Mary Ann Wilbanks became first wife of Bennett Springfield on 14 Dec 1835, and they had 10 children, one of whom was my great-grandfather, George Washington Springfield. I don't know anything about Mary Ann's parents, where she was born (14 July 1814), and who her siblings might have been. She died 14 Nov 1855 and is biried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Murray Co., GA. Any info you have would be appreciated.

Thomas is called CAPTAIN Springfield. When we look at his time-line we learn some interesting facts:

Thomas born 1766
At age 7 - The Boston Tea Party took place 1773
At age 8 - First Continental; Congress in Philadelphia 1774
At age 9 - Americas war for Independence begins 1775
At age 10 - Declaration of Independence 1776
At age 15 - Cornwallis surrenders at Yorktown 1781.

Thomas Springfield would have been only 15 years old at the time of Cornwall's surrender, so he certainly would not have been old or mature enough to be a CAPTAIN in the Revolutionary War, so we believe "CAPTAIN" was a title of respect given to him in his later years. As a young teen he certainly was involved in the SC Revolutionary effort, but not as Captain.

Carl Springfield 30, Texas 1848; John Springfield, Sr., Philadelphia, PA, 1862; Morris Springfield, Philadelphia, PA, 1852; Thomas Springfield, Philadelphia, 1851; Wm. Springfield, Philadelphia, PA, 1851, Wm. A. Springfield, Philadelphia 1867; and John Springfield, age 25, America, 1841. Since I am pretty sure that these aren't Thomas or Dicey's line and there is a possibility that a Springfield from England came over before the 1870s that MAY be related to my grandfather who DID come over in 1871. I would like to contact someone who is a direct descendent of James Bennett Springfield, 4th child of Bennett Springfield and Mary Ann Wilbanks. I think James' wife Sarah Ann "Sallie" Williams may have been a sister to my ggrandmother Mary Elizabeth Williams who married Bennett's 14th child, Samuel, my ggrandfather. Mary Elizabeth is my brick wall.

I would also like to find out what happened to child #18, Perry Lester Springfield. Perry and Samuel were among the 10 children of Emily Jones, Bennett's second wife. I haven't been able to find out anything about him other than his date of birth, 4 Nov 1870 in Murray Co. GA.

I'm also having difficulty finding Emily and unmarried children (Bennett died in 1877 leaving Emily with 5 or 6 children still at home) and Dicey (Bennett and Mary Ann's 2nd child) and Alfred Henderson in the 1880 census. Has anyone else found them?

For Springfield researchers - the local newspaper in Spring Place was the JIMPLECUTE, a very odd name for a newspaper. I found this interesting item about this paper.

From Eric Shackle’s book “NEWSPAPER’S ECCENTRIC NAMES”

JEFFERSON JIMPLECUTE
The Texas weekly, the Jefferson Jimplecute, was founded as a daily in 1848, when Jefferson was a thriving Red River town. The "Jimp," as the locals call it, sells about 2400 copies. How did it get its name? No one knows. At one stage it displayed, beneath its masthead title, words which formed an acronym: Join Industry, Manufacturing, Planting, Labor, Energy (and) Capital (in) Unity Together Everlasting. However, a local history book says that that phrase first appeared long after the paper was founded.

SPRING PLACE JIMPLECUTE
Strangely, a second newspaper named Jimplecute was published in the small Georgia town of Spring Place (688 miles by road from Jefferson) from 1879 to 1903, but here again no one knows how it was named, or whether it had any connection with its Texan namesake.

George Washington Springfield’s Capture and Escape

George Washington Springfield, son of Bennett, enlisted late summer of 1862 as a private, on the roster of Captain John Oats, Murray Rifles. Murray Rifles later became Co. C, 10th Georgia State Troops, Walker’s Brigade, in the 3rd Confederate Regiment, which joined the Wharton Brigade of the Army of Tennessee, and George became part of Allison’s squadron. He fought at Murfreesboro, TN, and at Fort Donalson.
Allison’s squadron was over-run by Union troops on Monday, 25 Aug 1862, at Rankin’s Ferry, near Jasper, TN, about 75 miles from home (location now under water from the Nickajack Dam, a TVA dam on the Tennessee River, near Chattanooga, TN) and George and his brother William Henry Springfield were taken captive by Federal troops. (William Henry was a Corporal in Co. F, of the 3rd Confederate Cavalry at the time.)
George was taken to several Union prison work camps, and was held for 666 days, until Thursday, 22 June 1864, when he was to be transferred, along with 1700 other prisoners, to the Union prison in Rock Island, Illinois. The transfer was made by train, carried out by the Federal 2nd Corp., under the command of David B. Birney. He never made it to the Rock Island Prison.
As the prison train and Federal 2nd Corp. moved along the Weldon & Petersburg Railroad, just five miles south of Petersburg, it was struck by CSA troops under the command of General A. P. Hill. The CSA forces overwhelmed the Union troops, and set all 1700 prisoners free. George Washington Springfield rejoined the battle in the 4th Regiment of the TN Cav., as a private in Co. C.

Additional note: During the winter of 1863-64, the Confederate Army of Tennessee had it’s winter quarters outside of Dalton, Georgia, near Spring Place.

The DAR suggests that this evidence consist of a death certificate of Elmer Mert Springfield or items such as a will or estate record of William James Springfiled or his wife, or an obituary of Elmer Mert Springfield. Hello - Interesting information! My name is Doug Springfield (41) from Independence, MO. I've always been told my family originated from England and I'm trying to trace this back. Don't know if William Harry Springfield is kin or not, but I thought it couldn't hurt to give you a shout and see if you might know anything that could help me authenticate my blood line.

My father was Daniel Lee Springfield, his father was Daniel Woods Springfield and his father was Myrt Springfield.

I'm trying to find Thomas F. SPRINGFIELD's family. He was the first husband of my great grandmother, Alice Clara MALCOM. He was born in the late 1860's and died January 7, 1890, leaving my gr-grandmother with a 6-month old daughter and no known family.
In my gr-grand's notes, she has a lock of her mother-in-law's hair with a simple note: "My mother-in-law's haire, Mary Ellen Springfield".
Anyone recognize this name or names? He said he was born in Nashville, Tenn. as was my gr-grand.

He was married to my mother Eugenia Helena Brant.

I am looking for any information on Hugh Springfield b.1872 d.1948 married Lula or Lucinda Jane Groves b.1872 d.1961 I have been told that Colonel was Hughs first or Middle name.
Their Chldren were:Clare, Paul, Pink Brown, Henry Polk, Jewel B., died 06-12-1930 16yrs 2months and 3 days Charlie, and Mary, Lillie Mae b.7-22-1899 1yr and 7 mths.
Lollie or Callie M. died --,10-1901 1yr and 9 months Kattie L. or Hattie L. died 4-19-1906 J.P. died 2-22-1914
There is a W>H> Springfield listed in the family bible also but I dont know if this is a parent or a child it says W.H. SPRINGFIELD dydie 11-10-1910 and there is also a MRS. M A SPRINGFIELD 1889(this is barely legable)
W.H. AND MRS. M.A. SPRINGFIELD are listed at the top of the page so we wonder if they are parents.
