14 years. Samuel OLIVER, guardian. William SPRINGER, fellow bondsman.

Possibly the same Samuel OLIVER and William SPRINGER are mentioned as receiving payments after the death of Elizabeth FRAZEE c1748/49.

In 1712 a Denis SPRINGER is a witness to the will of Eliphalett FRAIZY (FRAZEE??).

It is assumed the FRAZEEs and OLIVERs intermarried after going through some of the will abstracts for NJ. I'm trying to see if the SPRINGERs also married in to this group from northern NJ.
************

The above Dennis Springer is probably the same one who is an adult in 1701 in the same area. He is often assumed to be the husband of Abigail Pack, and while she did marry a SPRINGER, no one can prove what her husband's first name was.

melissa

OK, I've been corrected and I agree:

His father was Jesse m. Anna Jenkins, brother was Samuel m. Amelia. His grandfather was Samuel m. Amy.

I very carelessly eliminated a whole generation.

Can anyone identify this Benjamin? The inventory says he is 'late of Middle Township' and is dated July 1845. The administrator is one Samuel SPRINGER (which one???). There are quite a few people listed under the "Book Accounts" but the names don't give me any clues, they are your basic Cape May surnames, I think.

Richard asked, "What is the evidence for the presence of Walter and Ruth in Bedford County, Tennessee?"
Barren Co., KY, Deed Book C, p. 206, states that Walter Holmes of Bedford Co., TN, sold to Rachel Harlin a tract of land on Mill Creek in 1811. Second youngest daughter Elizabeth indicated in the 1850 Census, Blount Co., AL, that she was born in Tennessee and that she was 44 at the time the census was taken. The fact that my g-grandfather Isaac Holmes also claimed Tennessee as his birthplace is not relevant to this question. According to the late Rebecca Mask Holmes, granddaughter-in-law of Isaac who prepared the earliest history of this family, Walter and Ruth were traveling through Tennessee when their second son Isaac was born in November 1797.
Richard commented, ". . . this entry in the Union Co., S.C., deed abstracts . . . certainly suggests a connection between this Walter Holmes (who must be a bit older than Ruth Springer, if he is the Walter who married her) and Dennis Springer . . . "
I can find no reliable record of Ruth's date of birth, but we have these clues: (1) She gave birth to eight children between 1789 and about 1808. (2) In both the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Morgan Co., AL, her age is shown to be 60-70, which would place her birth around 1770. (3) In the 1850 census of Blount Co., AL, she was living with daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law James Drake, and her age is shown as 80. Again this would place her birth in 1769 or 1770. Incidentally, she named her first son Dennis Holmes.
Walter is a bit of a puzzle. His age in the 1830 and 1840 censuses was also 60-70, so he would have been born in 1760 or later. Obviously he had died before the 1850 census. What creates the puzzle is the fact that the land he sold, using Dennis Springer as a witness, had been obtained as a grant from the governor of the South Carolina colony in 1774. How old did a person have to be to get a grant of land? Were there two Walters, perhaps father and son? Or, was Walter several years older than the census indicates? I have a copy of the grant, which says not a word about who Walter was or why he received the grant.

Yes, the assumption is that he was at least 21 in 1779. The Dennis, who married Margaret Goforth, has an established age range derived from two censuses, from the ages of his children, and from the fact that his transactions in Union County records begin in 1795. He must have been a generation younger than the Dennis (whoever he was) who witnessed Walter Holmes' deed. The reference to Dennis in
1779 is, as far as I know, the first and last mention of Dennis in that earlier generation.
Richard Sears

Richard, where does the birth date (before 1758) come from for Dennis? Because he would have to be 'of age' to be a witness?? And how do we know which Dennis this is? If this is Dennis who m. Margaret Goforth, it would establish his birth year earlier than the 1768 I often see. If it's an earlier Dennis, who are the possible candidates?

This birth date of before 1758 also puts this Dennis closer in age to Ruth.

I should not be reading about multiple Dennises before I've had my morning coffee.

Ted:

I found this entry in the Union Co., S.C., deed abstracts. It certainly suggests a connection between this Walter Holmes (who must be a bit older than Ruth Springer, if he is the Walter who married her) and Dennis Springer, who disappears from the deed records of the county after this one mention (to be replaced by a younger Dennis later).

DENNIS SPRINGER, b. before 1758.

Union Co. SC Deed Abstracts, Holcomb, Vol. 1, p. 77. Original Deed Book B: 309-10.
3 Feb 1779, Walter Holmes of State of SC to Jno McCooll of same, for £100 sterling, 450 acres granted to Walter Holmes 23 June 1774 in Berkley County in the fork between Broad and Saludy Rivers on the Drafts of fairforest and Browns Creek. Walter Holmes (Seal), Wit: John McKibbin, Andrew Thompson, Dennis Springer. Proved in Union County by the oath of Andrew Thompson 17 Dec 1789 before Thos Brandon, J.P.

I have another question. What is the evidence for the presence of Walter and Ruth in Bedford County, Tennessee? That could prove to be a very important connection for the Union County Springers, given the origin and names of the Springers in Bedford County.

Richard Sears
Richard:
In your information is there any clue as to the relationship between John or Ezekiel Springer and Ruth Springer Holmes? Ruth and her husband Walter Holmes are my g-g-grandparents. Walter and Ezekiel used the same witnesses for land transactions in Union County, SC, in the late 18th century; then appear together in Barren County (now Monroe County), KY. I can't determine who Ruth's parents or siblings were.
According to the church minutes, Walter and Ruth Springer Holmes were members of Mill Creek Baptist Church from June 13, 1801, until September 1806. Other members of the church included William Holmes (joined 1805) and Polly Holmes (joined June 1812). The latter probably was the Polly Springer who was wed to James Holmes by Rev. John Mulkey on Apri1 12, 1808.
Ezekiel Springer and his wife Rebekah joined this church in January 1799. Except for Ezekiel’s dismissal in 1806 and readmission in 1810 after a doctrinal split of the membership, both remained until August 1828, when they moved to Illinois. Rachel Springer joined May 1802. A list of members in 1798-1799, posted on the interior wall of the Old Mulkey Meeting House, includes John Springer, Mary Springer and Polly Springer, listed together, and Betsy Springer, listed separately. The minutes indicate that John Sr. and Mary Springer joined February 1805 and left November 1811. It's possible that this couple had left the church earlier and then rejoined. I didn't notice Dennis Springer on the church rolls, but he and Sally Gotts were married by Rev. John Mulkey on June 27, 1813.
After Walter and Ruth Holmes withdrew from the church in 1806, they moved to Bedford County, TN, and then to Cotaco (now Morgan) County, AL.
-- Ted Holmes

David,

Here is some of what I have about Aaron Springer:

AARON SPRINGER, son of John and Mary (Lawrence) Springer; he was born 1802/3 Union County, South Carolina [1850 census confirms birth date and state; entry for his daughter Martha on 1910 census gives his birthplace as North Carolina]; died in the 1850s in Ripley County, Missouri; married (1) BARBARA JONES, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (______) Jones; land grant on Salt Lick Creek, Smith County, Tennessee, 1829; surveyed for him, as assignee of Nathan Gass, 40 acres on Little Salt Lick Creek by Warrant #463, entered 17 September 1834, recorded 3 February 1835, grant issued 1 March 1835 [chain carriers: Henry York & John Leonard; marker: Aaron Springer] (Grants South of Walker’s Line, Survey # 1377); married (2) ca. 1846? SUSANNA PRICE (b. 1819/20 Tenn.); Thomas Price (b. 1838/9 Tenn.) was living in the Springer household in 1850; Susanna was the mother of Aaron’s Springer’s last two children.

If any of that rings a bell, please let me know how you descend from Aaron.

Richard Sears

In Barren Co., they were members of the Mill Creek (Old Mulkey) Baptist Church, along with several other Springers and other families from Union Co. John L. had a sister Mary, a sister Elizabeth who married a Rush, and a brother named Aaron.
I have a lot of information on some of these people, if anyone is interested.

Richard Sears

I notice several Springer lines posted on ancestry.com Public Trees show Jonathan Springer (born 1790 Georgia, living in Hamilton Co., TN 1850 and 1860) as the son of Josiah Springer born 1774 in Pennsylvania, moved to Kentucky and then Bedford County, TN where he died in 1850 (according to Springers In The South). I descend from Jonathan Springer through his son William Springer (1814-1866) and have been working on this line for many years but have been unable to find any evidence/proof of name of Jonathan's father. Jonathan was born in Georgia and to my knowledge Josiah Springer was never in Georgia. Interested in any sources that point to Josiah being father of Jonathan.

John L. and Nancy Vaughn Springer

I am trying to determine the ancestry of my ggg-grandfather, John L. Springer. He was born about 1807 in Kentucky (probably Barren County). Census records have him in Smith County, Tenn.(1830 and 1840) and then Texas County, Mo (1850)and Shannon County, Mo(1880). According to the death certificate of his daughter Minerva and census records, his wife was Nancy Vaughn, also born in Kentucky. Nancy and John had 4 children, Mary (married David Cole), Louisa Jane (married Simeon Summers), James Patterson (may have died in Civil War), and Minerva (married Daniel Summers). Any information on this couple would be greatly appreciated - I've been stuck here for years!

Nancy

Dennis SPRINGER (m.Ann Prickett) Question

Question for researchers of Dennis SPRINGER b.c1705-1715 and lived in Burlington Co., NJ, m.to Ann Prickett:

I was rereading some pages from the work by the Boles', and on page 375 there is an entry for 10 May 1742 stating that Dennis received payment from the estate of Joseph WOODRUFF Jr. of Elizabeth, Essex Co., NJ. Also listed as receiving payment from the same estate is a Thomas SCUDDER.

There is supposedly a Thomas SCUDDER who either has a PACK mother, or married a PACK, and was in Essex Co., NJ.

Is anyone familiar with this? The source is listed as "30NJA545". Is this what has lead people to think Dennis of Burlington is possibly a son of Dennis of Rahway (m.possibly to Abigail PACK)??? Even though it is fact that Abigail DID marry a SPRINGER, as far as I can tell no one knows the first name of her husband. There was an adult Dennis SPRINGER in that area by c1700, and Abigail was married to a SPRINGER by 1704.

If there is an actual document naming both Dennis Springer of Burlington and Thomas Scudder of Elizabeth, Essex, it might be nice to see a copy of it.
SPRINGERs in lower Silesia 1700s

I found out more about the history of my German SPRINGER family. My grandfather was born in Thuringia but his father Robert Karl SPRINGER was born in a small town in lower Silesia, then part of Germany but which became Poland after WWII. The SPRINGERs there lived near to Breslau and the oldest known ancestors were Gottlob SPRINGER, Johann-Georg SPRINGER and George SPRINGER who was born around 1760. There is also mention of a Christian SPRINGER in the Catholic churchbooks there, who died in the town of Rogau-Rosenau in 1703. SPRINGER was a fairly common name around those parts.

MARY SPRINGER SMITH / SNOW

Looking for any information for Mary Springer, born in Pennsylvania aprox. 1840. She married Robert Smith from Ireland and had one daughter I know of named Minnie Olive Smith born February 2, 1859 in Pennsylvania, died February 11, 1918. Minnie married James C. Snow about 1876 probably Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

Minnie was my grandmothers grandma. Grandma was placed in an orphan home at a young age and never knew her family until she found her father in her early 30's. She was told the infamous (Spring Hoax) story of the Springer riches with ties to the Dupont families in Wilmington, Delaware and always believed her grandmother was an heiress.
Melissa, I have found a site that says David Springer was killed at Normans Kill. I used www.bing.com search engine then did a search for David Springer 1777. You will see Frontiersmen of New York. Inside down near the bottom is reference to David being killed there. Also there is more information at a site for Mineral Springs Ontario.
www.mineralsprings.ca
Hopefully this will help verify just where he was killed.
Dale J.
Melissa, I do believe our family tree shows Dennis as being born 1712. After that the line is truely messed up as my family also record Christopher Springer line as part of ours which it probably is not. Some in my family had contributed to the land hoax of Delaware and I have some of their receipts of their payments. Isn't history fun?
Dale J.
Re: Josiah Springer died Aug 1850, Bedford Co, Tenn.

The Josiah Springer who died about Aug 1850, Bedford Co, Tennessee was born about 1768 in Fayette Co, Penn. the son of Josiah Springer (1737-1785) and Ann Jenkins. Josiah (1768-1850) married Nancy Bell/Beall in Washington Co, Kentucky. They were in Bedford Co, Tenn. by at least 1817. This second Josiah Springer also had a son Josiah - born 8 Aug 1808 in Tennessee, died 14 Sept 1880 in Madison Co, Alabama. The third Josiah Springer Married Rachel E. Burnett. So this line is not related to the Jonathan Springer born in Georgia. These 3 Josiah Springers are descendants of Dennis Springer and Ann Prickett.
